I have been painting miniatures over 20 years. I only recently stumbled upon your videos. In the two or so weeks I've been checking out your content I feel I have learned more that in the two previous decades. Thanks for your excellent content and your contribution to the community.

Seen a lot of painters recently start doing value sketching, it’s a waaaaay easier technique for me than doing a gradual fade with layer after layer of patient glazing.

Will be doing this on some power weapons in the future. Thanks a lot! It’s obvious to me that you’re extremely knowledgeable and your videos are really helpful. My only suggestion for improvement is that you’re pallets are really crowded when you film and it can make it hard to see which colors you’re using

Looks great and so easy when you do it! Something that would be appreciated is if you could list the colors you are using in the video :). The undershading, the glazes, the edge highlight and so on. As a non-English native speaker it is sometimes difficult to hear the exact names.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Certainly, I try to do so more clearly and show a picture, but really, at the same time, don't focus on the paints or colors - near anything will work - a white, a dark blue/black or black and a dark mid-tone color (blue, green and purple work the best). In this case it was Daler Rowney FW ink white and Payne's Grey and Scale 75 Despair Green.

Trying to give nmm a go as I'm learning. So far, I get close, then get frustrated, then cover it in TMM, work in shadows and highlights there, then move on to next figure. I am not wicking enough liquid off of my brush, /headdesk. And possibly thinning my paint down too far. I'll get there.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
It's something that you have to practice over and over and over. That being said. nothing wrong with some good TMM, I love the look of TMM down with NMM shading and it's what I use the majority of the time. :)
@jasonrhome710
@jasonrhome710 5 лет назад
That's a bit of what I've been doing when I switch gears from trying to get the nmm to not break my brain. The nice thing about switching over to the tmm is getting those actual reflections to settle in my memory banks while I'm reinforcing the shadows and highlights. I'll keep giving it a go, as there is something just downright magic about when nmm gets pulled off properly. And thanks for the vids! They've been a big help with trying to learn all this stuff. Especially with getting my panic button locked behind the "It's only PAINT" shielding.

Hey Vince. I just got back into painting miniatures after quitting about 10 years ago. At that time I couldn't get the results I wanted so I said screw it and went fishing:) ur videos, holy crap, have given me techniques that have really pushed my painting.THANK YOU. Would luv to contribute if u have a patreon account. As a request can u do more of it competition level techniques, I have no plans of competing, I just want to get better

Thank you, that is very much appreciated. I don't have a patreon, I do this as a hobby and for passion (that's nothing against Patreon at all, I just mean that I don't do this for a living and I would encourage you to check out something like Miniature Monthly if you are looking for a great patreon, they are all awesome and amazing hobbyists doing this for a living. I will definitely have more competition level stuff as well. I try to do a mix so there is a little something for everyone in the series. :)

Are there cuts that I'm not seeing where he waits for it to dry, or are the glazes really drying in about a minute? I figured for it to dry completely it would take like at least 10 minutes no?
@VinceVenturella

Nope, they really dry that fast. :) - In general, the thin glazes will dry in less than a minute, my environment is also quite dry.

Hey Vince, I'm new to mini painting and your tutorials have really been a wealth of knowledge to me, thanks a ton! I've spent most of today trying to get this technique to work on a blue sword. Haven't had much luck with it yet, keeps coming out as, well, a blue, black, and white sword. I've thinned down my paints as far as I can get them, but it still comes out as blocks of color instead of any kind of blend. Any hints for a newbie?

Great video! Will look into for my seraphon units with potentially jade/gem weapons. What do think about red for khorne weapons (like reavers) if they have dull iron armor instead of the typical red?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Sure, I love this with a ton of different colors. You could do the yellow instead of white as I mentioned if you wanted them fiery, or keep this and use an intense red and go for a polished red metal look. Either way, definitely. :)

@acrylicchemist1432 6 лет назад
Great! I'm going for a mad Max Fury Road look, and I wanted to make sure there were more regions of red besides cloth/leather. Thanks Vince :)

Hey Vince, great video as always!! How would you combine this type of technique with the Zenithal Metals from Hobby Cheating 104/105? I want to do a Stormcast ethernals army and I am happy with the Zenithal for the armours, but I think the weapons deserve a little more pop. What would you recommend? Would NMM weapons look good with TMM armour? Any hobby cheating techniques for the TMM weapons? Thank you!!
@thysduque
@thysduque 6 лет назад
Nevermind, found the video for TMM weapons. Hobby Cheating 72 if anyone is interested. Although, I can't find anything about NMM weapons on models with TMM armor. Does it work? Any tips for it?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
You got ahead of me, I was going to go grab that exact video. You can also look at the Weathered, Battered steel weapons video (very near the 104/105) as I cover similar elements in that video with some extra touches. Now, as to the combination, I do it all the time. I am sure there are many who say the rules are that you don't combine TMM and NMM. I say, there are no rules but cool. If you have seen my DoK, they all do it, as I have TMM armor and NMM weapons and I think they look great. I say paint bravely and go for it.

Maybe I missed it. Do you want to prime/undercoat in the same or similar color to what you are going to glaze with?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
You can or not. It's honestly not necessary, but it can sometimes help depending on the paints you are using and how thin they are. If I was going to, I would just glaze that color over the zenithal first, let it dry, then do this work.

Great video as always, I know it's Heresy n'all but one of the best "cheats" I found as far as edge-highlighting is filling up an empty pump marker (I use Molotow 2mm) with some white acrylic ink. give it a shot if you haven't already. Oh and please do Airbrush Black Power-Armour video Vince! Been staring at that damn Deathwatch battleforce box for over a year now >_
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Interesting, i will have to try it sometime. I don't generally have an issue as the brush is sharp and relatively easy, that being said, I am always looking for other cheats. Black armor is on the list.

Despair Green from Scale 75 and Emerald 2 from Warcolours. But you could do this with only one intermediate color or any brand or type as long as it was a dark color (i.e. a dark green, blue, purple, etc.).

So, I have an idea but I'm having trouble figuring out how to actualize it; maybe you can help. For my Stormcast Eternals, I'd like to paint their weapons as if they're glowing from the inside with a sort of blue-white light (a.k.a. the Fury of Sigmar, something like electricity but I want to make it look like the energy is suffusing the metal; so in the end, I want something like this (www.etftrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Encouraging-Signs-for-Hot-Steel-ETFs.jpg) but with a blue-white color spectrum. Its the dark edges (which in red hot steel represent cold areas and/or impurities) that I want to be able to capture, since I feel it really adds an element of visual interest to the weapons, instead of just making it a solid glow.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
If you look in the PmP, Omri did his stormcast weapons as though they were glowing with internal heat. I think you would do the same thing but with the White to Dark blue/black spectrum. The key would be to have the very center near white and then taper quickly to largely a mid and then darker blue.

Good video, I'v dabbled in none metallic metal styles before with mixed resaults or what to call it, semi happy but this seems to be a pretty fast way to get a basic type of it done pretty quick, makes me interested in doing it for my next project. but probly not my current one as I'm in the middle of painting 155+ Night goblins (um.. Moonclan) hahah... I'm slowly losing my mind.. my plan is to get all of them done within a week or perhaps a little more. I'v done some custom Netters since I wanted more dynamic poses for them that I'm pretty happy with ^^ imgur.com/a/ZXcYqdl

Your videos are the best ones on YT, period. I particularly like the ones that are more on competitive mini painting side. Keep up the good work. It would be really cool if you hosted an online mini competition some day :) Also, is there a chance to see a gallery of your Daughters of Khaine?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
So a few responses - We do a yearly painting competition through the PmP Community, so join us there (you can find the link in any of my PmP videos). Myself and some of the other senior community members judge it. I try to mix between competition style and something for everyone, but there will always be more competition stuff coming soon. I am finishing my last unit of Daughters for my planned work, so I may do a full gallery then, though I may wait and do a little more later. I am going to see what I can do. :)
