We know the Speedgoat is a firm trail shoe fave and with the Speedgoat 5, Hoka is ringing the changes for the latest iteration of its popular shoe.
It's lighter, has a reworked upper and Hoka has tweaked things in the outsole department to up its gripping credentials.
Testers Mike, Nick and Kieran have been putting the new Speedgoat 5 to the test across a range of off-road distances to see if the Goat is still the one of the trail shoe goats.

Did you say 70 marathons in 70 days?! Wow, I’ll take a pair of those. Awesome effort

The upper is definite more comfortable and breathable than the 4. However, the new heel implantation on the 5 is a nightmare. For every run, I need to re-lace and pull hard on the lace to get a proper lock down. The 4 has a more noticeable rocker geometry and offers better foot protection from the trail. The 5 feel flat and lower down to the ground because Hoka has swapped out for a thinner insole. I do not favour the minor update on its outsole. It feels as if the speedgoat has lost some of its bite.

Thanks for the review. I would love to love the SG5 but the ankle collar is so high that when the terrain becomes steep, off-camber or very technical, it eats my malleolus. The discomfort is so important that I cannot use them for the long mountainous runs I was foreseeing. But if these fit your feet I am convinced they are fantastic to run.

Same issue. On heavily off cancer stuff, it is painful. For everything else I love it.

Similar ankle issues at first but now after about 30 miles in the shoe I don’t notice it anymore

I have the same problem with my SG5. I have to tight the lances quite tight to prevent it bump into my malleolus. But because the lances are tight, the top of foot gets eaten up by the lances. I only use them for my 20km trail runs. For longer runs, I would wear my trusty SG4 as the ankle collar is lower and the upper is better at preventing water/rocks getting into the shoe.

Darn good shoe and works as well as a Swiss Army Knife. A Fine shoe that has been improved.

Shoe has almost no padding in the tongue. Also, the sole is very frail and designed to break and fray. A truly wonderful design with planned obsolescence.

Thanks for this review, very useful! Would this be a good shoe if your typical running route is 50-50 road and trail?

Did any of you suffer heel slippage. I got mine today but the heel slips unless I heel lock that I don’t particularly like as it seems to add more pressure on the top of my foot.

As a classic Salomon firm ride for technical terrain i've never been a fan of Mushy Hokas. Too soft for my liking and that plain EVA midsole packs up way too quickly....
@bikeinmotion
@bikeinmotion 2 года назад
I've ran over 800km in both the EVO Mafate 1 as well as the EVO Speedgoat. The S/Lab Ultra 1 I had to throw away after 550km (and lots of hills) because it was just a a hard brick and my knees started to hurt ... And the Hokas might be soft but they are also springy...

@@bikeinmotion To be fair the S/Lab Ultra 1 was the worst Salomon shoe ever made IMHO.

Yes a very good shoe, but for me to be a avoided if running routes have contoured landscape and your running on a slant.

From those that have this any input on how well the SG5 drains water. I would be using on on Spartan OCR races and there will be water to go though.

I twisted my ankle badly with speedgoat 4. It's lacking in stability in super technical terrain like on uneven rocky surfaces. I wonder about the speedgoat 5. Is the stability better?
@joneaton3366

Answer is no. You better on buying torrent or zinal

@ryanmohan3041

Also, "not twisting your ankle" is far more dependent on the environment and mainly your proprioceptive skills than the shoe. If you blame a shoe for twisting your ankle, you'll never find a shoe that does the job for you

IF HOKA could offer a GORE-TEX version of htis shoe....and "winter tire tread".....as there are runners who run during the winter months ...or through the wet...as well..

Th SG4 Goretex was a little disappointing. Heavier, upper felt very inflexible.

So disappointed with this shoe. It gives zero grip on surfaces that are even slightly wet or sandy. If you running on technical trails like me, please avoid the speedgoat 5.

Woah woah woah🤣 There are 3 people in this video, 2 of them cannot run at all. So that means the guy running a marathon a day "for like two months" did it at what, 10 min/km? 🤣 NO chance of it being any other way. It is no achievement to walk a marathon every day. Kids walk to school faster in Africa! You asked about my achievements? Ok, I am an international mountain marathon winner! Fact! I won a tough race 44 km with 2700 m elevation gain against pros. I weighed 235 lbs in 2011, never ran in my life until then and was a chain smoker. I also had 9 surgeries from 2011 to 2016 from fractures from crashes, nearly lost an arm and almost ended up handicapped. Still, I ran 112 mountain half-marathons in 2016 with an average elevation gain of 700+ m and an average pace of under 4:30 min/km. Good enough? I finished among top 5 in any race I ever attended. I was running in Hokas (Clifton 1) in 2013, when you and these "reviewers" haven't even heard of Hoka!😁What else do you want to hear? At 42 years of age my 5k PB is currently 16:50 in trail shoes (Torrent). Is that OK for you? "Mr. Bump" with no subscribers, who only came here to defend the clueless, useless clowns trying to get views and audience with something they are useless at and have subpar skills in. Give me a break. My running form is excellent btw. Bye now, hope you got your answers here. I can provide more info about myself if needed or about the lack of skill shown in this video with regards to form and running technique. 2 guys in this video cannot run a sub 90 half. Nowhere near, sorry if the truth hurts you
