Thackery wasn’t going to allow another little sister to get killed by those witches and his sacrifice is so easily overlooked when Max has to continue to save her once Thackery was down. But Dani would’ve had no chance if it weren’t for Thackery.

She screamed "Book!" At the end credits, the book's eye opens which indicates that it was successful, and the curse they used could very well work again ;-) (sequel movie!)
