In this video, we cover how to do the large color transitions between dark and light for bone horns such as you see in many games workshop models. Hope you enjoy!

Another one of your videos that really helped me figure out what I should be doing. For some reason, I just could not figure out how to approach horns. Thanks again!

Thank you, I came to this technique after a fair amount of experimentation. Glad you enjoyed and I hope it was useful.

Have a question Vince but just want to start out by saying I’ve been watching you videos for a long time and they have helped me improve my painting by leaps and bounds. Keep up the great work. Now for the question, what was the base color of the horn?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
In this case, I think it was Aged White, but really, any warm, ivory colored white will work just fine.

Another question Vince. I’m getting some bad coffee stains with the Agra’s earth shade and seraphim sepia. What’s the best way to avoid this?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Smooth application, wick of the excess,it will also stain a little. The best bet is to have a little medium to mix in with the shade (like Lahmia medium and thin it out just slightly). It will always happen some and you'll have to navigate that with future layers.

Just writing for my own reference. No questions, but I should one day count out how many HC videos went into this one model I'm slowly working on. We're looking at 8 so far.. or more, if you count ALL the glazing ones. And the thinning ones. And the various airbrush ones. Ah dear. And you'd be horrified at how bad parts of it are; your lava sword video didn't convert into a BIG axe nicely. I tried, but that axe blade is twice the thickness of the sword. Sepia wash: Start 2/3rds-ish up, brush down. Agrax wash: Start lower, brush down. Repeat both steps. Sepia ink w/ thinning medium: Draw lines of varying heights for the striations. Sepia ink (looked stronger): Draw sharper lines inside the previous lines to reinforce striations. Ivory: Glaze from the middle, brushing up. Repeat, starting higher than last time. Thinned ivory into offwhite: Glaze even higher up the horns, mostly the tips. Rinse brush, smooth edges. No paint on the brush. Bone white: The tips of the horns, brushing up. The tippy tippy tops, as vince says. Stark white: Touch the tips. Akin to edge highlight, only the very point of the tips. Sepia wash and ivory: Brush from the bottom of the middle up, then the top of the middle down. Repeat until happy with that glaze. Orange with a smidge of brown or orchre: Thin out until it's bordering on a filter. Glaze over middle area. Vince points out that white/black/brown is uninteresting, so is obviously into red-heads.

That would be Kalahari Orange (like the desert) and not Calamari Orange (like the yummy squid) :) Happy to see some Scale 75 paint, I'm really coming around to that stuff and it's just an absolute pleasure to work with.

That is hilarious - how did I read that wrong this whole time? Yes, I am loving the paint, it blends very smoothly and it's matte finish is really second to none. I have also just got in some warcolours, I am excited to give those a try and should have a review out in the next few weeks.

Have you changed the way you do horns since the release of this video?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Still a perfectly valid method, I will often vary the colors to a degree, I also have an alternative video which is about striations - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AnY7gwABMVE.html

How would this technique be deployed for painting antlers?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
So much like a did the single horns here (though you could go in the opposite direction if you like, i.e. light to dark instead of dark to light). But you would build the shadows toward either the base or the tips, smooth out the transition and add the deep brown/orange filter in the middle.
@jakobos93
@jakobos93 7 лет назад
+Vince Venturella is there only one base though, or is there a separate base for every tip that breaks off?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
If you are going dark at the base (where they connect to the skull), there would be a single dark base. If you are going dark at the tips, each would get dark with the mid-tone likely starting around the split.
@frocat5163
@frocat5163 5 лет назад
This technique is actually the right way to paint antlers. Horns are different, often darker at the tips. Just look up pictures of cow and antelope horns.

What is your base color for the horns?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 2 месяца назад
Hard to say at this point, but any buff, dark ivory or similar warm white will work.

Your building up such a fantastic series of awesome painting videos here Vince. I can't help but think that the title of the series isn't helping them come up in the searches. I would seriously recommend you go in and rename all the videos 'how to'

But it could also become its own "brand" ;) I think he should keep the title for now. But I also think that he could rename "Warhammer Weekly" to "Wargaming Weekly" by now, because he also talks about KoW and 9th Age (and other stuff).
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 лет назад
I went with both for this series, I like Hobby cheating but I added the "How to" to everything and added tutorial as he mentioned. We talked about the name change a couple of times, but in the end, we just like Warhammer Weekly for now, it's like "having a coke", even when you are drinking Dr. Pepper ;)

You're basing all of your thoughts on a false premise, though. Antlers and horns are two different things, and what you're describing are antlers rather than horns. Antlers are bone and appear as you describe; darker at the base and lighter towards the tips. Actual horns are often lighter at the base and darker at the tip, particularly those in antelope and cows. I think the video and techniques are great, but it's not an accurate description of how to paint horns...it's how to paint antlers.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Fair enough, i have talked more about bone, it's good to know and I will make the distinction (it's ironic, because the things that actually look like Antlers on GW models tend to be highlighted like you are describing horns). The reality is, it doesn't matter. Adherence to realism aside, the techniques will work regardless of direction and the choice of direction should usually be made for artistic purposes over realism (i.e. keeping the alternating Dark/Light/Dark, etc.) But i appreciate the clarification as I do want to be precise.
