In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through Wet Blending. This is a surprisingly easy technique with a great ability to lay down initial tones quickly and blend different colors smoothly. Hope you enjoy.

I've been poking at the wet blending technique for a while, with very little success (aside from oils). I think this is the first video I've come across that demonstrates how to get the most out of Vallejo's retarder medium. I have renewed confidence to try! Thank you very much, Vince.

Yes, I have no issue with people using the technique, especially as they are learning, there is a safety and comfort in it that I totally understand, but there is of course places we can go beyond that as well once we have the confidence. :)

nice one. i REALLY think everyone should try this. it's easy, you almost can't mess up too badly, and it's fun to push the paint around and see those transitions start to appear

Thank you so much for all of your videos! I have watched almost all of your Hobby Cheating ones. I am a noob to this. I bought the Star Wars Legion starter set and started painting, got frustrated, quit, then started again. Anyway, loved your Jungle base video. That is what got me back in to painting them again. I would be interested in seeing you paint the Stormtroopers from the starter set (and maybe even Darth Vader too). I always hear how hard white is to paint with, so of course, I picked some of the hardest things to paint first. I honestly thought they would be easy (when I started), since they were just black and white. I kind of have an idea of how I want to paint them now. I have them based, about to start washing them, but I think I am going to attempt to do some blending on one of them.

Hey Vince, realise you are off enjoying yourself atm but when you do get a minute you may like to look into what I consider to be a really good find from the 'classic' art world. The product in question is a white acrylic paint from Schmincke, PRIMAcryl Titanium White, Now I totally agree that Warcolour white is amazingly good along with the majority of that range but the Schmincke was recommended to me along with a very bold statement that once you use this gear you'll never want to use another white again and I must say the more I use this stuff the less inclined I am to reach for any other white unless of course I am basing or painting terrain.I'd love to hear your thoughts on it if you have already used it. If you havent and want to try it out and find it difficult to obtain Stateside then let me know and I'll pick up a tube for you and pop it in the mail. Enjoy Adepticon, good luck with your entries- I am about to hop over to Crystal Brush and have a perusal!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
I agree actually. The white ink from FW is what I am using to pop up that white, but a good HBA Titanium White is the best for pure, bright white. The other paints are still useful as they can be softer for various mixes, but when you need real white, it's the way to go.

I have a question, a little off topic but you mention it is nearly all your videos. How would you zenthinal highlight/prime a vehicle, like a Landraider or Land Speeder? Or would it be a totally different way of priming?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
So it depends on the surface. This probably requires a video, but the most common way is what's called Panel modulation. Basically, you make the areas around the panel lines darker and the areas in the center of the panels lighter. It creates tonal variation when you then place color over the top.
@70rayvn
@70rayvn 6 лет назад
Ah, I think I understand. Thank you.

What products do you use to prime and zenithal with? I am using vallejo primers and it tends to rub off
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
I use Vallejo German Grey black primer, then paint over the top. I have never had a problem with it rubbing off. Is this happening on plastic, resin, metal? It could be the figures need scrubbed first, or perhaps you need a little more curing time. Not sure as I haven't had the challenge.

Hey Vince I know this is an older video. My question is to do with the Warcolours mixing white(titanium dioxide) and mixing black(black iron oxide), have you used these yet? If so what are your thoughts? Could I basically use these as a substitute to HBA or are they essentially the same thing anyways? I got them out of curiosity, but I’m kind of at a loss as to how to use them. It says they are meant to mix while keeping the mixed color saturated for tonal variation. Basically what I’m getting at is could I just wet blend with them and use the tones for my shadows and highlights?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 года назад
I haven't used them unfortuantely, but I would think you could.

Yes, are you saying you want me to do another video or asking the question? The answer is certainly yes (I probably should have picked colors that showed better on camera than white - doh!) But yes, you can do any colors with this technique.

A little off-topic but do you find there’s any difference in the actual paint formula between Scale75 and it’s Fantasy range? Or does it act the same just different color palettes? Thanks and your content is immensely appreciated!
@dangrothe7996
@dangrothe7996 6 лет назад
My experience with F&G is that it's both thinner and more transparent than the ScaleColour range. I've heard the F&G also dries a bit more satin than matte, but I can't really tell a difference.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
From my experience, they both seem about the same matte level, but they are definitely a different formula. The F&G is more thin and acts a little more like a traditional paint. The S75 standards are pure glaze medium and so quite think, more akin to Heavy Body Acrylics.

Because the paint is going on rather thickly, how do you avoid brush strokes? I'm trying this on a large flat shield now, and I'm getting some brush strokes as I lay the paint down...
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Its about how you hold the brush. I would suspect you are painting with the brush straight on, which will furl out the bristles and create the lines. If you use the side of the brush, then you won't see that happening. A little flow-aid can also help this and keep everything moving.
@MrMorden00

As a user suggestion, because I'm really struggling with this: I tried to nmm paint the scales armour skirt of High Elven Warriors, but their scales are extremely tiny to the point where I was wondering if it's possible at all. I got so frustrated that I painted them over with metal colur. :( Could you do a short video on how to nmm very small areas?
@123johnnymac123
@123johnnymac123 6 лет назад
My suggestion would be to go for an overall blend on the skirt as a whole and then use something like a black ink or a black oil wash to separate each scale, I think blending each scale at 28mm scale would be very difficult.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Sure, I will add it to the list. I have bunch of old high elves I could show this on. In general, NMM on small surfaces can be great fun, because you don't need to worry about blends as much given the small space. It's more about light lines and edges. BTW, no reason to feel bad for painting over with metal color. You tried something, didn't like how it looked and did something else. No shame in that at all. I do that ALL THE TIME. You have to find the wrong ways to invent the light bulb a lot before you find the one right way.

Hi Vince, I tried wet blending with the Vallejo retarder, but it has a horrible consistency that prevents the paint from flowing, and creates nasty brush strokes. Have you tried retarders from any other manufacturers, that might have a more fluid consistency? I'm considering buying the one from Scale75, but it's tough to tell whether or not another product would have the same issue. Thanks!

I've gotta ask... could you have chosen a worse color set to demonstrate this on...? By the end of the video it is barely discernable what is actually wet blended, and what is just your ambient light casting shadows. Unfortunately this makes what could have been really useful information almost useless, as we can't actually tell what is done by the paint. At the very least the lighting would need to be better so the blending could be more pronounced... or maybe just use better colors.
