In this video, we look at the hospital ships of the First World War through the lens of HMHS Britannic, sister ship to RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic of the White Star Line.
The hospital ships of WW1 were primarily civilian ocean liners requisitioned for the war effort and were afforded certain protections under international law. However, hospital ships were not always safe and many of them, including HMHS Britannic, were damaged or sunk by enemy torpedoes, mines, and fire.
