In this video, we look at the hospital ships of the First World War through the lens of HMHS Britannic, sister ship to RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic of the White Star Line.
The hospital ships of WW1 were primarily civilian ocean liners requisitioned for the war effort and were afforded certain protections under international law. However, hospital ships were not always safe and many of them, including HMHS Britannic, were damaged or sunk by enemy torpedoes, mines, and fire.

It's strange that the HMHS Britannic was almost exactly the same size as the USN's present day Comfort and Mercy, but was actually significantly _faster_ than those ships despite being about 100 years older.
@owenshebbeare2999

I suppose it is mainly because Britannic was intended as a fast trans-Atlantic vessel whereas modern hospital ships are purpose built, ans speed is not critical.

Very informative video. 17:53 Do you know Arthur John Priest? He was a stoker who survived the Olympic and Hawke collision, the sinking of Titanic, Britannic, SS Donegal, HMS Alcantara and the RMS Asturias collision during her maiden voyage. Two other survivors of Titanic, Archie Jewell and Jessop, would survive the sinking of the Britannic with Priest but Jewell died during the sinking of Donegal. After the sinking of Donegal, he retired. Anyways, very well made video and keep up the great work.
@TheGreatBigMove
@TheGreatBigMove 2 года назад
I know of John Priest, yes. I think the primary reason Jessop is so commonly discussed is that she wrote an autobiography/memoir which gives a lot of insight into her life. I'm not aware of any substantial sources of information about Priest.

From my knowledge on Britannic I know that her sinking was photographed and the photos were archived in a museum, however the photos of her demise were destroyed when the place they were stored in was destroyed in a fire from a blitzkrieg. There is only a few photos that survived but sadly all but one are gatekept by some private collectors and the only public photo is right after the final plunge and all you can see in the photo is the Ile of Kea in the background with just the ocean bubbling with dust clouds over the site of the sinking. also, personal opinion: Britannic would have been decent for the white star but in no means as profitable as the Aquitania, plus the increased width of her hull made her pretty slow for a vessel of her size. EDIT: Do take this with a grain of salt, this is just info from what I have heard over the years so don't get your hopes up.
@TheGreatBigMove

Very interesting, I did not know that there were any photographs taken of Britannic's sinking. I would love to see one in the future.
@Kaidhicksii

@@TheGreatBigMove From what I last heard, the photos that this man alleges were taken of Britannic, specifically after she went to the bottom, aren't actually of Britannic, but of another ship. Of course, I myself have no way of actually verifying this at the moment. I have little doubt there were photos taken of the sinking - matter of fact I'd be a bit surprised if there weren't - but take these claims with a grain of salt is what I'm saying.
@TheGreatBigMove
@TheGreatBigMove 2 года назад
@@Kaidhicksii I wouldn't at all be surprised if no photos were taken of the sinking. In my experience, it isn't particularly common for there to be photos of sinking ships in the first couple of decades of the 20th century.

if watertight doors were previous closed and portholes ordered close, britannic likely would have saved the ship from foundering. i guess the only upside is she would ahve eventually been scrapped with olympic, so instead we have a well presevered massive olympic class ship stil wiht us....although 400 feet in water XD

Two words to describe Britannic WASTED POTENTIAL.She was meant to be an ocean liner she deserved to be an ocean and it’s sad she met a similar fate to her older sister the Titanic in terms of the fact they both sank. The Britannic could’ve been so much more and the fact White Star Line had the audacity to name a third ship Britannic is sad because they basically decided to forget about the Olympic class liner that could’ve been.

Britannic was pretty but Titanic was the most picturesque. The massive davits were hideous and the superstructure near the back poop deck didn't look clean. It would be great to see the proposed interiors realized but the exterior looked clumpy and not very streamlined.
