In this Hobby Cheating Video, I walk you through the detailed process for doing deep, realistic flesh. Tuck in, as this is a long process, but the effects are worth the time. Hope you enjoy.

If you are not an educator you have truly missed your calling. You have gotten an old man like me actually more interested in painting than playing the game. Thank you for taking the time to do these, I do appreciate it.

I think the best advice in this video is "To make a fig look good, you've got to make a fig look bad." I think that's probably the most important thing you can learn as a beginner. Whenever I'm teaching people, I always say "Whenever you're painting, you'll always reach a point where things will look a lot worse before they start to look better."

As always great video. I learned so much just listening to this, while painting some terrain doors. "If you want a miniature to look really good, first you got to make it look bad". So great! Thanks again Vince.

I would love to see a video on the "browner" skin tones. Most Caucasian skin tone videos lean toward Northern European. Standard Asian and African are also fairly easy. But tones such as North African or Mexican or Southern Europe are very difficult.

interesting point about sub assemblies, on this model how do yo ensure that the face and body skin tones match after assembly
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
I normally take each section to completion before moving on anyway (i.e. I don't always paint exactly like this), when you are doing 30-40 glazes for flesh, you will just end up at the same place by eyeball. If you are doing less steps, same is true, as long as you follow roughly the same steps, then you will arrive at close enough to the same place.

Great tutorial Vince. I already dropped everything I was doing to try this out, but I have one question. What tips could you give in colour choices to this method with a pure white skin?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
So I assume you are looking for vampiric type skin (or perhaps Slaaneshi daemon) - something moving very, very pale in tone? I have a full tutorial planned on this, but my basic advice is to move the whole thing up the spectrum some. I would stay away from pure white as the skin, because then you have no where to highlight. I would aim at the top of the spectrum where I was here, and remove some of the richer pink flesh tones. Focus more on the pale flesh, light purples to shade and a touch of pure white to highlight. If you remove the pink tones, and focus on grey, pale flesh, white and purple - you should see some good results.

@@VinceVenturella Hi, again! Sorry to res another necro thread. But.. I'm doing a model as a gift for a very close friend of mine. She's absolutely in love with faeries. I've got the model picked out and kit-bashed, but I'm having trouble with the color scheme. Her favorite color is pink and I'm planning on doing the mini as her, essentially. She is also exceedingly pale. I want to do a transparent / sheer material for the garment. So, conventional caucasian skin' s not gonna work too well. Much like the previous poster, I need to pale it up a bit. My thinking would be to maybe mix in a little Pallid Wych (or something similar) with the types of colors you've indicated? I'm thinking the green in the PW would grey out the overall effect a bit? Or am I totally off-base? Basically, I'm going for more creamy porcelain than undead.
@shadergod
@shadergod 4 года назад
Actually... Now that I think about it. Would some kind of very light bone be a better choice? It would lighten the overall color scheme up, but not wash it out due to cool + warm? I've got a couple of practice minis ordered. So, I'm gonna do some experimenting.

according to the Warlord Bolt Action US army paint guide it recommends to use Army Painter 'Tanned Flesh' as the base for skin and it looks absolutely horrible. I hope highlighting the face etc can somehow make it look better. thanks for this guide. I need a new strategy to fix this.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
My best advice is find a new mid-tone skin tone. This is one of the reasons I don't like giving paint recipes, then people feel shackled to them. The reality is, you could use a wide swath of nearly any mid-tone caucasian flesh and get a good result.
@WilliamPageCN

So I just finished this on a Malifaux ronin! It was very difficult being that she is so small but I have to say I really like the result. My question: I bought retarder medium and used it but I'm not sure why. What is it? How is it different than the glaze medium or thinner medium? I'm just don't know when and why I'd use these things.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
Retarder medium (which should be mixed with a little water) is then mixed into the paint to make it stay wet longer. It helps with wet blending and getting smoother transitions between colors.

Can I use Vallejo Glaze Medium instead of using the retarder and thinner? I have retarder and Glaze Medium and airbrush thinner. Which should I use?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Glaze, thinner and airbrush thinner are all going to work for you in this case yes. The retarder just extends your working time for wet blends, but you could also replace with more glazing.

I love your videos. I don't know if you are still doing these Hobby Cheating ones, but if you could do an Asian skin tone one, I would appreciate it. I found ones for darker, grey, pink, and decrepitude sort of ones, but was wondering if you have one for the Asian tones. If you already did one, sorry I missed it. If not, PLEASE!

Hi Vince I am a recent fan trying to improve my painting skills. What paint retarder do you recommend?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
I like Warcolours to be honest. It's still a liquid (as opposedto Vallejo which is a gel) and works very, very well. There are also some generics you can mix from Liquitex, etc. from the art store that are quite good.
@letitburn6
@letitburn6 5 лет назад
Hey. Short question what shading colors would you suggest to use for detailed tau skin? 🤔 I was thinking about Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue, Ultramarine and Blue Game Ink but I would like to take a more "natural" approach and I'm not sure what color variation I should go for?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Deep purples leaning into crimson. You need to add the red tones to bring life into the composition and red = life to the human subconscious and will also work to be a warmer shadow to the cold tone.
@letitburn6
@letitburn6 5 лет назад
Hmm I'll need to do some test runs before. Do you have any specific color in mind? Btw. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up your awesome work!

what color-ish's did you wash and drybrush with? I hear white/grey for the zenithal?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
So in this case, I didn't really wash and drybrush too much. She's has a lot of soft curves. if anything, just a soft wash with something like an agrax and the normal white. Honestly, though, my current plan if I was doing something like her would be to maybe give it a thinned wash of something like agrax thinned down and then shoot some hull red from below.
