This week, one hoarder has to face up to her spending habit, while the other comes face-to-face with an emotional past, but, will it all be worth it in the end?
Self-storage is big business and can help us create space in our over-crowded home. But, some have taken their storage hoarding too far, clinging on to things they never see or use, and it’s costing them a fortune

Yes, in fact the fees received are so so low unless it is silver that you are better off giving it to charity and working an extra hour or two as yo uwould make more money! I gave all my jewllery , stamps and coins to charity for example as nothing was worth over about £10 an item so cheaper in terms of time to give it away all all once than try to sell on Ebay.

Absolutely!! Even if there was only 500 items in there (which depending on the size of the individual items, could easily fit in 10 or less boxes, realistically), that's still unpacking and making decisions on 3 items every MINUTE! So, to expect someone with a true hoarding illness to do it in 3 hours when there's potentially thousands of items?? So unfair to set them up for failure like that. Not happening. Thankfully, it's "reality tv" so we can be sure there was actually a team of helpers, and more time.

Clearly Maria's desire to see her brother isn't as strong as her desire to hold onto her things. :: It's sad that people don't realise that the "bargain" they purchased becomes a very expensive item when storage costs are added, even if there are many items to divide the storage costs between - especially if storage goes on for years and years.

You’d never guess my mom is hoarder by the looks of the house but open a closet or cupboard or-the door to the attic or crawl space-doors, surprise they are packed top to bottom front to back. Wow. My mother had quite a few boxes of designer clothes she bought and as we all left home she had her clothes most of which she did not wear in first one, then 2 then 3 bed rooms and some boxes in the loft but not really quite out of hand so I could sort it out to charity when she died but I think it made me very careful not to collect too much. It was a relief last week to spend 4 days moving mmy daughters' 60 boxes from the loft (which is now empty!!!!!) down to the more manageable garage where they can see the items and hopefully remove them in due course now they are grown up.

I am still trying as they move to get them all their own stuff - only done that for my son so far as he owns a whole house, may be I can do it now my daughter does but she has a lot of stuff and hates sorting out so I won't mention it y et. For others consider copying home videos to computer - I sent my VHS home ones to a company that copies them to CD and memory stick. I then also copied them to the computer and a back up disk and have cloud storage for home videos. Hopefully with them in 3 place they won't be lost but whether anyone wants to look at them in the family I suppose is a different matter. People could try to spread them out eg I have u ploaded the oldest family photos back to the 1890s to the internet on a public family free (as the people are dead) so that even if my chidlren don't have an interest others might if they look that family or ancestor up.

I kept hoping as we cleared our parents' house of 50 y ears to find something of value but there was nothing at all over about £200. It was amusing in the end - even things I checked on Ebay had very low value. They didn't like possessions particularly or wasting money so that was fine - it doesn't matter really. Even the new chair lift in the house for my father when older as it had to be built to go round 2 corners on the stairs had no value as no one else has stairs like that. I just found cupboard after cupboard of his incontinence pads - like some horror movie (all unused and clean however) - I got rid of them all and the chair life - I remoted it with my bear hands and a screw driver to get the house back to how it was before he was so ill. No gold nugget but lots of memories photos and books. The nicest thing was each of my parents died in that house literally - they both wanted to die at home not in hospital.

My ex brought a whole load of stuff 600 miles from his parents house when they died. They told him to take it and sell it because it would be worth money some day. Reality: he possibly sold it all for less than £1000 and paid 4x that to transport and put in storage what he couldn't fit in his attic, which he feared would fall in on him when he was sleeping.
@Irene-gq4jr
@Irene-gq4jr 4 года назад
Addendum: he spent his £10k inheritance paying for the storage, buying his ex TWO learner motorbikes she could barely ride and a laptop she used to go online and meet someone else. It is certanly a good idea to sort things out before you get too old to do it. When my mother was dying she wanted an old locket (of no value) to go to my daughter and it took ages to find it as she could not leave the bed. If instead you can start dividing things up, throwing things out if of no value, etc in advance it saves time. Also if you are going to get dementia if you have done it before that strikes so much the better. I have also scanned family photos too so they are easier to share. The Dutchman is a very nice person. The Italian lady's biggest issue is just sharing a place of a friend rather than having her own so not surprisingly she still needs a storage unit. She seemed to have an awful lots of boxes left, shoes may be. I am not sure she has really cut back at all.

So sad them flogging all Jackys mums belongings. She's in a home not gone forever! Especially silverware, it should be kept and passed down the generations, you keep it out of respect. I wonder if they told her..

The money will be used to take care of the grandma while she is still alive. I think old people's wellbeing and care is more important than keeping things to pass down the generations.

Alicia Montero Luckily our 99yr old gran lives with us and her possessions are where she left them and will be until the end. It just makes me sad knowing that's not the reality for others. The granddaughter could have kept the silver at least. Just sad😢

She has dementia. The material goods won't help her and they have already spent a great amount on storage. What they keep depends on what they feel. Totally a personal decision.

lianne benn My gran also has dementia, her belongings mean everything. She may not remember us, but she remembers her home and her belongings! I don't think finances are a pressing issue in this program, I think it's about clearing storage boxes if people want to, then filming it.
