@HybridHero three potential answers come to mind regarding the Pokedex entries mentioning "Water and Earth", these are ny explanations from most to least likely: 1. Most likely: Professor Laventon, who wrote these entries, is wrong in this hypothesis. 2. Plausible "changes in Water and Earth" could refer to how You don't (to my knowledge) find the common sneasel in the game outside of Space-Time Distortions. 3. Tinfoil hattery: "Changes in Water amd Earth" might not be related to Sneasel at all, but an easter egg referencing Groudon & Kyogre, perhaps even a future game Hoenn Game in the making. If - I - were to hypothesize, Hero, I would say that you - yes you - the player, are potentially responsible for bringing the common, "modern" Sneasels and Weaviles of Johto day into Hisui, by catching Sneasels and Weaviles from S-T distortions we essentially ensure their prominence in contemporary games, no longer limited to existing in such a zone. Whether or not it is related to the eventual extinction of Hisuian Sneasel - I dare say it's definitely plausible, but the Dark Ice Sneasel and weavile wasn't native to Hisui, but proof's in the pudding, they acclimated better to it's cold, unforgiving climate than their indigenous counterparts, and are here to stay.

here's my take on the water and earth effecting the sneasel line... It's about pollution! The soil quality, which affects the quality of the hearty grains and plump beans hisuian sneasel likes, would change over time as humans spread. The water that Hisuian Sneasel drinks would also change in quality due to humans! since the quality of their foraging based foods would go down, they'd have to hunt more to satisfy their nutrient requirements. In order to more easily hunt, they'd have to join into groups and use darker tactics to hunt their prey. Risking nutrients in the food to poisoned wounds wouldn't be an option either, so they'd forego their poison and let it freeze into ice to hunt! in order to conserve their nutrients, they switched from sneasler to weavile since a smaller body means less need to feed!
@DemonEyeXGamer

And also the poison in their system could be like anti freeze and just develops into ice type and grants that immunity/resistance so instead of just weakening prey it also preserves them.

Yeah makes sense. I mean it’s pretty much confirmed the difference in evolution between the two is the psychological requirements for it to succeed in the Hisui region. The way it fights is influenced by a more brutal and merciless mindset which gives it the dark type. That’s why I think it makes sense for it to have less of a phenotypical change compared to the other two starters. It’s less of a change to anatomy and more so a psychological one that isn’t as obvious.

In terms of evolving over time, sneasel's transition from poison/fighting to dark/ice makes a lot of sense. As a p/f type found in the icelands near where braviary and mamoswine can also be found explains this pretty well. H sneasel has a huge weakness to psychic type attacks, as well as flying and ground. Considering H braviary is a psychic/flying bird of prey, it would make sense that braviary would hunt sneasel in Hisui. In order for Johto sneasel to appear in modern games, the sneasel in Hisui either died out and were replaced by Johto sneasel, or it's a case of convergent evolution, where sneasel slowly became ice/dark over time in order to effectively overcome their greatest weaknesses (dark to combat the psychic weakness and ice to combat flying and ground weaknesses).
@SocialistStrike
@SocialistStrike 2 года назад
I chocked it up to the typing of local Pokemon, primarily Braviary. Braviary is the alpha predator with a dual type advantage. But I don't think it was a defense mechanism, more of a competitive one so Sneasle's lineage could catch prey easier than Braviary, after all, Braviary isn't really found in Sinnoh any more and Sneasel likely didn't prey on Braviary. MAYBE Rufflets though.

I think the most reasonable conclusion as to why this form no longer exists is simply natural selection. Pack hunting works better than solo hunting and they lost the poison typing because they stopped needing it once they could work together to take down large Pokémon like mamoswine or even a group of Pokémon. Theirs an efficient brutality to their pack methods so probably gained the dark type as a result. As for the “Water and Earth” comment. This is an older time period where science was still lacking in certain areas with some dex entries from previous games outright saying how some of Laventons conclusions are misguided or just wrong like How Gastrodon is a filter feeder that eats plankton and Laventon thinking that Gastrodon eats sand which is wrong because it’s getting plankton FROM the sand. So I would personally just write it off as Laventon making an incorrect assumption.

My theory is that the introduction of Johtonian Sneasel and Weavile is what made their Hisuian counterparts go extinct (or at least no longer able to be found in Galar and Sinnoh at the very least), as well as wiping out the Hisuian Braviary, because a Psychic/Flying type would be easy prey for an Ice/Dark-type.

Probably the water and earth is referring to prey that Sneasel hunts moving to a new location. Sneasel and Sneasler’s prey must have moved down the mountain and towards cooler climates. In Weavile’s dex entry, it said that they hunt Mamoswine so probably they ditched the poison type to help better chances and also gain the dark type because in real life, some pack animals (like wild dogs and Hyenas) started eating their prey alive.

@swordman37

OK my theory is that the The poison fighting type was outmatched by the psychic fighting type. I believe that medicham is an invasive species. They are not found in the olden days. So I believe that they caused the change from poison fighting to dark ice as a way to survive better in a colder climate with less competition from the invasive species of medicham.
@justsomebird4285
@justsomebird4285 2 года назад
I think that’s a good factor to it. Perhaps their prey that would justify them being Poison/Fighting at one time also became more scarce due to climate change, habitat loss, predation, etc. and they moved further north, and adopted the new typing, as well as the pack hunting strategy for hunting and protection. It should be noted that despite now being immune to psychic they actually managed to make themselves weak to fighting too so they’d still lose to medicham, which is why I really think Hisuan Braviary wouldve been a big influence too. Maybe even Froslass as Fighting/Poison can’t do much to it.

Here’s my take on the Johtonian/Hisuian Sneasel: my theory is that the Johtonian Sneasel and Weavile were endanger/extinct but with the space-time rifts popping up in the Obsidian Fieldland, they were invasive. This idea came from the fact that Weaviles were seen during the Kalos War, which predates the event of PLA by almost 1,000 year, and in their absents gave rise to the poison/fighting varient, but with the rifts pulling pokemon from both past and future, brought them back and then spread across Hisui and Johto, wiping out H-Sneasels and Sneaslers

@seawolfmoon
@seawolfmoon 2 года назад
TL;DR summary; Sneasel naturally selected to become dark/ice type due to predation and then eating their predator's eggs. I figured that the Hisuian Sneasel gradually shifted to Dark-type start preying on the ghost, flying, and psychic types better in the mountain regions since fighting typing makes it very vulnerable. I mean we have Hisuian Braviary that probably preyed on the Sneasel and given that its typing is x4 weakness for Hisuian Sneasel and Sneasler, it would be a logical conclusion of why Sneasler would die out. Then it would be logical to go further to believe that those that survived long enough to reproduce then would evolve to prey on Pokemon like Zorua first as a transitional prey to the Braviary which is why both of those aren't in Hisui anymore. To support my argument about them targeting Braviary and having hunted the Zorua to extinction I'll be using the previous generation Pokedex entries with supplementary data from my gameplay with a Sneasel in their natural habitats. Since the introduction of Sneasel the Pokedex it has been mentioned that they steal the eggs of bird species specifically Pidgey's line which given how widespread that bird line it makes sense. Pidgeys are an invasive species based on where they end up in the game, so by default what flying (specific bird) types are in Hisui. Starly's line stays towards the coast and lowlands more than higher up and Murkrow stays in the lowlands as well. That leaves only Rufflet which given that they have a typing advantage at this point in time, makes predating them impossible with that typing. So playing with Sneasel in Arceus and trying to avoid dying/being KO'd you learn quickly that your best bet to level up fast and avoid too much damage is to attack Snover's line with the poison moves, or Glalie with fighting types. I would have targeted Hisuian Zorua with Hisuian Sneasel but I found that it doesn't learn foresight and neither does the default Sneasel which is key here. If Hisuian Sneasel had been able to learn foresight, it would have been able to keep the typing and preyed on the ghost types with its fighting typing but since it didn't learn that, it had to adapt by altering its typing. Now continuing back round to the pokedex entries to further examine why Sneasel had to become a dark/ice typing is the entry in generation 7 in Ultra Moon is that Sneasel would target Sandshrews and attempt to prey on them but couldn't make a scratch. This won't make much sense for preying on Sandshrew as ground typing is effective against poison typing unless the Alolan Sandshrew was previously in Hisui as it would have the x4 weakness to the fighting typing. So moving on the assumption that Sandshrew had the Alolan form in Hisui then was predated by Sneasel, Sandshrew's line had to alter its typing through the natural selection style evolution, and as a result, Hisuian Sneasel lost one of their main sources of food. This is where we would see the decline in the populations as Sneasler would have been fine taking down an Alolan Sandshrew's line but with that particular Sandshrew's line having been wiped out in that area or them migrating to the Grand Underground in BDSP game or Wayward Cave in OG D/P that leaves very few prey for Sneasel to hunt. The scarcity of prey that would be a low hassle, the high payoff would have been to alter the typing and abilities to hunt for the Rufflet, Abra, Gligar, Chimecho, Zorua, and other ghost types lingering about. So over time, the fighting typing would have been lost first to build up a resistance to the psychic and ghost typing much like a mongoose, and then the poison typing would have been replaced with ice to build up more resistance to the ground moves.

It is interesting they went with one being more cooperative and smarter while the other is a loner with physical prowess; it has a parallel with our own evolution. Homo neanderthalensis was more like Sneasler; they were larger and stronger but didn’t form large communities and due to that they didn’t exchange technologies or build upon them like Homo sapiens did which is why you still see us around and they’re not. (there are other factors too such as their larger bodies needing more energy to sustain itself and when the large mega fauna of the ice age died out they couldn’t sustain themselves, but I was only drawing the parallel from the Pokédex entry you supplied)

Hmm. I think there may have been an ancient Sneasel that at one point could potentially evolve into both Sneasler and Weavile. This ancient Sneasel eventually developed differently in the areas of Hisui and Johto, gaining different typings that weren't all together mutually exclusive. In Hisui it developed a lone hunter mentality while in Johto it developed a pack hunter mentality. This resulted in the fighting and dark types respectively. Special enzymes in its body also adapted its physiology to better act on its way of life. The lone hunter developed poison to be more efficient, the pack hunter however developed resistance to the cold. Eventually the pack hunters were introduced to Hisui, and competition between the counterparts arose. The lone hunter fell behind the pack hunter and was simply out bred before its variation went extinct in Hisui. At least thats my take on it, evolution (darwin) is a cruel mistress and those best suited to survive will survive. Also it would be cool if one day we get a region that naturally contains the variants of a pokemon in respective areas, like saw Kantonian Vulpix in grasslands for the region and Alolan Vulpix in the snowlands of that region. Or even the return of the Sneasel. Who knows.

I think Hisuian Sneasel is out competed by the croagunk line rather than by any invasive species, and that over time they pushed them further towards the mountains until the croagunk line couldn’t survive the cold. Then Hisuian Sneasel evolves into the Sneasel of today by being forced to live in the mountains and then starts to spread into Johto. This would explain why you can’t evolve Sneasel into weavile in gold and silver cause Sneasel is actually quite new to the region.

That doesn't make any sense. In Sun and Moon, we meet an older version of Grimsley, one of the Unova Elite 4. So how could there be a younger Grimsley in Black and White and then an older version in Sun and Moon? Same goes for Red and Blue. They're older in Sun and Moon. I think this is more based on the time-line. And the Hisuian Pokémon most likely did go extinct. Thanks to Dialga/Palkia destroying the Temple of Sinnoh and the statues of the all Pokémon that were the descendants of the Pokémon that were friends with the legendary hero. This would eventually lead to people forgetting about them over time.

@@RevenantZavier think it this way. There is a basic timeline that connects the events of certain games. Each game is a different world but that does not mean the timeline does not exist. Think of it as multiverse theory. We can apply this to Sun and Moon, they are separate worlds, but with the same basic timeline, only some details being different. In ORAS, as, I said in the original comment, implies this in the delta episode. We know those games are somewhat connected to X and Y because of mega evolution. This can also explain way the fairy type exists so suddenly in 6th gen although it's was never mentioned in any previous game. Since the fairy does not appear in the original gen 4 games it wouldn't be to far a stretch to say this is a different reality where it does. For the sake of simplifying this comment, imagine there is a universe where everything and everyone is the same except you where born with a different hair color. I think Hisuian Sneasel is the original version of the Sneasel line, with Sneasler going extinct over time due to its solitary nature. Since Sneasel can mostly be found in cold climates (coronet/alabaster), over time they'd adapt to those environments and gain the ice typing, and eventually the dark typing from taking on a more cunning nature, eventually evolving into Weavile, which would be the antithesis of Sneasler. What we know as Johtonian Sneasel would actually be the regional variant here (similar to sandshrew/vulpix and others). In Johto, Sneasel can only be found on the northernmost parts of the map, which is also where the Sinjoh ruins are stated to be, meaning they could've easily migrated from Hisui. It's just that in this case, the regional variant (Johtonian form) completely replaced the original variant in its home region (Sinnoh) as well.

I think that if Hisuian Sneasel and Sneasler come into Pokemon Scarlet and Violet they might be pretty good for strategy with poison fighting type and a base 130 atk and 120 speed seems very dangerous. For the design as much as i like the color idk, it just seems a reskin of Johtonian sneasel, and sneasler just seems like a bigger dumb sneasel.

What I like about Sneasler is their bond and design with Ingo in mind. Ingo wears black and twin Emmet wears white. So Ingo bonds with Sneasler out of distant longing for his twin. Now I need to build a team with Weavile (Ingo) and Sneasler (Emmet).

I prefer the look of Hisuian Sneasel better then Johtonian Sneasel. But I like Weavile better then Sneasler, it's literally just a more taller Sneasle, at least Weavile looks a bit more different enough to stand out on it's own. In my opinion.

True Johtonian Sneasel isn't found as as high up, but keep in mind it's in space time distortions so you can't with certainty say _where_ it appears is really anything to go by. It could have warped in from present day Mt Silver. My take on the typing however: survival. First and foremost it's a sitting Psyduck against Hisuian Braviary, so the first thing it needs to do is shake off that double psychic weakness in exchange for an immunity. But without the fighting type it's no longer protected from the cold, so the ice type lets it survive in cold. Not that I have any reason to believe Sneasel is a target for Braviary but when I think Hisui Psychic types in the mountain region that's the first thing that comes to mind

My theory is that Sneasel and Weavile are native to Johto and with the people migrating to Hisui from different regions maybe they brought Weavile and Sneasel along with them and with the space-time distortions maybe some Sneasel may found their way to the highlands and icelands of Hisui, overhunting the native species and starving the Hisuian Sneasel and extincting them or drove them away to other lands far norther making them the dominant species. It is also stated that the earth and the water affect the brain of Sneasel, they are more cunning than the Hisuian counterpart and hunt in packs with Weaviles as their pack leader. Also Weaviles are very smart they can scratch trees to signal and communicate with their companions maybe its something that Sneasler which is a lone hunter and Hisuian Sneasel can't do. And yeah, I know Weavile appeared for the first time in Sinnoh, but since they evolve from a Johtonian Pokémon maybe they can be find in Johto as well. Nothing is stated that Weavile can't be a Johtonian Pokémon, is not because certain Pokémon evolve in different generations that they can't be in their pre-evolution home region. Remember in the remakes of Johto there are Pokémon that we found in Gen 4 dex such as Ambipom, Lickilicky and Mamoswine which evolve from Johtonian Pokémon same thing with Budew, Chingling, Roserade, Dusknoir, Gallade, Froslass and many others being found in Hoenn dex in ORAS. One thing doesn't excludes another, Weavile can be in Johto as well as Sinnoh

It's great to say that the other hisuian forms make sense because they aren't in modern day sinnoh... But why? How? Something must've happened to them that means they aren't there anymore. You can't just explain that they died off because hisuian zorua and zoruark are seen in gen 9. How did they die out etc... Did they migrate perhaps, that's what I was hoping to figure out from a game set in the past
@justsomebird4285
@justsomebird4285 2 года назад
I feel like not all of them had to have died out. They may be in areas inaccessible in BDSP or DPPT and also some of them just haven’t been introduced. Zorua, much less Hisuan Zorua, didn’t even exist back in Gen 4. I definitely think Zorua and Zoroark could still be around especially with the illusion abilities. We only saw one wild Unovan Zoroark in Black and White anyway. And Hisuan Sneasel could just be endangered and living in the mountains. I also don’t see how Hisuan Basculin could feasibly go extinct when they can basically live in any body of water in Hisui/Sinnoh, including fresh water lakes, rivers and streams, as well as the ocean.

@justsomebird4285
@justsomebird4285 2 года назад
I’d imagine they both competed for the same niche and since Johtonian Sneasel and Weavile lived in packs and naturally fit into the ecosystem in the Alabaster Icelands, they were more successful hunters and also could manage to avoid fighting Hisuan Sneasel/Sneasler who have the type advantage, kind of like with Homo Sapien and the Neanderthals. Since they were better hunters they got access to food more so they just outcompeted the Hisuan variants. I only see the Hisuan Variants outcompeting them in the Coronet Highlands. Would be cool if the original Sneasel became an endangered species due to invasive species and predation that exist in the mountains and are seldom seen.

The color palette helps too.) and I really like Sneasler because it feels like they built on the design aspects that made Sneasel Sneasel (hence the name lol). @PansyPops 2 года назад
Sneasler isn’t necessarily a wannabe Weavile, it could possibly outshine under very specific circumstances. It has a completely different type, has a lot more resistances (so may not die as easily, despite low bulk) and has stats. It’s slightly slower than Weavile, by a fraction, but has 10 higher Atk so will pick up KOs easier. Given a Choice Scarf, it could very easily become a dangerous sweeper- especially with STAB Close Combat, STAB Poison Jab, STAB Drain Punch, X-Scissor coverage, and signature move Dire Punch for a sneaky paralysis/poison/drowsiness.

Hey, I know I'm a bit late but I just learned about the existence of Hisuian Sneasel and came to check it out. Could the water and earth thing have something to do with Lake Acuity? As far as I know all sneasels in Sinnoh live near Lake Acuity, which is the home place of Uxie, the "Bringer of Knowlegde". Maybe the proximity to Uxie and its home made Sneasel smarter, resulting in the pack hunting thing?

I was thinking that Sneasler are a parental unit, while one of the parents hunts, the other watches their young, but because of Hisuian Braviary. Sometimes the parent hunting don't comes back, and the other parent had to hunt, and it happens to the other parent too. The Hisuians Sneasels who lost their parents ends up joining others Sneasels who also lost their parents and had to adapt to hunting nocturnal because of Hisuian Braviary preying on them. They slowly over time ended changing and becoming more sneaky, spiteful and vicious, they ended attacking braviary's nest to feed and became adapted to night hunting, losing their type to more adapted to survive at night. These Sneasels ended gaining a new evolution as Weavile which is holding Razor Claw at night. Thanks to their new evolution, their offspring also gained their parents's type. Thanks to that, they overhunted Braviary and its pre evolutions off Hisui, no one knows if Sneaslers still exist on Mount Coronet surviving in places impossible to humans to enter without Sneasler's help. (Geez, I didn't expected to write this much on a phone XD)

I don't know about Sneasel/Weavile/Sneaslers' connection to it, but the dex entry for Hisuian Sliggoo says that the reason for its new form has to do with the high iron content in the water affecting the slime it produces, so maybe it's HISUIAN Sneasel being affected by its environment and not Johtonian Sneasel, and the reason they mention it in Johtonian Sneasels' entry is because the people of Hisui are used to seeing the Hisuian counterpart.

I like them. And their looks fits. Sneasel and Weavile are dark type and active at night. Weavile became damn smart and far more dangerous than Sneasel. Sneasel that can evolve into Sneasler gave up their dark powers and became combat experts and also are living alone. Also they are now active at the day and live in the high mountains. The typing? Sneasel is sadistic and cruel. As Weavile it became brutal. As Sneasler it became even more sadistic by poisonous claws.
