We keep our orange wired F-35B's in the USA. I suspect this trip is for trials and further development work. You don't want a cluttered deck for that.

When HMS Queen Elizabeth conducted F-35B trials off of the east coast back in 2018 all the aircraft belonged to the Marine Corps augmented to VX-23 at PAX River.

In the UK, as they weren't required for these trials. The jets used were from the joint UK/US Integrated Test Force at NAS Pax River, which embarked upon the carrier's arrival

It never broke down as such, just an unfortunate accident that damaged both shafts

Why oh why do you idiots keep peddling this tripe about F-35s and show your general ignorance? If you had read a bit more than writing you would know this ship is in the USA to trial the Bedford Array landing system that will aid SRVL retrievals. Yet another carrier development from the UK just like every other one was. It has no need for other F-35s as the ones testing are 'orange' Wired' for these tests. As for general F-35 deliveries go shout at the US Government not the UK Government. We paid for / allocated funds to LM for 48 aircraft over 8 years ago. They have delivered 30. The UK Government has already paced the funds with the RAF to buy a further 34 aircraft. This is a delivery not a funding issue. As for the RN during WWII please explain the 'inadequate equipment' when until late 1943 it was the largest navy in the world and defeated everything the Nazis put to sea while doing its bit in the Pacific. Who showed the Yanks that steel flight decks were the way to go? Yes this 'inadequate' Royal Navy.

The specific issue of the lack of F-35s isn’t due to budget cuts, it’s due to Lockheed Martin failing to assemble & deliver them in good time (even though BAE Systems are sending them all the British made parts at the correct rate; something they should refuse to do until more aircraft are delivered to the RN & RAF).

I'd rather we wait and get the latest tranche, where they have figured out some of the start up bugs. The early tranche aircraft are going to cost a fortune to put right. Let them iron out the kinks before we buy a whole heap on them.

@@RajBlake7 that is a logical argument but sadly we need numbers now to a) keep up training schedules and b) to keep the two flight decks up to pace. 30 isn't enough. We have the funds for the next tranche but why order when the first tranche are not delivered? As it happens all F-35s are being built with "Technology Refresh 3" hardware capable of running the latest software when proven to enable 'Block IV' aircraft although while the USAF are not accepting them until software is proven the RAF will do as we have software autonomy and simply need aircraft.

No UK jets were embarked because none were needed for the sea or air trials. The jets they used were from the Integrated Test Force. ITF jets have loads of test sensors that aren't found on normal production F-35s

That's one of the items on the agenda.

@@logtothebase2no, they want to use the instrumented test airframes to look at parameters such as airframe stress levels during SRVL and when landing using the new full-length Bedford Array Apparently these instrumented flight-test airframes will never leave the US - so if you want to use them to test airframe stress levels when landing on your new carrier (or with new landing techniques, as here) you have to take the carrier to the US

There is a story behind it, and it is simply once again Britian has found that a larger area for control of the ship and aircraft means better wind control on the deck. So firstly before the geniuses arrive and say the second one is for the funnel, yes it is. However this was planned because the much smaller aircraft carrier class known as the Invincible class had almost the complete starboard (right looking stern to bows) side of the deck covered by the control sections of the ship. This in turn lead to better cross deck wind control when launching aircraft, and it meant the Harrier on the Invicible class could from a much smaller ship be launched when it couldn't from a conventional one island carrier, no matter what size it was. This was noticed of course and the British military incorporated this into the two island design for the QE carriers. The cross wind on the QE class is much lower than on the Nimitz of Ford because of the second tower/funnel design. Thus the QE can launch F35b aircraft when the Ford or Nimitz cannot launch theirs. The limits on the QE deck are higher than on the corresponding American carriers as was the same for the Invincible class and the previous Argus class HMS Ark Royal, which would NOT have been able to launch Phantoms for most of the time in the Falklands war!

"Air Arms" do not belong to the carrier. They go to carriers as and when they are needed.
