I really enjoy these videos. I've been painting miniatures since 1987 and I'm still learning new tricks & time savers from these.

Just brilliant! You have a knack of explaining without getting technical and that makes for a perfect tutorial for me. I bought a bunch of oils when I started my cockroach Tyranids to use as washes (after watching BuyPainted's tutorials) but since moving on from them (tut tut an unfinished project-but the gaunts were just killing me haha) I haven't used them much except from some panel lining on my Dark Angels vehicles. I am very guilty of being scared to weather and to be honest haven't seen a good tutorial demonstrating how it's done- well I can't say that anymore. Awesome stuff and thank you very much indeed. By the way I have seen a lot of your work on various FB pages so I subscribed to your youtube channel but this is the first time I have watched one through. If this is anything to go by I am about to step up my game as like I said you are easy to follow. I am wanting to start learning some advanced techniques as I feel it's time to go beyond the 'Citadel system' of layering and edge highlights etc- not that there is anything wrong with that system but I am just itching to learn how to do these advanced techniques. Thanks again Vince, you are a true master of the brush.

Thank you, that is very much appreciated. :) - I say don't be afraid, the worst you can do is end up somewhere you didn't intend, I am a big believer in no mistakes, just happy accidents. If you run into any questions, happy to assist.

Great tutorial, thank you very much, as always. It's the first time I'm actually seeing you do a 40k model, looking eagerly forward to the finished model!

It's been a while (other than the Cannoness for competition) for sure. It's been great fun and we are in the home stretch.

You brought up an excellent point here and I think its one a lot of people shy away from; and that's the weathering of something like freehand that you've put a lot of time and effort into. I think that initial instinct is to try and leave something like that pristine, but if the surfaces around it have been damaged and you have this perfect looking area its visually very jarring and right away your eye picks up that something is wrong. No matter how many times I see the trick with underlining scratches and dings with a light color, it never ceases to amaze how the 3D effect appears almost magically; you'd swear that if you ran a finger over the surface, you'd feel the damage.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
Yep, it really does require some gritting of the teeth for sure. When you spend 20 or 30 hours on freehand, to then draw over the top and scratch it up feels almost like heresy, but the end the result is you get something that actually feels real.

That looks fantastic. I've been messing around with Ammo of Mig's Oilbrushers, and they're a really convenient way for beginners to experiment with oils without a lot of hassle.

Some masterfully done basic weathering effects without using what, after all, are heavily pre-diluted oil paints(as the AK streaking grime, or the Ammo Mig weathering effects). The way you have gotten the 3D effect in the painted chips and scratches is great. A very useful tutorial, Mr. Daredevil(14 hours painting a freehand and you weather it? 8O).
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
No, no - not 14, - 40 ;) Jut as in writing, you can't be afraid to kill your darlings. I drew inspiration from people like Richard Gray, who does some of the most amazing freehand I have ever seen, and then weathers and chips it and it only enhances the overall feeling. Thanks for watching and thanks for appreciating, I know you have a great artist's eye, so that means a great deal.

Mate these videos are so in depth, you make this look so easy! I've just gotten back into the hobby after a 20 year hiatus. I got myself a basic kit of Vallejo Game colour. Have you any tips for creating a rust effect with a basic set of paints only? I'm thinking of adding brown/orange/red to the gold or gunmetal for this but I'm honestly out of my depth 😂. I was a dip in the pot and straight onto the model kind of kid but I've got myself a wet palette this time around for a bit more finesse. Any help would be very much appreciated.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella Год назад
So most of what I talk about here can be done with some pretty simple colors. A good brown and orange can make a rusty color for rivets or streaks. Your chips can be mixes of brown and black and so on.

This video is super helpful! Several times in it you mentioned how you already varnished and planned to do so again before metallics. When and how often do you spray your minis with varnish? Do you always varnish before metal and if so how do you protect the metal?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
It depends on the piece. If I am going to be using oil paints and decals, as I do with the titan, it's going to be effectively between each layer. With a normal figure, depending on it's use, I may not varnish at all. I never spray over metallics, as that just kills them. I find they are tough enough on plastic and have never had an issue.

I’m a bit late to the party on this one but, as ever, fantastic video Vince, great techniques explained well. I did your “ruining your great work” class at Nova, love your battle damage. My question is though, what would be your colour choices if you were putting damage on black power armour, say Raven Guard, or Iron Hands, or Templars or even Black Legion? Thanks
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Yeah, black is always tough, because nothing really shows well. The simple answer is some brown, trending to a lighter brown rust to make it stand out a little a lighter grey light line under the damage. (side note: this is why I rarely paint anything black, it's just a fairly boring color).
@tannage

Hi there! Great video, very informative and I'm going to.give this a go. One question I have though is whether we have to use oil paints for the rust streaking. Is there any way to do it with acrylics?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
You can certainly do the same with several other types of products. AK interactive makes streaking grime, but that's enamel and you still want mineral spirits. You can also do some fun tricks with just inks or contrast paints, contrasts ability to shrink up actually makes it interesting and useful for this task.

Good stuff, i was wondering how you would make it look like the metal (that the machine is meant made out of presumably) underneath the paint is showing through. I feel like a deep scar should have some dull/dirty metal in it too.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
In general, you would do so by adding some brown to the mix for a more rust color stippled in tiny dots into the scratch. In general, you want to avoid putting any actual steel in there, though a few light stipples of a dark steel can sometimes work as long as it is minimal.

Very good video, as always. Thank you for sharing. One question though; how would I tackle black armor? Would I rather go with dark and lighter greys then?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
If you mean, damage on the armor, yes, you can do a lot with mid and lighter greys under them as the light catch (and also just some normal browns), but browns will show battle damage less. Darren Latham also has a video on his channel until May 18th that shows battle damage on a black space marine armor.

Its much easier when you paint highlights first. If you have little accident and spill white you can easily cover it with a chip.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
Yes, I have done it both ways and I just find doing the highlight after easier. Not sure why, but it's just the way I've found it easier, but you can certainly do it that way as well (black does go over white easier than the reverse).

I noticed that you didn't use a wet pallet here. Was it because of the type of paint, how long you would be using the paint, or some maybe other reason?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
In this case, it was convenience more than anything during shooting (as I hadn't figured out how to get the wet palette on screen yet). You could use either, as this tends to be a fast process, but I will say most of the time when I do this, I do use a wet palette.
@RobNorton

Nah, the best paint palettes are all messy :) - I don't use it very much as I usually use my wet palette, but it doesn't show well on screen.
