It existed from 1968 until 1994. Even I had forgotten where I entered it. Hopefully this gives you a clearer picture of it.

So many memories of the hole in the road - my fondest one is the bus information office with a carousel of model Sheffield buses - I always wanted one of the buses but they weren’t for sale!

I remember their were plate glass windows and entrances for the department stores that were above ground. That part of Sheffield city centre is a mess. Going to Sheffield was a treat, to go shopping and watch United in the days of Woodward, Currie and Colquhoun

The whole in the road may have been modern but it was so classy.

As I young man I knew and still know everywhere in Sheffield... fortunately I now live abroad and will never return to see my city, now I'm retired and remember all the entrances and exits to the hole in the road, originally from Hereford street at the bottom of the moor then moved to Arbourthorne in the sixties and finished up living in Whirlow....still love to see the changes in my city

Never knew this existed, looked really cool. Its a shame they've destroyed it.

It needed an upgrade and better security, but it gave us an indoor shopping centre.

What few people seem to know is that the Hole in the Road wasn't originally supposed to be a hole at all, the 'flying saucer' structure was supposed to support a crystal dome, which was shown in the original artist's impressions. Presumably they ran out of cash, because the dome was never put in place, of course. Good idea to go down to St Mary's Gate Tim 👍On each side of most of the roads, there were 2 entrances to the Hole in the Road, with a combination of escalators, steps, and slopes. I don't know if anyone remembers the gang of rotten old men, who used to hang out there (and elsewhere in Sheffield) in the early to mid 1980's, aggressively shoving a felt-tip pen in people's faces, and then trying to extort a quid off them?! They reckoned they were veterans, raising money for charity, but were eventually prosecuted. I always thought it was funny how many people used to cut through the YEB showrooms going to and from Pond Street to the Hole in the Road, (not you though Tim), there was a thick line of people all day, but they were only using it as a cut-through, as there was an exit/entrance from the YEB showroom at the bottom of Esperanto Place 😁There were entrances outside the bank, but I don't think there was an entrance into it directly from the HITR, like with the C &A, for example, , as that was the vault! 🤣😉 You are right about Cockaynes/Schofields Tim, there was an entrance directly from the HITR 🙂 Sorry to hear you had bother in there Tim, but you weren't alone. They could have done something about that though, without filling the place with concrete 😒They've made a right mess of it haven't they? 👎Over the Bridge from Pond St, there was a supermarket, when supermarkets weren't that common, and an amusement arcade, and the escalators were between them, going up to the Cinecentre, the screens of which are still there, along with the old seating, the last time I was there (they are incorporated into the new cinema). My grandma was a cleaner at the Fiesta. I think you might have got a bit lost there Tim, the area has changed a lot.

Morning Jack. I have seen the artists impressions of the hole in a road with a mono rail, never new about the dome. Why the hole in the road couldn't be cleaned up and secured is beyond me. The super tram could have been put over the top of the hole in the road. Didn't realise I could have been sat in one of the old cinecentre screens in the Odeon. Just seen old picture of Angel St before the war, looked like a Fairy tail. They just want to erase our past as quickly as they can to confuse us. All the best Tim

It needed updating Steve I don't deny. But the council get bored and trash good concepts.

I used to work in an office. Way above the hole. Do you remember the fish tank?.

I remember the fish tank, disappointed we lost the hole in the road, it needed a facelift not filling in.

When I was very young in 1935 Sheffield had a wonderful transport system consisting of double deck trams, which provided transport everywhere. Unfortunately, a bunch of idiot leaders removed them. Also, Snig-Hill is rarely mentioned.
@timawells
@timawells Год назад
Worst decision they ever made removing the tram system, the one in the 1900s was even better, its on youtube. We have regressed. Snig hill and Angel street are dead, the SY police HQ ruined Snigg hill, once a thriving area.

The knocked down the beautiful old world buildings that the Luftwaffe missed and now it's deserted. Once Bridge Street bus station was got rid of no one had any reason to walk down Snig Hill.

They weren't idiots they were forcing people onto the buses then the buses had a monopoly. Nothing is ever by mistake.

It achieved a lot by the way of ANCIENTS! AND THE BUSSES DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE PREDESTINATION CUMMING FROM ALL ANGLES! NOW ITS THE PREDESTINATIONS ONLY EVERY WEAR?.

The traffic is quite bad in this area, I suspect its going to get worse as the work finishes in Sheffield.
@misscoutts6193

Wrong title Tim; it should be what did filling it in achieve?
@timawells
@timawells 4 месяца назад
The claim is it was full of drunks, they had to run supertram over it and there was no longer a need for it. I have never seen so many vehicles using the area.
@misscoutts6193
@misscoutts6193 4 месяца назад
I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as now. That is pushed as a rationale for why it had to go.

There was 5 entrances

I have pieced together. 8 entrances (1 was escalators onto High st) on the roundabout and one either side of the road into the buildings on Angel St and lots of direct entrances from the shops.

They filled it in because of the tram

That was their excuse, plans for the 70s mono rail showed it going over the top.
