HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5: Better than Version 4? 

The upper will for sure continue to give more than SG4. My SG4 (every pair) has stayed the same feeling until the midsole was just “tired” after hundreds of miles. I’ll have to hit you up when we go visit my wife’s family for some trial runs out there. We go at least twice a year to her home near Zurich.

The stretchy upper is a big step back for the 5. I don't think it's good for technical alpine terrain. The 4 is my choice for such terrain

@@alexanderfessler7491 can totally see it for technical terrain. Most of my trails aren’t not like Pedro’s mountain trails. More like his trails around Zurich is what I get but much more dry in California.

I absolutely loved my SG4! They will be my muddy day go to trails to keep the 5 cleaner from mud. Let me know how you like them

@@thepacepusher You could always just clean the shoe.

Some shoes just feel “heavy” or like they don’t allow you to get through your foot strike efficiently. A “lively” shoe makes this efficiency easy, smooth, and have a “lighter” feel to them.

Just bought a pair of the 4’s for $72!

Same boat. Everyone praises these shoes, but I can't join the party; just too damn narrow / shallow even in a wide. I just get too much pinky toe rub.

I have to wear a men's wide (in 4's) and they are still just a bit narrow at my fifth met head and pinky toe. I'd love to know how the 5 compares with regard to width.

Totally see the wider forefoot would be tough in these. Fortunate for me no issue. No toenail damage and 2 Grand Canyon crossings in them is 🤙🏼

I have wide feet too,sg4 wide gave me much better experience than my sg3,I'd highly recommend sg4 wide to anyone with wide feet,too bad sg5 don't offers wide version. ,.😓

@@hxxxxwxxx That is interesting to me....Did you find the uppers tight and constricting...I guess not. Altras do offer wide and very wide

@@roustabout4fun I found the upper of the SG3 and SG4 are good and hold in shapes miles after miles,but the SG3 midsole losses their bounce factors (cushioning) much quicker than the SG4,on the other hand,Mafate evo were good choice if you could suffer the first 60km to break in the midsole. I certainly tried Altra,had two pairs of Olympus,2 and 2.5 I think,very comfy and bouncy,but the upper of them two splits prematurely,so disappointed. For max cushioning trail shoe,I prefer Hoka to Altra,Hoka are more agile,responsive and lightweight that makes you run faster,as for Altra, they're heavier,more stable and comfy, sometimes clumsy... It's easy to make the choice of training and racing.

@@user-pp5or5og4k Agreed about the 4's 100% felt like prison wear however the 5....I went down 1/2 and went with Wide size---For me the 2 and the 5....wide are about the same fit~ Have you tried the Sense 4...not as much cushion but great scatters (tec running here in WA)

No. I fortunately don’t need wide so I was able to get the first release of them not needing the wide

Better midsole which reduced weight. A lot of people didn’t like the 4s as much either

The width felt the same to me in both and sizing was the same for me. I know there was a wide in the 4 but unsure if the 5 has released a wide yet

@@thepacepusher thanks. Wides are available thru Hoka. I'd heard Bondi8 was now more narrow, so I have some concerns. Just learned of a NB that's cushioned and wide so may check that out.

That could be a scale problem, moisture or something in the shoe. That is really strange though for sure since the gap is so big!

If you have the extra $40…its worth it to me. The toe box and improved midsole are worth every penny

Same question for me, but SG4 is $90 now, so a $65 difference. I prefer a little firmer, lower ride, but need something to handle seriously technical ascents and descents.

Seems to be a theme for a lot of people from what I’m hearing. Fortunate not to need that wider shoe option

It's a head scratcher. At this point Hoka has virtually no Speedgoat (4&5) wide options to purchase, leaving me looking at other brands as my current SG4Ws are falling apart.

@@thepacepusher I talked to a local shop in Canada and they weren't optimistic about a wide option coming anytime soon due to production line scarcity (prioritizing standard width production over wides) - picked up the 5's as my first Hoka and coming from Altra shoes the toe box is definitely narrow (worried about my pinky toe as well!) - if they don't work out after a few runs will definitely be waiting on the wide version to drop

@@yanman53 yeah coming from altra there will never be a more roomy toe box. They have designed a great one for foot spreading at the toes. Keep us posted on that picky toe especially coming from altra. Will be interesting.
