That’s so cool! I’ve seen those type of rail cars before in the Manassas rail yard, those rail cars are very rare to see.

WOW Rowan! That was a great video! I found the video very interesting. Thank you for finding out that the removal of the switch parts from the special car that they were on. Watching the two Norfolk Southern employees bolting the piece of the switch together was fascinating. I hope that you are able to watch the actual installation of the switch so we can see where it is supposed to be placed. Thank you for sharing this video with us

I really enjoyed this content! So much to appreciate that was taken for granted out there on the roads & tracks. So proud of the hard working men as well. The equipment look like it was fairly new. That is good at least you know the heater works😂🙋🏾‍♀️

I was really impressed by the crane crew. They have obviously worked together quite a bit and knew what they were doing. And the crane operator made squeezing the second section of switch between the railcar and his crane look easy.

Thanks for the video. Wow, realized about half way through the video that I remember that at-grade crossing from the 1970s when our family would occasionally drive from Vienna Va west out to Skyline drive and other things in this area! We typically thought the at-grade crossing was probably seldom used back then by trains. Many railroad lines that looked like it did were all but abandon. Its something to see the large (huge) investment of routing all the roads with flyovers bridges above the RR. There looks like there is already graffiti on the retaining walls, in a little town like that. Seems like people would look after things better. There is a lot of curvature on that RR route to lengthen out the high gradient to Front Royal with little apparent local use. It's nice to see it getting some serious attention.

And I assume at the time that you took these trips that I-66 maybe had not been completed yet! 55 was the best and closest to the tracks route... 20 freights per day, usually large in length too! The Bridge project came after upgrades to Norfolk Southern b line, the trains were causing more problems!

First off,MERRY 🎄 CHRISTMAS,AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Second,awesome video,and you got a sight not often seen! That Grove crane( if I read it right),was a 150 ton capacity,and those rail sections were probably 130# weights,so the capacity was about right! You now have a reason to put some Atlas snap track on a home built flat car,as no manufacturer has something like that available! Interesting kit bashing,and very different! Thank you for going out of your way,to get an obscure,and unusual railroad vignette! Rowan,bless you for your curiosity,and itchy nose,thank you! The plates used to join the rails are called 'fish plates'. They're also designed that when bolted the rails will line up to each other properly. I'm already subscribed and hit the 'All' on the bell. I've always been a fan of trains and railroads. I also have antique railroad things. One is a 1940's conductor's lantern that uses kerosene to light up.

Switch Panels are made in Roanoke and loaded on the panel cars.

Very interesting. I guess they are sent the location measurements and other specifics, and the assemblies are custom fabricate. Noted the white stripe hoist attach points on the rails at the proper balance location; those top four spikes must carry a significant load - no danger of pulling out?

Cool video. Once they actually replace the switch, they’ll take those joint bars off and weld the two pieces together, joint bars are just temporary until they get it in the spot they’re actually installing it.

That's angle bar's , track bolt's , lock washer's and nut's . The switch panel's are built on a jig and then unbolted to be transported . You can find RU-vid videos of switches such as this one being replaced .

It's a relatively heavy segment, each tie, at a normal length, ways roughly around 200+lbs... These are not normal lengths plus extra frog rail attachments so yes this is heavy!!
