What do I really think of the HOKA Speedgoat 5 after running around 500K (300 Miles) in mixed terrains? I've used this shoe for the last two and a half months while training for a 50K Ultra-Marathon - and I wore this shoe during my Ultra. Stay tuned to find out!
What is your experience with this shoe?
What is your favorite shoe for trail running generally? I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Thanks for the honest review. I've worn multiple pairs of the Speedgoat 3 and 4 and I absolutely loved the 5 for the first week. Lighter, comfortable step-in feel, and feels more "runnable" than previous iterations. But that all changed once I hit the mountains. The upper is way too stretchy and no matter how tightly I laced my pair (I don't have narrow feet at all), my foot could not get locked down. It resulted in a very unstable experience on technical mountain trails. Also, the heel collar comes up too high on my ankle bones and caused really painful rubbing and pressure. This shoe is no longer a mountain shoe, it could be used as a hybrid trail/road shoe, but to me Hoka already has other models that fill that need. It's a miss for me. Trying to stock up on some Speedgoat 4's before they're all gone.

I totally agree with all your points. The shoe even felt unsafe on technical terrain. The upper IS really stretchy. The shoe is really great for easier trails and gravel roads on the mountains. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with them!!

What other shoes from hoka would you recommend for hybrid road/trail ? @mokefish

I had the SG3 and it was an awesome shoe. For the version 4 I heard some critiques and seems in this new version they fixed some of those things. Interesting shoe no doubt and it´s on my list to get towards the end of the year. My go-to in the past years have been Salomon Sense ride while alternate with Torrent 2. Nice to find a new channel. Hope people get to notice you more. Cheers from Hong Kong,

Hey thanks for the comment! Must have missed it. Anyway I also liked the sense ride 3 a lot. I might try the Speedgoat 5 Wide version next. That might solve my stability issue with them. But looking forward to getting another Salomon shoe again :)

@@chris.schmied I love the Sense Ride saga. Also currently using Ultra Glide

If this has too much stack height for you, you might love the torrents?! They are my all-time favourite shoes. The toebox is pretty roomy, so you can easily add an insole for added cushioning.

Thanks for the great review - I used Salomon trail running shoes for a while and they didn‘t have a lot of cushioning - so maybe I get a new pair of Hokas now :)

Yes! Salomon trail shoes generally dont have a lot of cushioning. But they have a very good fit and are better for technical trails.

Btw, have you considered resoling shoes? Some people have them resoled with a vibram zegama before they even break them in. Resoling can be a diy project for people with a belt sander (

You might also want to checkout Saucony Xodus Ultra for the next one if you have not already. Xodus Ultra has PWRRUN PB (PEBA) foam (like in Endorphon Speed/Pro) encased in PWRRUN shell.

Sounds like a good shoe! I’ll def. keep an eye out on them. So many great shoes in the market! Thanks :))

Interesting that you found them unstable on tech terrain, I use them in the Alps including UTMB and Swiss Peaks courses. I find them very stable, I have the wide fit so maybe that makes a difference.

Yes I heard that would make a difference. ( picking the wide option) Will def give them a try on my next pair of Speedgoats ;)

I’m torn between these and Salomon ultra glides, I run on the roads in Hoka Mach 5s and love them and tried the Clifton 8s and just couldn’t get a lock down on my heel in those and wondered is the speedgoat 5s like the Mach 5 or Clifton 8 or would you say it’s different altogether? Great video tho man keep it up, subscribed 👍🏻

I never tried the Mach 5 or Clifons, so i couldnt tell you. But between the Speedgoat and ultra glide I’d say it really depends on the terrain you want to use them in. The stability is a bit better on the Salomon for technical terrain. (Running on high alpine trails) If you don’t run those kind of trails then def. go for the Speedgoat. More bounce and fun to run in :) I’m thinking of getting another pair of the Speedgoat. Hope this helps!

Prob not ideal hiking shoe cos of the foam used on sole. Mine is cut by jagged edge of big rocks and I'm not even on steep inclines. I find the best soles are Asicsgrip and I loved my Fuji Lites they're as cushy but tons more stable on slippery terrain. I heard that inov8 graphene soles are phenomenal - maybe if they improved on their cushioning for comfort I'll snag a pair.

Thanks Chris. Have you tried the wide version yet? I’m 6’3” with a very wide foot and the wides have been great so far in muddy / root terrain in Kentucky USA. Just wondering if the wides would help better to avoid the roll.

Hey Brandon !! No i havent tried the wide version. But that would probably solve my problem w the shoe , since my foot is somewhat wide. I'll def. try it on my next Hoka trail shoe. Thanks for commenting :))
