CC Webster is a Hodgkin's Lymphoma Survivor. This is her story.
She was 29 when she was diagnosed with stage IV Hodgkin lymphoma, after a misdiagnosis of mono. She says she had to push for real answers after realizing something wasn’t right with her body.
Here she is sharing her memories of getting diagnosed, pushing for an appointment, and learning how to ask for help.
You can find her entire story at The Patient Story: www.thepatientstory.com/cance...

Background:
The Patient Story turns in-depth interviews from recent cancer survivors into a FAQ format-story along with timelines to give newly diagnosed patients and caregivers a sense of what their lives may look like in the upcoming months. Hear straight from the people who've already been through it.
TPS (formerly OneDavid) was started by Stephanie Chuang, a non-Hodgkin lymphoma survivor, who wants cancer patients and caregivers to get the information they need in a human way, not with medical jargon. Visit www.ThePatientStory.com for more.
If you would like to share a story, give feedback, or just say hello, we'd also love to hear from you! Please write us at support@thepatientstory.com.

A message from our founder:
My name is Stephanie.
In 2013, I found a story that touched my heart: a group of friends were fighting to raise awareness about bone marrow donations for a young woman who'd been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It had spread to her brain.
Nina was in dire need of a bone marrow transplant. She's of Asian descent, which narrowed her odds of finding a match (fewer people of the same race and ethnicity registered to donate).
The good news: she found a donor! The wife and mother of two is living happily. I couldn't be happier.
The "odd" news: I was diagnosed with the same cancer, same sub-type just three years later.
That motivated me to create The Patient Story: a company to help cancer patients and caregivers by giving them real answers from real people - people who've actually been through the experience.

I am a nursing student & I appreciate you sharing your story. A textbook could never explain the way a person actually going through it could. You are so brave 🩵

It has been a living Hell ! I wanted to give up on life 5 times! I’m 65 going on 102 ! Totally unrecognizable by all accounts! Some days are good and some absolutely unbearable! My care team (VA Seattle) , I give them A+++++ !! Top notch in their fields! They’re sending me home for two weeks to recover.

You mentioned luck ! That’s exactly how I describe my path ! Sheer luck that everything fell into places. From my initial visit to the ER to being admitted 30 days later to the VA Oncology care team!

This is scary to me. It’s bad enough it takes months to get an appt for a regular doctor’s appt but to have to just go find your own cancer doctor by making millions of calls is ridiculous. Her primary doctor couldn’t get her a referral to an oncologist?? According to her, she was left high and dry. Unreal and in America. We’re supposed to be the best of the best. Smh.

I feel your emotions! Two months ago, I thought I had a hernia (self diagnosed), then I thought I had IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) again self diagnosed. But I noticed I started to lose weight and muscle mass very rapidly. I play tennis 7 days a week, a martial artist and gymnast so I thought this was nothing to be concerned about. But on Thanksgiving day of this year, I felt so miserable that I admitted myself to the Emergency Room at a local hospital! That was the beginning of my journey to Non-Hodgkins Aggressive Lymphoma. It’s now December 14, I’m here at the VA Medical Center in Seattle. I completed my first round of chemotherapy treatments three days ago. There are five rounds of treatments consisting of a 5 day 24 hours a day chemotherapy. After the treatments, they send me home for two weeks to recover. Then I come back to the hospital for another 5 days 24 hours a day session. Then I get sent home again for two weeks. I do this until all five sessions are done. So we’re looking at 4-5 months of chemotherapy!
