The brother needs to STOP PAYING THE FINES. And he needs to stop cleaning up the yard. Enabling a family member to continue making bad choices is not love. I've been through this song-and-dance with a couple of family members and it only makes things worse in the long run.

I have witnessed it on a professional level, during a cleanup we found a large coffee urn that held about five gallons, it had a hole busted in the side like it got knocked off a table, we asked if we could throw it away .. Answer was "NO, do you know how much that cost".

@@billytaylor6604 That reminds me if a gentleman on this show who owned a lot of land and had all sorts of scrap on his property. When they started with the easiest stuff, a bucket with holes in it, he, rightfully, pointed out, “You can use buckets for things other than water…that is still useable, I’m keeping it.” I couldn’t argue the logic of this, but the next question is, how many buckets of that sort does one person need?

I live with a hoarder. It can be infuriating. But I taught myself to just shrug and accept that adults make their own life choices. It's their life, or lack of it. Let them do what they want.
@timmspencer4632
@timmspencer4632 2 года назад
Insignificant to you perhaps, and although it may be exhausting think how it feels to them. People who hoard most often than not have a fear of loss of control in their life. It’s a mental illness that needs to be addressed before any progress can be made. They become attached to possessions not matter the value. Telling someone that you don’t agree with the value they hold in a object and how unsafe something may be is not the answer and will always yield the same result, which is to get defensive and most often aggressive.

Usually, I would not agree. I'm not sure if an institution is required, but he definitely needs to be out of there, and probably put on some meds, along with compulsory psychiatric help. That house is not safe, and he really needs someone to look out for him. If he made some progress after being removed from that situation, great. If not, and his mental state did not improve to the point where he could look after himself better, I would have to agree. At least in a sheltered accommodation complex. Being institutionalised is not always the long term answer. Sometimes living in a supported place for six months or so is enough. Institutions are not a happy place to be, and you are surrounded by people with much more severe behaviour. That can be so traumatic that suicide happens, or the person just gives up. Hardened criminals have said they prefer jail to permanent institutionalization, that's how bad it can be. I'm not sure if you've ever been in one, or had any real life experience in the mental health services area, but putting someone in an institution long term should be the last option considered, unless there is ongoing severe danger to themselves or others.

Institutionalized? Wtf that's like the worst thing you can do to someone. How about just get him a good doctor and get him the medication he needs. I think that would do this guy a lot... not lock him up just because they don't like the way he lives. And yes mental Institutions are pretty much like jail sometimes even worse.. I'm glad you're not in charge of making calls like that and that's why people have to go to school for years to be able to make the right calls and evalutions.

Throwing away items for the first time was the most difficult and after a series of intense struggle, I've gotten rid of about 80% of the hoard. The remaining stuffs are now kept in an unused room and every now and then, I will inspect them and throw away anything that I can't see any potential use for anymore. I’m surprised the clinical psychologist who specialises in hoarding... just went straight in for the kill. He seems depressed, anxious, troubled. This program needs to be more specialised from case by case, he needs long term counselling and help, yes. It’s hard for his brother and family who obviously cares a lot about him, but you can’t just walk into a build up of what he sees as his life and expect him to just say “yeah okay! Thanks” in three days. We’re talking about years and years of issues and hoarding. Seriously. This one is one of the saddest and most inconsiderate clean ups I’ve seen. i really hope they don’t just leave him like this. I hope his family get him the help he needs and PROVIDE him with the company he needs.

I wonder what was the cause of his hoarding. Generally they reveal how the hoarder had a tragic episode in their life such as the loss of a loved one or had lost their job and much of what they owned. This guy Ricky loves to read books and collects all kinds of books as well as holds onto a lot of useless junk and trash. But after all that junk got cleaned out I bet he went right back to replacing what was hauled away.

Based on the way he was left, with most of his hoard untouched, due to safety concerns, it's so much easier for him to fall back into it. With a lot of clips I see, the hoarder no longer has much of a reminder of the old stuff, which makes it less difficult to relapse. Ricky was given a few emptied rooms, whilst having so much access to everything that wasn't removed.

Another example of the difficulty in getting appropriate mental health support for an adult family member: the bottom line - you cannot force an adult to accept mental health services (and there’s little to no advocacy support to try and get them to see / understand the benefits). It’s an incredibly helpless feeling - especially when you want so much for the family member to get the help that he / she needs.
