Service guide for Hobie Glide Tech Miragedrive. Also relevant to Version 2 drives (ignore the points on Glide Tech roller bearings) and will assist anyone who needs advice on how to remove/replace chains, sprockets, drums and idler pully.
This video also demonstrates what a SLH customer is paying for when we service a drive for them

A big thank you from a Barnegat Bay New Jersey kayak fisherman! This is an excellent how-to video, well narrated and filmed. I used it to guide the installation of new GT sprockets on a V2 Mirage Drive. A tip for anyone who's doing this--mark the middle tooth of each sprocket with a Sharpie to make it easier to line up with the middle chain link as you're reassembling.

I purchased the recommended 1/8” paracord from Harber Frieght. If you carefully heat the outer jacket so it shrinks and becomes more rigid you can easily thread it through the hole and pulley. Otherwise the outer sheath slides and bunches if you tried to push it. The same thing for the T handle. Don’t over heat because the jacket will melt.

Great tip with the extra bit of dowel. That must safe some headache , looked super smooth installing and keeping those rod bearings in the right place.

Thank you very much for posting this video. Simple, descriptive, with great shots. I just bought a used 2015 outback and wanted to make sure everything was redone band tuned up nicely. Worked like a charm. Gave me confidence in the event should anything happen while out water. I might figure it out and get myself out of a potentially dangerous situation. So a big Thank You from Florida!

This video is great! I bought some used hobie kayaks and wanted to start off well and asked at the local hobie service center about servicing it and they said other than cleaning it after using it and the hobie lube I should never have to worry about taking it apart. Seemed weird to me. Then I saw this video. Any thoughts on why they would say that?

Great video. Do you have a video guide for the V2 drive? Thanks

We don't, but we do have a written guide that covers the V2 drive. Look here: slhobie.com.au/info/faq/296-q-how-do-i-service-my-miragedrive

Great video, thanks. How often would you recommend this service be carried out?

That depends entirely on how much use it gets and in what kind of water. Heavy users that frequent the salt water are advised to do this once a year. But most users will likely get away with doing it every couple of years

Did Hobie ever make a bearingless drive? I took mine apart awhile back and never saw any roller bearings.
@paddlefishsail

V1 and V2 drives did not have bearings. Both can be updated to GT bearing components.

Can you put the sprocket with the bearings on a v2 drive? Where can I get a new v2 sprocket?

The red grease , what is it . I have some red wheel bearing grease and also some red Penn reel grease in a 1 lb tub. What do you use?
@paddlefishsail
@paddlefishsail 3 года назад
That is Inox MX8 grease. We also use Inox MX6 grease.

The idler cable balances the loads and helps to prevent a snapping load on the chains at each change of pedal direction.

We sell a lot of Glide Tech parts via mail order and not once had anyone contact us to tell us they were having troubles with them. They are pretty easy to contend with

I took mine apart without watching any video and had plastic bearings all over (180 drive V2). I found that if you put a good amount of grease on the bearing wall it holds them in place and makes it doable. If you have a rig like he does it is even easier but not necessary.
