Hey Zach, Cat5 here. I raced this as my first crit and definitely had trouble at the bottom of the hill. How much of cornering speed is due to guts/skill vs. equipment? For example on a course like this with a high speed tight turn, how much difference does it make to run a wider tire (say a 25mm Conti GP) vs a narrower one (say a 23mm Gatorskin)? Thanks for the content!
Yo! Definitely a combo of everything you listed. Personally I prefer running racier tires like GP5000s or an equivalent. I run 28mm and low pressure - 60psi front and 70 psi rear at 69kg. That gives you way more grip than something like a stiff 23mm Gatorskin. When you get that extra grip, you can start to gain more confidence in the corners as well. It comes with practice and experience for sure. "Velominati Rule #64: Cornering confidence increases with time and experience. This pattern continues until it falls sharply and suddenly."
@@wackery_zeimer I realized I posted this on the wrong video (I guess it autoplayed..supposed to be on the Berkeley Crit)..but your answer is super helpful. Thanks!
Good job on the result despite being on the rivet for most of the race! Do you think fatigue (or something else) played a role in this race or just the nature of hitting the climb hard every lap? You guys were crushing up that hill! There was one time up the hill in the full race video that it looked like you completely hit a wall, so good job bouncing back and suffering through!
Ha I actually unclipped accidentally I was pedaling so hard! Good reminder to replace stuff when it's worn! Got a pair of new cleats on my shoes now 👍 The hill was definitely the main feature for sure. You either had the fitness to get up or not! I think there could've been some advantage to sag climbing it, starting up front and letting people pass each time if you could move back up before the hill started again each lap.
@@wackery_zeimer I first thought you dropped a chain then you kept going so it wasn't that, but unclipping makes sense lol. I'm anal about making sure my gear is right before an important race or ride. Making sure my cleat screws are tight even... 😑😑
