As a swede I really do look up to HMKG. We have the Swedish Army, but you truly are one of the best marching bands in the world even seen from a swede's perspective :) Love to you from your neighbour Sweden.
This is the BEST military band and drill team. I have never seen anything like this in the USA. Thank you Norway. Texas A&M band is a very close second.
This was one of the best tattoos...if not the best tattoo (2024) of the HMKG. I have it recorded in mp4 and every now and then I enjoy the coordination of the team. Greetings from South America and congratulations for having been a member of the HMKG.
Had the privilege of taking part (in a military band) in the |Colchester Searchlight Tattoo in 1996 with this band and drill team If i am not mistaken they are all conscripts who serve 1 year of national service, they are truly amazing, very professional and their discipline both on the arena and off is unbelievable.
@@baldrbraa sorry it was actually 1990 not 1996. I took part in the Royal Tournament in 1996. You are right the heat was horrendous at Colchester. Shame its gone like so many more brilliant events.
I grow up in Oslo from 1992 To 1997. My father was officer Vegard Løge in the castle guard. HMKG was the my favorite from i was 1 year and watched Edinburgh Tattoo on tv. I soon begun to play drums everyvere, and in 1994 i olmost could play the drum starting GAMMEL JEGERMARSH when i was two years old😅
dont know how many times i have watched and listened to this, but, it seems to get better every time. an amazing display of drill and musicianship. god bless the HMKG.
This kids really rocks...what an incredible perfomance, perfection is not a question in the minds of these young kids. A flawless perfomance of discipline and inmense way of focus in this drill. Its just amazing to see a bunch of kids doing these kind of shows.
Do notice that there isn't one drill word? These gentlemen certainly deserve the title of the Kings military/drill team! They are so wonderful...congrats men.
I'm a high school drum major, i showed this to some drum corps-nuts in my band, they were blown away by this. Would love to see these guys in person sometime.
have watched this time and time again. what a display of musicianship and drill. i am ex british army and appreciate greatness. these guys are the best.
I heard this first when my band teacher showed us this 13 years ago I was 12.. I'm 25 now and still play trumpet and i still watch this video so often ... to me this performance went down in history.
@Superhaze Wrong. The uniform of HMKG has almost remained unchanged throughout it's history. The uniforms were designed in 1856 with inspiration from Prussia. The bowler hats are taken from the italian Bersaglieri.
Rifles of US Garand M-1. We used them in Drill Competitions also. For "fancy work", such as spinning, Queen Anne Salute, etc., we used the Springfield M1903.
GoldenCode The M-1 weighs 9 pounds. Let's see most people spin a 9 pound "baton" with a bayonet, much less toss and catch it. I'd look like Swiss cheese after one practice session.🤤
I had almost forgotten about this video. I first saw it years ago, sometime around 2011. The precision of the drill team is magnificent, as is the band. And as someone who has played drums since 1959, it's a pleasure to the "sound of drums", and not someone clickity clacking away on plexiglass.
This is so VERY impressive!!! I have watched this several times over the years (dont know how old the video is) and i Never get tired of it. The music is awesome! The Precision is off the Chart! If this doesn't gve you Goose bumps and bring a smile to your face, then you are Dead.
I am Norwegian myself, and I`m am sincerely proud when HMKG have their international shows. The most amazing thing thoug, is that king`s guards are switched out every year. The drilltroop you see here have just 10 months of training and still are the best in the world :)
Looks like the rifles are US Garand M-1's. Great for drill - we used them in drill platoon competitions. But for fancy/precision drill, the 1903 Springfiled was tops!
Everything about this was GLORIOUS AND MAGNIFICENT!!! From the marchers with the rifles, the marching band, the drummer guy, the percussion dude, and that glorious trumpet sound.
1: Gibraltar, Richar Waterer 2: Moment for Morricone, Jacob De haan 3: Trommestunt 4: Moment for Morricone, Jacob De Haan 5: Gammel Jegermarch, Tradd./ Old Rangers march
These Norwegian conscript soldiers put on a world class performance of military tattoo. This show how true love for your country can motivate young men and women to outshine professional "salary soldiers" like the US marine corps. As a Norwegian citizen i am very proud of HMKG.
not so much words can describe my feelings... Touching the Miracle -- will be most precise with love and LOT of respect from your most northern neighbor And, as you understand for me Farvel Til En Slavisk Kvinne is the best march It's hard to believe but in my opinion HMKG performs it better than our band!
absolutely marvelous! the music and drill is unbelieveable. as an ex- british army soldier (and bandsman) i am in awe of these absolutely brilliant soldiers. i especially liked the way they broke from morricone into what i think is their regimental march (can anyone enlighten me on this) i will certainly view this again, and again, and again, dont think i need to keep going on this.
You're absolutely right, Sir! That is the HMKG's regimental march and it's called "Gammel Jegermasj" (The old Hunter's March), written on notes in 1799 although it is believed that the march has even older traditions.
The northern norwegians had the german troops on a run when they came to Narvik, this is when they got the message to lay down arms because the government had gotten to safety. Read about: "General Fleichers company"
I have no idea how I wound up here, but I am totally impressed. This is amazing! That drum line was so clean and in sync. Bravo! "When Johnny comes marching home again Hurrah! Hurrah! We'll give him a hearty welcome then Hurrah! Hurrah! The men will cheer and the boys will shout, the ladies they will all turn out And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home."
***** ~ So true, and the reverse are the terms 'you suck' or 'that blows', etc. Whenever I asked my grandkids to use the word 'stinks' instead, they would roll their eyes. After I explained to them that both terms were derived from sexual connotations, I never heard them use those words again. PS - I never learned to speak a second language, so I am very envious of anyone who does. Besides, your English is actually very good.
extraordinaire ,du grand art , la perfection , j aimerai savoir le nombre heure de répétition pour arriver a ce niveau de réussite si quelqu un peut me rensèigner ça serais bien merci
TheDrummie1 I played flute in the Norwegian band that year. It was the middle of a heatwave, like over 40 C in the daytime. It was a very difficult ground to do the drill in, because it was after dark, there were no straight lines, and the searchlights were all over the field. Somehow we managed :)
Written in the video, but i'll repeat it for you : 1. Gibraltar 2. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly .3. When Johnny Comes Marching Home 4. Same as Nr.2 . 5 Old Ranger Song ( Gammel Jegermarsj)
I am so pleased to see this excellent performance because my alma mater, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, has very strong ties to Norway, being sponsored in part by the Norwegian American Lutheran Church. In the many years when the Luther concert band and Nordic choir were conducted by the legendary Weston Noble (Google him, you'll see), the band and choir both performed before the Norwegian royalty. Weston was presented with a ceremonial sword by King Olaf which Weston displayed in his office thereafter. Crown Prince Harald also came to Luther to be honored in a very elaborate ceremony featuring the entire Luther faculty in their robes plus many civic and state officials. I was in the band which played the "Strategic Air Command March" for the processional on that occasion . Weston, being the dramatic showman he was, timed the piece so that the last note of the march sounded just as everyone on the platform sat down, just exactly as their rumps hit the chairs! In his remarks, Crown Prince Harald went out of his way to acknowledge Weston and to praise him, the band, and the choir at length. It was quite an occasion; I remember it well, even after 50 years!!
I really loved seeing the whole thing, . . . gives us all hope when we see young people dedicated enough to work this hard. I have to admit though, at one point in the music, . . . I half expected to see Clint Eastwood ride in and start one of his spaghetti western movies.
i am a norwegian and i am so proud everytime i see this, it brings a tear to my eyes every time i see this :) Hans Majestet Kongens Garde er de beste i verden i dette. stolt over å vere norsk
RoarTheMighty Eh, the military lead the most successful missions in all of human history. And caused the first losses ever for Nazi germany. If you mean initially, the Norwegians didnt fight back, just like almost no one did, as no one knew the nazis were what they were, get a clue please.
We have Shcool marching bands. But very few of them concentrate on drill. I was fortunate to be in one that focused alot on drill and marching. Alot of my fellow band members served in the Kings guard 3rd company.
Excellent! Congratulations, top notch execution, not forgetting the uniforms and the music. Those are late model Krag-Jorgensen rifles, aren't it? Beautiful. Greetings from Portugal, and wishes of a Happy New Year!
It took me a couple years to discover this, but the Suite "Moment for Morricone" at 4:00-6:00 and 6:50 towards the end, they play two songs tributing to the great Ennio Morricone! Most obvious is the theme to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. But the other song is L'estasi Dell'oro. I love this video and the tattoo even more now
HMKG's unsurpassed standards can largely be attributed to the cultural and institutional support they enjoy among their countrymen. The members represent national pride and tradition, which inspires an extraordinary effort and commitment to maintain, continue and often exceed the standard set by their predecessors.
I have played with Garden :P My local school band had a concert with Garden in 2000 or 2001, and it was awsome!!! One of my friends have ben in Garden, she played the Clarinette :O) *and Gammel Jegermarsj, that they played at the end, is always a big hit with the public*
Nice! That piece of music is called "Gibraltar" march. It was written by and for the The Royal Marines in the UK. The name of the composer eludes me at the moment, but it is an excellent march. They only actually played the first half. The second half sounds a bit like star wars.
Not to mention that most of these "kids" are conscripts who learn to do this in one year. As Norway don't have an army consisting of "career" soldiers. Most of our soldiers only do one year of conscripted service, anything after that is by choice.
