As Hobart’s homeless crisis worsens, Hobart City Mission Chief Executive John Stubley says it is now time “for us to dig deep into our coffers and give it back into the community”.
Due to the reality of homelessness and the current crisis in the Hobart rental housing market, the Salvation Army and Hobart City Mission have banded together to create a safe night space to provide emergency relief.
“Going into last winter it was a real shock to the Hobart community to see people on the street corner begging or sleeping in shop fronts,” he said.
“We had literally not seen that before in Hobart”.
Mr Stubley told Sky News host Paul Murray the Hobart City Mission supports over “2,000 people a year who come to (their) front door who literally don’t have any food to eat,” and any financial help enables them to provide “more emergency assistance”.
“Casual employees who a month ago, or three months ago thought their job was secure and their cash flow was fine, are suddenly going to find they’ve got no food on the table,” he said.
“There’s nothing more fundamental than not being able to feed yourself”.
Harvey Norman in Hobart was able to assist the Hobart City Mission along with Anglicare Tasmania, and the Hobart Women’s Shelter by raising $22,458 in a silent auction to help fight the city’s homeless problem.
