Hoey vs Wallace: Small Studio Challenge : Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Recently Mark Wallace challenged Gavin Hoey to photograph the same model with the same lighting gear, in the same location as he did. Using just a single speedlight and a small softbox, Gavin set out to create a shot with plenty of contrast and drama. An old book and some powder were added as props and after a bit of experimentation with the light and a little tweak in Photoshop, the challenge was completed.

Great job both, you should make it an annual event! Two good photos but this proves that adding that extra element makes all the difference. I like that most of the work was done "in camera" with just a small amount of post processing and easily achievable, excellent!

Both photographers are super good teachers. Rather than competing/comparing images, instead make a vid where both photographers work together to create an awesome shot for advertisers n etc. Happy new year guys.

Hi Gavin. Always love to see your video's on different subjects on the adorama tv channel. I have a question about the Flashpoint zoom Li-on Manual on Camera Flash. Do you know it this setup also would work in combination with a sony system like an a6000 or an a7 mark ii? Love to hear from you if you have tested this on any sony system, although you have been operating it on an olympus. Don't know if the olympus camera's have an universal hot shoe like the sony camera's have.

+Carl van der Feer The Flashpoint Li-Ion Speedlight will work on any camera with a standard hotshoe. Modern Sony bodies will be fine (a few older ones had a Minolta fit hotshoe and needed an adapter) and I've had photographers along to my workshops with pretty much every camera make (inc Sony) and got on fine. You won't TTL on a Sony (or Olympus) with this flash.

very inspirational and educational! you guys should create an 'iron chef'-like show for photographers (call it 'iron photographer?' lol). where challengers can compete with the 'masters' with project concept/objective, time and equipment constraints, etc....and of course, the secret ingredient haha
