Hog Plum is not hard to grow. You simply need to understand its specific growing requirements. One thing you will need for sure, is hot night temperatures for this tree to grow. If you have the yellow variety ( Spondias Mombin ), these growing tips are the same for both red and yellow.
Hog Plum - Jocote Red or Yellow Growing Tips
Best time to plant: Anytime night temperatures are at least 50F and expected to rise in the next month or so. This is going to be mid to late spring for most people.
Sun: Full sun anywhere in the U.S. It doesn't grow well in the shade.
Winter: Frost sensitive, protect from cold wind and frost. Cold hardy to low 20F's (Mature trees). Young trees may take damage sooner.
Root system: Roots grow straight down several feet. Tap root.
Growth structure: This is naturally a shrub. It can grow up to 15-20ft. Tall in ideal conditions and short in not so ideal conditions.
Fruiting: This tree flowers in the spring and fruits ripen sometime in the spring. Those grown from seed tend to take a few years before setting flowers. Ours are grown from cuttings so they fruit same year. Trees in pots don't hold fruit as well as those rooted in ground.
Watering: Shallow water first season in ground. As the tree gets older, deep water. Do let soil dry somewhat in between watering. This is a semi-deciduous tree, once all leaves have fallen in the winter, don't water until new growth shows up in the spring.
Fertilization: In containers, any slow release fertilizer will work. In ground, compost and mulch is all you will ever need. No special fertilizers needed.
Container Grown: Due to its root system, this plant doesn't grow well in a container long term. We recommend you to plant in the ground rather than growing it in a container.
Personal Growing Tip: Once you plant this tree in ground, no top growth is normal until the tree roots in ground. The rooting process can take 1 year+ depending on your local night temperatures. Hot=It Grows faster, Cold=It grows slower. Patreon: patreon.com/QCTropicals (Exclusive perks!)

Hi! We live in Tampico, on the Mexican Gulf Coast. I planted about 50 hog plum seeds and one, just one, sprouted. The tree has seen some drama what with a fire ant invasion, a cold snap, and what I think was some animal urinating in its pot. Last May we planted it and the tree is now six feet-tall, and kind of spindly-looking as all of the lower leaves and branches fell off during the winter. As the weather heats up, there are new branches and leaves popping out at the top. Looking good!

You need a cutting from the actual tree. They do not grow from the seeds.

I'm not too far away ... in Tempe. How large a tree does this tree become in this area? I see pictures of it online and it seems like it could become massive (but maybe not in our climate). How fast a grower is it? How small do you think it could it be kept via pruning? Do both the red and yellow have the same growth characteristics? My yard is not huge (7500 sq ft) and either water or sewer run through the middle of the front and back yard ... so that is one reason why I ask. It seems like it is probably a good idea to plant it away from foundations and water lines.

To be honest, i have yet to see a big tree here in AZ. You can keep them pruned but the girth of the trunk may get big so keep away from block walls.

Good morning. Very informative video, first video that takes the time to explain all about a fruit tree. I'm in Central West Florida. I have been trying to get someone to donate a few cuttings from the Spanish Red Plum, Jocote, Ciruela. Would you be kind enough to donate a few cuttings to a Disable Army Veteran or maybe you know a friend that would be willing to do this, Here in Florida folks that have this fruit trees are not very cooperative in donating a few cuttings, I grew up with this fruit tree but in the last 50 years been trying to find one with no luck, would you be willing to do this, keep those nice videos coming. Thank you for your service.

Hi, I live in Southern California, I brought a cutting from Guatemala several years ago. I planted it and it grew into a small tree. The tree is now about 8 feet wide by 6 feet tall. Last year and this year I had some flowers, very few, but it dropped them and I didn't get any fruit. What do you think I might be doing wrong? Btw, this is a great video. I love all the information you provide in it. Thanks for it!

A few reasons I can think of. Not enough water and tree simply drops its flowers to preserve water or it's in too much shade. Which one do you think is it?

Hi, we’ve had a jocote tree for about 10 years in south Florida. In the last 3 years it stopped producing fruit. We get green leaves and then it sheds around March but we get no fruit. Is there is anything we can do?
@qctropicals

so your tree defoliates in the middle of summer? Something is going on with your root system. Either physical or chemical damage.
