Geoff (Jeff) also has a personal channel where he does "solo" work, updating and re-imagining old classic songs while staying true to their roots. Big Bad John is his latest, and just spectacular. He arranged Hoist the Colors. You commented on their modern sound - you'll find that both in Geoff's arrangements and in Layne's. Layne is the beatbox, and they each do about 50% of the performances, which means, EVERYTHING. Rough vocal edit, video & editing, the whole thing. In the last year Eli, the tenor with the goatee, has taken on more of the visual aspects. He did lighting here. You might be interested in The Dragonborn Comes (spectacular low notes from Geoff) or the Halo theme - Halo is very different, absolutely mesmerizing. Their most recent, "We Don't Talk About Bruno" takes them back to the other side of the group persona - comedy. When you get around to watching that one, watch closely. Take your eyes off the screen and you'll miss the little gags that are laced through-out. Have fun, and look forward to watching more of your reactions.

The song is from Pirates of the Caribbean: At Wordl's end. VoicePlay have taken a simple song and made it their own. It's what they do The bass is Geoff Castellucci and taking you into the basement is what he does. Though he has a range of 5 octaves so can also take you into the attic at times. VoicePlay are known as the theatre kids of acapaella. Eli (pronounced as ellie) used to sing with rock bands and is a master of riffs and runs. Enjoy!

As was mentioned, Voiceplay was on the same season as Home Free, but they didn't do all that well on the sing off for a variety of reasons. They have improved leaps and bounds since that time as you could see here. Pretty much everything they have done for the last 7 months, like this song, is on another level.

Yeah, pirates are dope, but watch their "My Mother Told Me" and you'll want to be a Viking and watch their "Warriors" and you'll want to be a post-apocalyptic civilian fighter and watch their 'Oogie Boogie's Song" and you'll want to be an evil minion of Jack Skellington who has kidnapped Santa Claus (aka Sandy Claws). They were at a disadvantage back when they did the Sing off (which is quite a few years ago now) because Geoff (long-haired bass, it's pronounced "Jeff", not "Gee-off") was not as awesome as he is now (basses just get better with age, just a fact of life with how the vocal cords age), and they were organized as a five guys group and had to be compete as a group of six and add a woman to a group, it just wasn't the best mix for them.

Geoff is the bass. But Layne, the beatboxer, has a similar range, and Eli (rhymes with jelly) covers the bass when Geoff is singing. Eli, the bald guy, toured with a rock band for some time, but he can mellow it out beautifully. He has such a versatile voice. Harmonizing and seamless transitions in medleys are their specialities. Their arrangements, and video work, have gone off the charts since the pandemic. You might want to check out Geoff’s channel. He does a great cover of Misty Mountains, the dwarves song from The Hobbit. And definitely check out their Dragonborn cover as well as their other gaming themes: HALO, Warriors, My Mother Told Me

There's a song "Zombies vs. Hillbillies" where Voiceplay and Home Free collaborate - great for a reaction. They were on the same season of "The Sing Off". Home Free won that season, but Voiceplay has worked hard and really found their footing. They have had a couple lineup changes since they were on the show and only 3 of the people in this video were on the show. I also recommend "Just sing" (must leave the captions on to see who everyone is), a fundraiser song they did with a ton of former Voiceplay members, family and friends and one guest you will especially recognize. This group is more like musical theater than Home Free or Pentatonix. You'll see a lot of elaborate costumes and sets. Sometimes they're Vikings. Sometimes they're Disney characters. Sometimes Ghouls and zombies.

Home Free and Voiceplay play off of one another fairly often. They swap ideas and Geoff (base) has helped produce a couple of Home Frees cuts. It's a fairly small community and they all know one another. Avi (formally of Pentatonix) sang with Home Free on some songs (Ring of Fire). Geoff has a crazy range and has produced a few sets singing multiple parts (Headless Horseman). New rabbit holes all over the place.

The 3 deepest basses from the sing off are Avi from PTX,Tim Foust from Home Free and Geoff Castellucci from Voiceplay. Tim Foust is the one who trained this bass singer to go lower than he had before. His name is Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci and he has several solo videos, usually Geoff-times-4 (see Monster Mash, House of the Rising Sun, Sixteen Tons, and his latest from just a few days ago Big Bad John). The bald guy is Eli, pronounced like Ellie. The guy in the center is a guest singer, Jose Rosario Jr. He also guested in the first video I saw of theirs, My Mother Told Me. The one with the blind eye is their newest, Cesar De La Rosa. His first number he did with them as a regular member of the group was If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, with guest singer Ashley Diane. They've undergone a lot of cast changes so you'll see a lot of different faces in their videos. If you watch their Halo Theme be sure to include the message at the end of the song. That's Scott Porter from Friday Night Lights, one of VoicePlay's founding members with an important message. Follow with Boy Bands in 5 Minutes to see who he was talking about.

While Tim did teach Geoff the growl technique, Geoff credits David Larson for helping him deepen his voice. Geoff primarily uses subharmonics to go deep deep deep. VoicePlay is considered the theatrical acapella group. Sing-Off was on TV and that was the venue they competed in. One of VoicePlay's songs they did is Road Trip. Of course that was several years ago. The guys were in the chorus in middle school, started a group called 4:2:5. Geoff started off as a tenor then baritone and bass. He says he isn't a bass but you couldn't prove by MY ears. He practices both ends of his range which as of now is B0 on the bottom and A5 on the top - short a note of 6 octaves. He has a beautiful bass voice - smooth as butter or as one listener said, caramel. I place him first because of the quality on both ends with Tim Foust of Home Free a close second followed by Avi. These men are all singularly superb more shading than anything else. VoicePlay is my favorite, the complete package with innovative arranging, creative staging, costuming, etc. Pentatonix are probably next with several songs that were top of my list - Hallelujah, Mary Did You Know, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Home Free next but I love the Survivors video done by VoicePlay vs Home Free (Zombies vs Hillbillies).

There's a quote I saw somewhere that if a cappella were a high school, Pentatonix would be the student council, VoicePlay would be the theater geeks, and Home Free would be the rowdy boys throwing a kegger in the parking lot. Pretty accurate description.

Yeah, so both Avi and Geoff can currently go as low as they can due to advice from Tim (all because of that Sing-Off connection, although the acapella community is very tight even without the Sing-Off). Obviously, it's not all because of Tim as all 3 are insanely talented and skilled. Tim and Geoff pretty much have the same range (around 5 octaves, which is around the range of Mariah Carey), they just use different main techniques for their low sound. Avi has around a 4+ octave range (same with Adam Chance from Home Free, although I believe Avi's range is a bit better). Another great bass is Elliot Robinson who is currently with Axiom Vocal. He was actually the bass for Home Free before Tim (there was a time when they were both on Home Free together, but I believe Tim was only part-time, then). Elliot actually has the best full low range (chest voice) out of all of these incredible bass singers. Home Free, VoicePlay, and PTX all have amazing beatboxers (or vocal percussionists, if you prefer), which, along with their amazing basses, are the (main) reason these acapella groups are so well-loved (and why they groove so much). They each have their own flavor and style. I'm also really glad that y'all seemed to be enjoying Eli's (bald dude, pronounced as "Ellie") voice so much. He's my favorite pure voice in the group. VoicePlay has had a lot of turnover in the past several years, so when you see older videos of theirs, you will see different lineups. The 3 you will always see, though, are Geoff (bass, original member from 1997 [yes, they've been together that long]), Layne (beatboxer, other original member [originally their baritone, then became the beatboxer when their original beatboxer left]), and Eli (bald dude with the great voice). The dude with the sword is a guest vocalist (Jose Rosario, also in their "My Mother Told Me" video). The last one that I haven't mentioned yet, is their newest member Cesar De La Rosa (I may have spelled that wrong). Throughout their other videos, you will see 3 other main members who have since left the group. I'm sure you'll learn more about them as you react to more of their videos. They're also the group that collaborates most with guest artists.

Haven’t read the comments so apologies if this is redundant. Layne is the beat boxer and is one of the best in the biz- He and Geoff (the bass) do all their own arrangements, lighting usually done by tenor Eli and Geoff..they do almost everything themselves. SO creative. A Capella is an extra amazing genre IMO because there’s no room for error, no place to hide…all the a capella groups are filled with vocal monsters as a result. Level of talent is just insane. And most of VP members have an average range of 4-5 octaves- they usually can fill for whoever’s got the solo at the time🥰

Geoff's not the lowest bass. He does do vocal fries & has a large vocal range. As other commenters stated he has his own channel. He, Lani & Eli (founders) have years performing & both Lani & Geoff arranging too. WRONG about Sing-Off. Similar to AGT & the voice, it was not live. The judge's based the decision on their expertise & knowledge. The show was taped in the summer to play in winter holiday season similar to the Bachelor. Biggest issue that could make/break was selection of songs. My opinion, that's how Voice Play placed low and they added a female voice "I" think to be more like Pentanoix. Resulted in harmonies weren't as tight. Pentatonix competed the YEAR before and won. Confusing some, they came back the following year to perform at the finals. Home Free, Voice Play, Fhilharmonic ALL competed together 2013! Home Free 1st, Ten 2nd, Vocal Rush 3rd, Fhilharmonic 4th, AcoUstiKats 5th, Voice Play 6th, Element 7th, Street Corner Renaissance (Adam Chance's former group), Calle Sol 8th Princeton Footnotes 8th.

Geoff Castellucci & Tim Foust both have 6 Octave range voices which is extremely rare in Men & found mostly in some bass singers. Homefree beat Voiceplay in Season4 Sing-off. Homefree won & Voiceplay came 6th in 2013.

Voice Play are the most theatrical acapella group like 99% more than Home Free or Pentatonix. Voice Play are known as The Theater Kids. Either Geoff ( Jeff ) low bass singer or Layne the beat boxer do all the arrangements & they do their own production's. Eli the high tenor does the lighting. Geoff's wife Kathy is their production manager.

Tim used to be lower. I'm not sure now. They have similar ranges, but use different techniques. Both are cool and they are friends. Pentatonix was on the season of the Sing Off before Home Free. Voice Play and Home Free competed on the same season, which Home Free won. I enjoy HF more, but that is just taste. I watch both... a lot. Lol.

Voiceplay was on Season 4 of The Sing Off, they lost to out to a few groups. The Season 4 winner is Home Free. Featuring another solid Bass Tim Foust. Pentatonix was the season 3 winner. There were some amazing groups on the show, and a fun journey down the rabbit hole shall y'all investigate.

I think Geoff and Tim Foust from Home Free can hit about the same notes, but I think Tim Foust can go higher, too.
