HMCS Sackville Walkaround 

Fantastic video thanks. My dad served as a able seaman on a flower class covette HMS Narcissus and was along side HMCS sackville on convoy ONS 18. 24th September 1943, when HMS Ichin (destroyer) exploded, was sunk by u boat with the new (type) acoustic torpedo. There was only 1 survivor. Details of this attack can be foung in Echo of a fighting Flower (Peter Coy).. Anyone intersted in Flower class corvettes would find it of some interest I'm sure. It's sad there only one of this type left now so I'm glad its been restored. Thanks again.

Very interesting video. HMCS Sackville is, I believe, the last surviving Flower Class Corvette. For a really good film of these little ships in action, check out 'The Cruel Sea' (1953) based on a novel written by a Royal Navy officer who served on Atlantic Convoys in WWII.

I really enjoyed visiting Sackville. She is really tiny, feels like a big-ish fishing boat. Lot of fun traversing that 4 inch gun, was surprised too that it still turned. We took aim at a large tour group past that wave sculpture lol. "By Jove we've got them now! Give 'em a taste of HE!"

Reminds me of a video I was watching that admitted most middle class Americans can't afford to leave their state.. Man I'd love to visit the coasts and see all these museum ships but it's just a fantasy. So it's awesome at least, getting a tour from a history fan. Thanks man.

In the 1953 film The Cruel Sea, based on the book by Nicholas Monsarrat, HMS Compass Rose was a Flower class corvette. An Excellent film, and book, which gives a good feel for what it was like to be on convoy escort duty.

Thanks for this upload! I’ve been a Flower class fan since reading The Cruel Sea decades ago. There are quite a few RU-vid vids about them. But few bother to mention the open bridge, or try to get just how rough it could be in the North Atlantic in winter, with no shelter for the watch crew. This was routine for those hardy guys. Later on in WW2 these ships got refitted with a proper pilot house, and radar, and asdic. Which is good. The Flower class were wet ships. In bad weather at sea, sailors never really got a chance to dry out between watches, so they were always damp and cold. Yeesh.

i read a lot of books written by Douglas Reeman who served in the Royal Navy during World War II and when he talks about ships being "wet," he wasn't kidding. Especially with exposed bridges. Those were real sailors back then.

I love your museum ships videos so no complaint from me regarding WoWs content. I always wanted to see a Flower class corvette up close, unfortunately I live in Romania and I can't travel much these days, so I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

My father, Robert William Chappell, served on a RCN Flower Class Corvette during the Second World War. He was 19 when he shipped aboard. I have a couple of framed photos of him in uniform. So bloody young. He passed away back in 1993 at age 69......too young. I myself am 63 now. I toured the Sackville a couple of years ago. After telling my Dad’s story to a crew member, I was invited to go into the engine room which was where my father was stationed. It is an eerie feeling to be standing in the same place (different ship) that my Dad stood all those years back. Even in harbour, the steel walls, boiler tank, stairways and ladders are cold and damp, with the ocean right outside a fairly thin metal shell. Similar feeling to a Halifax bomber like the one my uncle was in, and then out of when it blew up over Germany. He survived, but that is another story.

iChase - While in Halifax - she's not a warship - But the Bluenose II - you can book tickets to go out for an hour or so - they raise sails also - a good tour of the harbor - Beautiful ship with a long history in the line... My Dad Alex Esgate was Signalman onboard HMS Pink during WW2.. His position was behind the pompom on the signalling light.. (Phil)

I really enjoyed this video! I’m Canadian so I like seeing the RCN ships, even though there is not to many left and they are small. Also for Italian cruisers I want to see Zara.

My Dad served on HMS Rosebay, a Flower Class Corvette, from April 1944 until July 1945. He was in charge of all anti-aircraft guns, as a Leading Seaman. It was really fascinating to see how they all lived on this tiny ship, especially as they had a crew compliment of 70.

Rough to be on, wet, these little uns might have been but I gather that they had had an impeccable record for NOT pitching their crews into the sea. Bless Canada for its magnificent effort in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Oh snap, this is brilliant! I bought my first 'Anatomy of the Ship' book after watching your video on the Flower Class Corvettes (just recently took delivery of my fifth book, Bismarck). These ships have a special place in my heart though...slow, underpowered, lightly-armed and armoured, terrible in terms of seaworthiness, sailors guaranteed to be soaked below decks, yet exactly what were needed at the time. They punched way above their weight. Though the Flowers were obsolete by the end of the war (probably during the war too) the Irish Naval service used them up until 1969, so that 4-pdr was probably nice and fresh. Yeah, really cool ships. Thanks iChase, good job.

HMCS SACKVILLE is my favorite ship and this is the reason why is my grandfather served on her during war CHIEF PETTY OFFICER Frank Pickell and I know the stories first hand of these brave crews and there vessel that made difference in BATTLE NORTH OF ATLANTIC and my grandfather was ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY VOLUNTEER RESERVE OR RCNVR. That story of HMCS SACKVILLE limping back to Canada on one broiler and Royal navy thought a German torPEDO had hit the ship. These vessels could roll and bring in water and ice build up was also dangerous crew and vessel and open pit early in the BATTLE NORTH OF ALTANTIC and there is also a book of remembrance as well on the HMCS SACKVILLE K181. The refit to her wartime mission was done by former PM Brian Mulroney for CANADAS naval aniversay of ROYAL CANADIAN NAVY 75TH ANIVERSAY and that year was also Canada military tattoo that started in CFB HALIFAX AND WENT TO VICTORIA BC and our naval gun teams that year as well in 1985 broke the world record in the gun in Toronto Ontario and a few seconds faster than the current gun run title. I m amateur military historian and i specialized in CANADIAN MILITARY HISTORY.

The Flower-class Corvettes were known as the "Pekinese of the Ocean" because they were said to be able to "Roll on wet grass" due to their 80° rolls, 40 each way of upright. As of now, Sackville is the Only surviving Ship of the Class, like Haida for the Tribal's or USS Laffey (DD-724) for the Allen M. Sumner-class Destroyers.

Very interesting. Thanks for a good tour of the HCMS "Sackville". And no you are right, the "Flower"-class corvettes were not big. Rather small. 925 tons and it was home to 90 men, for months. Some times in arctic, freezing condition. HCMS "Sackville" (K181) is the ONLY preserved "Flower" corvette out of the 314 corvettes built from 1940-1944. A LOT of ships in a few years. The "Flower"-class was actually based on a whaler-hull. 33 corvettes were sunk in action.

I am always amazed at how rough and uneven the metalwork is on these old ships. And it may be an illusion, but the smaller the ship the rougher it seems to be. Not only dings and dents but just really rough crude welding. These were constructed in great haste and show it.

Good tour. Talk about your hardy sailors... these guys deserve any praise you can possibly throw at them. My dad also served on a small ship, a minesweeper, but that was in the Med.,a far more comfortable prospect altogether.

I heard that the HMCS Dicky, a fictional Corvette, which is shown with the USS Keeling (actually the USS Kidd, a Fletcher class destroyer) fighting a Wolfpack Sub in the movie Greyhound was the Sackville with a name change.

These ships were apparently a nightmare to serve on - rolled a lot in any kind of sea and sea sickness was a real issue. Thanks for this.

I'm hoping that when they do add submarines to WoWS, they also add DE's, Frigates, Corvettes, and Sub-Chasers to counter them.

Cool video. It's sad to see our oldest ship that's now a museum peace is better armed then our latest warships. The Harry Dewolf class, though crew accommodation are much better aboard the new ships compared to the Flower class.

Really nice ship and well put together museum! I think Sackville is kinda special as one of the few surviving Commonwealth warships from WW2 which was not heavily modified with ugly Cold war modifications, and probably the only surviving warships in the wold to posses the famous 2pndr pom pom, although not in the crazy 8 gun mount ha.

As a side note, CSS Acadia was HMCS Acadia during WWI and WWII. It is the only surviving Canadian ship that served in both world wars.

Interesting video and you did share a bit new information. Though you completly missed the Wheelhouse, Radio Room and Asdic Hut. I hope that one day I could visit this ship as it may never come to World of Warship, but is coming to Wolfpack.

Sackville is a Corvette and Haida is a destroyer leader. the two vessels couldn't be more different. Haida and the rest of her sisters were actually based on a design of a scout cruiser, infact the only difference between Haida and her "Cousins" the Dido and Sirus is the main gun calibre. if Sackville was in a squadron with Haida Sackville would be escorting destroyers (like HMCS Ottowa H60) that themselves would be escorting Haida. also the Submarine that you mention that got hit in the conning tower is a special one: U-552 "The Red Devil" one of the more successful of her class, and at the time of the encounter she was under the command of Erich Topp who would later become Germany's 3rd highest scoring U-boat captain, U-552 would survive till the end of the war when she would be scuttled, and Topp would later go on to be an important and high ranking officer in the West German Navy. Acadia is actually a warship with far more experience behind her than Sackville has, Acadia was first commandeered by the royal navy for service in WW1! Acadia witnessed the Halifax explosion than was decommissioned after the war ended but was put back into service for WW2.

Across the harbour is Dartmouth. There is a Coast Guard base there. The Naval Dockyard is farther north on the same side ofthe harbour as Sackville. Take the harbour ferry for a view of that. Cheers.

I didn't know you were Canadian, Chase! Thats awesome. Halifax is a great little city. Lots of hipsters - but also tons of great food, history, and culture. If you have the time make a trip to New Glasgow and go to Sams or Acropole. Try some Pictou County Pizza. Its unique and famous! Take care duder!

These ships used to be whaling ships before the war and then converted from the necessity of ww2.

The open bridge was a "thing" of the RN even BBs had open bridges.

As you stated in the video, their intended role was anti-submarine and/or anti aircraft and these small corvettes don't get the credit they deserve for their convoy protection work. Thanks

what is that missile launch rack kind of thing attached to the both sides of the turret shield? i feel like these open turret would be very outdated in ww2 but again the flower class was mostly used against subs so the deck gun would be good

You walked right by the hedgehog and didn't even mention it.. The hedgehog is just before the end when you climbed up on the gun. 22:36 They fired them all at once over the bow and dropped to the bottom and if they hit a sub they went boom no matter the depth
