@@mohdshariq5814: A tunnel kiln is a long tunnel, between 100 and 200 metres long, made out of brick, steel and fire resistant materials. Rails run through the tunnel, and the bricks are put through the tunnel on fire proofed trolleys, similar to the trolleys that were shown for the handling of the 'green' bricks. The benefit of the tunnel kiln is that it reduces the handling of the bricks. In one operation that has been observed by myself, the bricks are stacked onto the trolleys straight from the cutting section, and placed on the end of the run for the tunnel kiln. As the trolleys take up to 2 weeks to travel the full length of the kiln, this gives the bricks a good chance to dry out before getting too hot. If clay bricks are exposed to heat before they have dried out when they are still green, the moisture turns to steam, expanding and explodes the bricks, which then causes a collapse in the tunnel, which means that the kiln has to be shut down and left for 2 weeks to cool down before people can enter to remove the blockage. It then takes another week for the kiln to get back up to operating temperature.

Notice that most of the heavy lifting (hand stacking the wet bricks) is being done by women while men operate the machines. Hard work for everyone, but stacking those bricks would be a backbreaker!

Not exactly true. To my knowledge, there are 5 main types of bricks. Perforated are what is shown in the video, and are generally used for wall construction. The perforations allow the mortar to grip on the flat face of the brick, allowing a better hold in the wall. The other 4 bricks are all solids. Sandstocks are a soft brick which has been lightly fired. They generally have a texture in the face and are made with an indent (frog) on one flat. Sometimes the name of the company is stamped into the frog. This brick was a common face brick in housing due to the texture on the face. These bricks are also recycled from demolition sites and can be used for walkway and patio paving. Not recommended for driveways. Wire Cuts are solid bricks that have come out of the extruder and just been cut into their respective size. They are a normal brick shape and can be used for inside, common, face and paving. Can be used for light traffic driveways. Hard burnt bricks are left in the kiln a bit longer, and generally have a frog in one flat. These are an all purpose brick and are suitable for pretty much any situation - except for heavy vehicle driveways. Shale bricks are partly made of shale, thus the name. To look at a shale brick, they do look crumbly, but they are the strongest and heaviest brick. These are a pressed brick, and are well fired. These bricks are suitable for all uses, including heavy vehicle driveways. One yard had these bricks laid and were subject to one truck consistently going out with 12 tonne + axle loads. None of the bricks cracked in the 5 years spent at the yard.

Bangladesh bricks make these look like western standard. These are quite high quality compared to many asian countries with solid bricks often hand pressed where one in every six is missing a corner.
