I gotta tell ya: the majority of friendly, stable, “normal” wargamers do not frequent hobby stores. They order shit online and play with trusted friends at their homes without all the bullshit, sales pressure, smells, and freaky fucks that haunt the local game shop. You don’t realize how big the community really is.
True, but if you live in a big city I see most of the hobby centered around game stores, or nowadays game/restaurants that specialize in these sorts of things. People don't have the room at home to have host multiple groups and games etc...
I have a hard time believing any story that goes "Girl walked in and everything went sideways" It really sounds like a greentext fantasy "and everybody clapped" sort of tall tale. I'm not sure if I just go to a game store where people actually behave like humans so I don't see it, or this really only occurs in the bored mind of someone who wants internet points.
There are also groups of people who like to make everyone out in the hobby to be horrible, I know a certain far left wargaming subreddit that do it a lot to try and enforce their view of what the hobby should be. It's not unlikely these types are feeding NE fake stories.
@@captainweekend5276 That's a good point, I've seen it too with certain groups trying to label wargamers as bad people, just the disconnect of never seeing irl what people say happens online all the time. I've gone to quite a few LGS over the years so figure should have at least seen it once. Most people I know are just fat nerds that like to play war with plastic soldiers, which is exactly why I like the game. Fake stories to try and make people that just enjoy the hobby look bad are in pretty bad taste.
The next few will be a lot more positive - I've been saving them up :) I get a lot more negative found for me or sent to me unfortunately. I do tend to treasure the positive ones. If you actually have any positive ones then send them over!
Right! It's so annoying that it seems like most of those who play Space Wolves tend to be like this. We already have a hard enough time as it is with just playing them lmao
my sister used to come to the store with me as she was also into the hobby, usual would happen but she took it in her stride as she knows what "nerds" are like, she is still into the hobby and comes to tourneys and things with me which is nice.

Years ago my sister went into GW Lakeside to get me a few minis for xmas (metal Sgts Telion and Chronus, as they’d just come out). I text her which minis they were, and the prices, so it should have been a quick and easy transaction. SHOULD have been. It took her over 25 mins to get the Staff Member to understand what she wanted and that she wasn’t after anything else but those 2 minis. She ended up calling me and passing the guy the phone because she just couldn’t get him to back off from offering her all the other stuff (more minis, paints etc). She’s never got me any GW stuff since! 😜
Guy who got me into Warhammer is the most insufferable Leman Russ apologist. HH spoilers below: He maintains that Russ killing Horus was “completely in character” and “doesnt cheapen Big E’s final battle on Terra”, claims Russ was toying with Lion when the brawled, Claims he could have ought fought Angeron on more than one occasion and it goes on and on and on. He also REFUSES to admit that Horus duped Russ about Prospero. I cannot wait till HH2 comes out because I plan to CRUSH him with as many Dreadwing Terminators as possible.
The whole narrative of the Horus Heresy crumbles to shit if the loyalists just rolled in and virus bombed Istvan 5. Horus would be like “you know, I didn’t actually think this through very much…” Also at the Siege of Terra, traitors fire a spread of cyclonic torpedoes around the fault line near the palace. The tectonic action would heavily damage the palace. Or also, just virus bomb Terra and claim the win.
I only know one Space Wolf player, my friend, and the only faction he shit talks is the Space Wolves. In our friend group they seem kinda shit on the table and we joke around about them. He likes them for their aesthetic, and he is not hostile at all. Edit: Thinking about it now, most of my friends picked they're factions by aesthetic. We got an Asian friend who likes Mecha, plays Tau and painted them Eva colours. Another Friend who liked the look of Orks. The Space Wolf player who is Dutch and loves mead. I liked the more grounded military look of the guard. But then we got that one friend who can't make up his mind and keeps getting new armies.
I remember at one point the Birmingham games workshop store had 2 female employees at one point, I used to visit on the odd occasion to find an empty store all day, it was almost as if the demographic was scared away from the store because girls were there! I went in and struck up a conversation with them and purchased a ork Boyz boxed set. Having then had customers come into me and ask for stuff because they assumed I was their manager and I worked in the store. I asked them if this was a isolated case and the girls both broke down claimed they were on the verge of getting the sack because the store had no footfall and the customers were repulsed by the staff members. Sadly the girls only lasted another 2 weeks before they were made to resign. Replacing them with over enthusiastic smelly socially awkward neckbeards whom were only interested in pushing what was in the new white dwarf.
You’d think it’d be the opposite- pretty sad. I know I go to the restaurant with the cute waitress twice as much as the other one- I’d love to say it’s for the food but hey- a quick smile makes my day. I’m not a creep about it but I’m not the average hobbyist either

I did also think that perhaps it was a unicorn thing that it just messed with the demographic and spoiled the customers vision that people were scared to go in. Space wolves were one of my first armies when I was 14 way back in 2009-2010. Never really liked the other players and they didn’t seem too keen on me as I never liked the whole Viking thing very much. Always thought Vikings were boring. I modeled mine as pre-Colombian Native Americans. Lots of feathers, animal and tyranid trophies, totems, bird skulls, and trinkets. I even made some poorly done totem poles on the power packs they have in their back. I also used the old school lizardmen parts I could get my hands on and never used a bearded head. It was a really flavorful army even if it was poorly painted, but I eventually almost entirely turned my back on the imperium, except for sisters and Templars, and went with chaos and a lot of xenos. Big fan of the channel for comfy painting time and for at work, have a great day!
The Months of Shame were pretty cool. Probably one of the best things the Wolves did in the lore. The battle between Angron and Leman that was laid out in Betrayer was also pretty cool, in terms of lore and world building.
I moved out when I was a kid and had to familiarise myself with the new store in the new town (well, I moved to a city so it was a suburb). Spent a bit of time in there, getting to know the guys etc. Walked in one day and there was a kid sitting at the table painting, with the store guy painting across from him. We had a bit of a chat before the kids mum came in and he put his stuff away and said goodbye and left. Hobby store guy turned to me and said "isn't he so inspirational." I was a bit puzzled, and said "ah.. . Why? ?" He looked as confused as I did for about ten seconds, then said, "You know...." and raised his hands in the air. I looked at the kid as he was still within eyeshot of the store, trying to see what I missed, then looked at him again and furrowed my brows in confusion. "You know..." He said, "He has no hands?!" I'd been watching this kid paint for fifteen minutes and had not realised he had no hands. 🤦♂️
I owned an official Warhammer stockist in Asia… girls just played and browsed like everyone else… wonderful change from UK. However they always played Underworlds, AoS or skirmish games. Never the heavier games.
The first time I started 40k, I had bought a starter box and traded the Dark Eldar out for some Space Marine bikers. A couple of the regulars at the store were telling me about the various Space Marine chapters I could pick from. I was strongly advised not to choose Space Wolves. Because Bill played Space Wolves. Bill didn't like the idea of anyone else in the area playing HIS army.
I remember the first lgs tournament I played as a noob against a space wolf player. He knew I was new. We started the game with him explaining how 2/3 of his army had different wargear than the models had... an army of shield and axe wielders had a huge shooting phase with heavy bolters and assault cannons, by turn 2 he was charging, getting benefit of cover from his shields (this was 9th) and swinging str5 ap-3 3 dam axes 4 times with each model. I was using heroic interventions, he stopped me and whined i can only do one per phase... which I now know is a lie because my statblock said can target this character for 0 cp even if used on another model. Also my fights first fought second because space wolves were charging. All in all his space wolves took little damage from my custodes because his army also apparently had a 4+ invul save. All in all worst game experience I ever had, I talked to him about it with another player who was experienced and called him out. This space wolf guy ended the conversation with, "well im autistic so, i forget things" 😒

I am one of these people who have shit attitude to space wolfs. It is mainly because idea of space vikings was thrown out of the window and replaced with wolf lord who rides with his wulfen friend on a wolfwolf.
my best mate plays wolves and he's the best guy. total gamer chad. I still bolter them all down with inferno bolts, but its always a good bit of carnage by turn 4. he just enjoys the lore as what it is; stories. As for writing lists, we tend to agree before we write what type of list we are writing; the odd cheesehammer list game can be good fun if you're both just going all out.
I think my biggest issue in my store, a small gw store in the us, is meta chasing. There is one guy in the store who will look up meta army guys right before the codex comes out, and will then play only that for a few months till the next codex comes out. He also hates losing and so when he gets in a bad spot he will just walk out of the store, leave his stuff, and be gone for 15 minutes to an hour. He did this during a store apocalypse game and i was on his team. His tantrum caused my team to lose by one point. He isn’t a bad guy but his meta chasing and immaturity really does get on people nerves.
I agree his leaving the store is shitty, but could it be the lesser of two evils? Maybe this guy has learned to remove himself from situations before he flips his shit. Not saying that makes it ok, but you saying he isn't a bad guy makes me wonder if this is him being self aware and trying to improve.

All I am saying is it is annoying to have him show up with a meta list and when the dice fails him or you start winning, he leaves, it is kinda a dick move. That said he puts love into his work and seems like recently he has toned down slightly. He does want to make an alpha legion army now though so lets hope it isn’t insane.

Prime them white, it's easier to cover white with black than it is to cover black with white paint, because that will take multiple coats and obscure details.

Space Wolf player here, and I like to think I'm not one of the hyper-aggressive sterio types. I also have a few factions as theres several armies i like the aesthetic or lore or playstyle of. About the only time i get "aggressive" is if i am running wolves and i get into a bit of meme worthy roleplay with thousand sons players. References to the rivalry in lore or them being a traitor army in a bit of a tongue and cheek manner. When i play a traitor army it becomes "death to the false emporer" and the like. Nothing more than livening up the atmosphere and never any actual insults. You play an army its just more fun to play like them. That being said the "hyper aggressive" SW players dont, as you read ANY of the lore and it becomes very obvious SW are very disciplined, in and out of combat. They fight with bestial savagery against their oponent, yes, but there is cunning, discipline, and they are not hyper aggressive at all. They hold respect of other powerful warriors and as far as i know have high respect for GK. And they hold respecting powerful warriors in high reguard as if you dont, that is often when you make a mistake and your saga ends. Baseless savagery has two outcomes in a SW eyes, a quick death on the battlefield or an eventual fall to chaos (the sons of Russ are resistant to Chaos and extreamly loyal but there have been a few battle brothers who have fallen to the worship of Khorne) I also didnt get into them for their "space viking" asthetic but saw the thunderwolf calvary when i was browsing for a loyalist faction to add to my collection and thought "thats too bad ass to pass up" got them, got the SW venerable dread, and a few other units, discovered Bjorn as an option in the SW ven dread kit and started looking into Bjorn's history and background lore as I never seen an HQ dreadnought before, and got into the lore that way. I dont look down on anyone who gets into an army just cause they like the aesthetic, not everyone who plays enjoys the lore, and most of us go by aesthetic when we first got into it or when adding a new faction and the lore comes secondary if we like that aspect of the hobby as well. And my understanding of the "Months of Shame" was inquisition quarantied a planet for witnessing grey knights who battled alongside the SW against a chaos incursion, SW assisted the citizens escape by blocking the inquisitions line of fire with their ships, and loads more interactions as the inquisition chased the refugees, even performing extermonatis on planets the ships just stopped for fuel on, and Inquisitor Lord Kysnaros used grey knights to attempt to fight SW as a sort of revenge for humiliating him and would make extreamly demeaning demands of the SW in order to stop. and the term "months of shame" was coined by the GK because they thought it was shameful of Inquisition for their actions and basically hiding behind the GK. SW and GK never wanted to fight each other to begin with and very there were great losses on both sides, not just the GK. The "war" was never SW against GK either, it was against the independant Inquisitor Lord Kysnaros and ended when he was beheaded and the inquisition agreed to stay away SW planets and space. So yes, SW won, yes it was a MAJOR flex, yes SW are badass for winning, but no SW didnt win a war against GK. And as far as i know both sides hold the other in high reguard. So any SW players who call GK players weak due to it is very well mistaken This being said ive never met any hyper aggressive SW or any faction player. Everyone ive met in the hobby has been chill, down to earth, and great lads (except for that one guy that absconded with my Imp Knights after i paid him to magnetize them)
I tend to not play the games - i do the painting side of things with the intention of learning at some point in time. Fortunately i have never seen this behavior towards women, im also lucky that the manager at my local GW store is also a woman and a very nice and knowledgeable lady and i have had some great conversations about the hobby. My daughter is wanting to get into the hobby which i think is great but i would dread her coming up against this. She is fortunate that i do not resemble the typical nerd/geek stereotype, i have the same language and approach as Major Kill, im married but also been around the block a few times, im an ex doorman so don't suffer fools or bullies and im 6'2", 19 stone, im also from Wigan so subtly isn't my strong point. So i have taught her to know her value and know and speak her mind which i hope serves her well. No need for bullies or people taking advantage of others, i have had one occasion where i did see some one trying to bully a young lad in a store i visited - i just went over and told him to do one, not putting up with other peoples sh*t. People that take ownership of their plastic crack faction, saying it's "my team" and "we did this or that" are worse than sport fans that do the same, if that's even possible. YOU did not win the premier league, world series, stanley cup, or superbowl, unless your name is on the roster, and you suited up and played. Same goes for your chosen army of little plastic men. You don't get to take some kind of fake pride that your preferred army beat another army in a novel. It's absurd. Wargaming is great. Building and painting and playing is great, but do not take it (or yourself) too seriously. Regarding women in the hobby, I might have mentioned that I attended my local GW store's anniversary a few weeks back. I went for the spectable of it, as an outsider. I think a new codex dropped that weekend too, and by 11:00AM (when the store opened). The line was already a hundred people deep. The manager is a one-man show, and the line moved oh. so. slowly. Now I got there at about a quarter to, and thought that I would be in and out. Not so. So I started up conversations with the people in line with me. Not bragging, but I interact with people I don't know all of the time, and have become one of those "knows no stranger" types. I started asking people what they had come to purchase, how far they'd traveled to be there, what they like about the hobby, their rumors of new codices, tenth ed., etc. I was a bit of a curiosity to them, since I was standing in line for a game that I don't play (I did get the exclusive inquisitor, a box of sisters, and some yellow contrast paint, to the shock and horror of my wallet). The female sex was fairly well represented in the line and the store. I spoke with a nice young couple, I distinctly remember she played demons, and loved sharing all about it. The women that I talked to knew the lore and the game. They knew whay they were getting, and no one there pawed at them, fawned over them, or in general made assholes of themselves. We spent the hour or so that we were in line (!) talking about games and gaming, the state of the hobby, our ideas for fixing the rules, and a wholesome experience was had by all. I do feel badly for anyone that has had felt abused at a game store. I know that I wouldn't tolerate it, not because I am a "white knight", but because I am a father and a husband, and I expect decorum in public.
Space Wolves are “chaos lite” where you get all the benefits of being loyalist and many of the things that make chaos unique. Tau were my first army, and I just became so pissed off at “strength 5 shooting! 30 inch range!” I nearly dropped out of the hobby. But my anger made me stronger, and I just geared my tau specifically to killing space marines. The shift from 5th to 6th just made my old non updated 4th edition codex better (I could rapid fire at half range instead of at 12 and could move and shoot full distance.) by the time my 6th edition codex came out, I was adept at killing space marines and I was hyper aggressive with my tau. I didn’t care if you had 100 space marines or min squads, I didn’t care if you had transports or walked them around, I don’t care if you space marines had power corsets and lady Gaga hair, I killed them all the same and nobody got armor or cover saves against me. “Your destruction is for the Greater Good, and I am it’s instrument. Your worlds will *BURN* until their surface is but glass!”
Well Raven, I find that story quite hauntingly familiar - from the Marines' side. I got my arse handed to me several times in a row after the Farsight Enclaves were published, since Crisis suits and such were quite good at killing Marines. Sadly that lad isn't in my gaming group anymore as he moved out of town D: The other part, "anger makes you stronger", well, 5th ed Wardian GK. After eight games in a row of getting plastered, I decided to just make a force specifically designed to - well, "beat the GK" would be nice but in reality the proper term was "not get tabled by GK". A few games later the GK player agreed that having to work around 30 sternguard marines that always wounded on 2+ was a bit more dakka than he'd expected. Sure the GK won most games, but the Stersn really reaped a toll every turn I got in some shooting with them. And the non-power armoured units aside assassins + anything nnot GK? yeah, combi-melta Sterns backed by rifleman dreads was a nasty deal for anything with 4+ armour save or worse. Haven't played in a while, so far not even one 9th ed game. Maybe I'll change that soon if I get my army repainted sometime this year...
The little girl story does sound a little hyperbolic. I obviously cant say what did or didn't happen but somethings sound outside of realistic behavior.I could see someone calling the girl "a lovely young girl" while also giving off creepy vibes. And with that it could spiral into misunderstanding. If it did happen exactly as stated i would have started a campaign against that store for seemingly sitting there and enjoying it. Telling people on social media what happened. It would have been crushed by rumors, and rightfully so.
To comment on the story about the situation with the 11yr old girl, I agree that most people being male or female would have reacted more aggressively in defense to a child under thier care and protection.. especially males. And it got me thinking "why do these people feel its alright to act and be this way". And I assume its because table top games either war gaming or role playing are a escapism from reality and people play/create characters that people wish they were, weather its a selfless hero, someone with incredible wealth and appeal or the sadistic emo. So these hobby stores becomes safe places for these types as they feel they can finally express who they are with little repercussions. I'm not say this should be acceptable or tolerated more of an understanding and pity for those that do such things. Sorry for the rant :)
Whatever happened to “playing it cool” around members of the opposite sex? Admittedly I had limited (but some) success as a younger man with this tactic, got friend-zoned sometimes but it was a lot less awkward for everyone involved!
Autistic spectrum men often have damage to their left amygdala, this is literally the part of the brain that governs a person's ability to feel shame and engage in several other mentalization based cognitive functions. They literally can't help it, it is literally a form of brain damage and the fact that society keeps pushing the notion that people are all the same and they just need to learn how to control themselves only makes the situation worse because it doesn't reflect the actual underlying biology of the situation. Two people can have fundamentally divergent brain structures from one another for a host of reasons and it's only becoming more common for reasons I won't bother getting into here.
What's wrong with the Lamenter's colour scheme? It's really old school GW with those black and white check pattern. It is a bit odd seeing a BAngel successor chapter in yellow armor.
I didn't realize so many people hated Space Wolves and their players. I love Space Wolves and I am very invested in 40k lore of all chapters. I don't know if that is just a British thing or not, never really heard any talk of that here in the states. But our gaming community isn't massive around me so who knows. Seems like a silly reason to just hate a fellow games to me.
I always felt that making the Lamenters a Blood Angels successor kinda ruined the chapter ... I've never really liked the Dark Angels - I've tried, I really have - even to the point of buying a DA army, but ended up giving it away without even starting building it ... I've always liked the Space Wolves, and am considering putting an army together (although I've been a die-hard Crimson Fist since Rogue Trader), and I've never met an obnoxious SW player - all of the ones I've known have been really great guys. I cannot say I have ever met these obnoxious Space Wolf players. At least not any more than any other chapter’s fans. The most annoying one I have met is funnily enough a Grey Knight player. Anyway. All I think I am saying is that this is highly dependent of the local gaming bubble you’re a part of. As someone with a Space Wolf army, I will straight up agree that they have a lot of plot armour, more than a few dumb characters, likely including the primarch himself. I love the smaller bits of lore, aesthetics and I think “chaotically good” fits them really well.

Not people who collect Tau, just the idiots who are running a bunch of broadside barely sprayed white because they were bought half built on ebay 5 weeks ago. ive played spacewolves since 2nd because my first 40k mini was the predator annihilator and the box art look cool. and ive always wondered where the hate comes from ive done the obnoxious thing jokingly with other people acting like their faction (mainly on the internet) or the whole magnus did nothing wrong thing but i always say its jokes ive never come across the spacewolves players you talk about and I'm pretty glad by the way thousand sons are my second favourite legion but love me them superhuman werewolf Vikings in space apart from Lucas the trickster he can go join the ultrasmurfs(the most obnoxious players ive met) any way rant over hope you all meet less douches playing spacewolves.
As I said thankfully the hobby is so full of good people that even the douche space wolves are rare…but you do get them more than other factions in my experience which is odd.
I only shit on space wolfs in internet but not IRL. The wolfwolfwolf thing grinds my gears and there is so much wasted potential in them. I first thought that "Cool! Space vikings!" and all I got was a big sack of wolfwolf. I am probably more in grief than hatred.
Space wolves are like krieg, love the look and lore of them but their fanbase is *horrible* They don't read any lore and repeat the same shovel or killing commissar jokes and think they're canon, then get mad when I point out that in the siege of vraks they shot their commissars to flee from chaos forces and have never been seen in lore using a shovel as a melee weapon (though I don't doubt it's happened) Love space wolves and krieg, hate the fan bases -a cadian player

As a kid if there had of been girls in my local GW I'd have just saw them as fellow outcasts and be more excited that there was a girl into the hobby than trying to nail said hobby girl. Having had a few GFs into the hobby in my time... Any young uns looking for advice... Take it like any other girl, just this one will probably get your jokes about the hobby and probably knows more lore than you, cause she's probably read all the books rather than listened to an arch video 😂 Just talk to people like you want to be talked to... And if the girl is into you, just let it happen. Girls with slaanesh tattoos tho... They are FUN 😁 (yes I've had a GF in that category)
8th brought in so many beginners who come from a PC gaming background, are used to optimization and companies shoving out hotfixes and patches every couple of weeks and they're obsessed with what they think is balance. They don't understand how important deployment is but they bring a tournament winner list that they don't understand how to play, because "it's the best". Note that I'm not saying *all* newcomers. It's weird that I have to mention it, but some people think everyone else is generalizing... I think a lot of youtuber channels are in part to blame, like Art of War and TableTop Tactics who often play with optimized lists. Much more interesting are Winters SEO and Warzone Morloc who are more fluffy and narrative or Liam Dempsey who lately has been killing it with chat interaction on livestreams, letting donations influence games, but for FUN. It's fine to be competitive and only want to play matched games, but 40k has always been fluff first and optimized lists second.
Not to confirm your comments about Space Wolves fans but Logan kills Joros from the front (running in termy armour) after being shot at by grey knights during peace talks. Hate Space Wolves all you like but please get the lore correct. But I would confirm reading lore is worthwhile and at the end of the day it is lore, nothing to do with players so insulting other players makes no sense.
Every time the community and Northern Exile refer to women as 'female' I cringe a little. Yeah I do it too sometimes but I often catch myself and remember that woman is a far more humanizing term and should be used as much as possible in the stead of female. Refer to men as males doesn't make it better either.
