In this video, we continue our week of Hobby Cheating with Icy, Grey and Black fur. These more monotone colors can often have some challenges, but we look at ways to spice it up. Hope you enjoy.

Hi Vince! For black wolves: every time I add a layer of black ink/wash, should I do another very light blue drybrush?

Hi Vince! These great furry videos got me purring. ;) How would one go about painting a furry animal with stripes (like Imperial Assault's Nexus, or a tiger)? I'm guessing you'd obviously have some wash over "base" fur color, and then dry-brush overit, but that's where the question arises for me: if the beast is essentially say cepia and stripes are black, is it OK to dry brush with the same color (something like ubshanti bones, depending on the progress on fur building)? And also how early in the "several layers of dry brush / wash" would you do it? As soon as the start over the base color? Or as late as possible to decrease effort? Thanks fur your help! (pun intended)

I would say either could work. My instinct is to say once the base is down, put on the stripes. So the thing with stripes on animals is that they aren't solid. Google a tiger and really look at the stripes, really look. You will see the orange and other colors intermixed, you will see fuzzy edges where fur overlaps. My steps would look something like this. 1) Base color 2) Stripes 3) Drybrush of original or Original + Slighly lighter tone 4) All over wash 5) Light drybrush focusing on the higher areas 6) lightly wash or stipple the darker stripe color into the stripes to reinforce in their centers. Repeat as necessary. Hope that helps.

Thanks Vince! It does help, indeed, and again, I'll add. I'm not entirely sure I understand what you mean by "orange and other colors intermixed" but I do see the overlaps. Speaking of laps, I happen to have a similar-to-tiger furred cat on my lap, and I can look at her all day long (she's a cutie ;). I can see that non-black hair partially overlaps the 'sides" of the black stripes, sure. And I know from cleaning her hair that the hairs themselves are striped (which i keep marveling about, as the path of her stripes doesn't visibly change over time, even though her hair grows and goes). I do see that the "base" brown tabby is visible where her hair "splits", even on stripes. So maybe that's what you're refering to? Ref pic for the cat (tried to find a better one from the top / side, but google isn't my friend today ;) applemeeko.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/tabby-cat-sleeping.jpg

Yep, my advice is play with it and don't be afraid to just do another quick cycle. You'll get there. :)

time has passed, I cant find guilleman blue anymore. do you think the best alternative is a wash or a contrast?(both diluted)
@VinceVenturella

The blue contrast paint thinned 3-1 should give you a good likeness.

@@VinceVenturella I experimented a bit and the closest to it was vallejo blue ink with glaze medium, thanks though!

What would you suggest for a white wolf?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Depends on the fur an consistency, this is still on my list. That being said, my basic plan would be some washes of mid grey/very slight purple and then white grey and white drybrushes repeated in the same sequences as here.

Loving the icy wolf color scheme. Do you remember He-Man's Battle Cat? I was wondering how to go about a painting a panther/tiger model similar to the battle cat. Battle-Cat s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/90/1b/a0/901ba068b8ae3347510ed45dfe49286a.jpg

I appreciate the reference, but oh, I remember Battle cat. So if we break down the art, we have the following. A brown green base, ochre stripes, thin black/grey stripes and light grey fur light catches. So that's our color palette, when dealing with fur on a flat model (i.e. without the texture) it's important to paint the texture, so you would paint small strokes for the stripes and build them up like freehand. I would then paint the grey fur with quick strokes and glaze over that with a very thin base green. If the model has the texture, then I would just make sure that individual strands of the fur are somewhat overlapping. What I mean is that if you look at your reference picture, you see how the green pokes into the ochre and black-grey (i.e. it's creating the illusion of overlapping strands of hair/fur). Hope that helps, doing fur on a flat model is still on my list of future tutorials for sure.

Thanks for the advice! I'm considering using those Wolf color schemes. For a Hordes Circle of Orboros Warpborn and some Farrow Minions(hogs). I have enough variety of paints to get the grey, black and icy wolf scheme. Need more reds, oranges, browns for the red/brown version. privateerpress.com/files/products/72070_Skinwalkers5manWEB.jpg The Icy Wolf scheme to make this caster model stand out. privateerpress.com/files/products/75044_MidasWEB.jpg And this model from Prodos Games shop.prodosgames.com/1-large_default/anubis.jpg Model I'm considering for using that Battle-Cat color scheme on. Need to see if I can use the head as a headswap for a model with heavy armor. Similar to a chaos Terminator/Marine. www.spellcrow.com/images/UmbraTurris/SPCH1401TigerianWithTwoHandedWeapon.jpg

Only recently got into painting miniatures. I'm thinking the Raek in black needs something to make it pop. Also the Tyranid conversion, just trying to think of ways to make it pop. It is meant to be mostly purple tones for the carapace, bone for the legs and need to paint the claws bone as well. 1drv.ms/i/s!AovHI6hRfLr4gYg-2gEC8qvmv_W1iw Also these are my trollbloods, I need more variety of browns for the leathers. And thinking of changing the color of the cloaks, coats to a different color. To make the models too brown and green. 1drv.ms/i/s!AovHI6hRfLr4gYg96jdHwn7aMh66Og

I used a warm zenithal highlight for painting a bear. While drybrushing the fur I got some paint on the dwarf that rights him (is on model, so could not been done separately). Any tips on how to restore the zenithal highlight so I can glaze the rider?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
It's tough, at that point, you could rebrush the zenithal into place. It's likely something you just want to try to correct at the time you glaze with a little extra shading and highlighting in that small area.
