You asked the question about if the emotional depth is justified, when you heard it in the second to last song, sealed vessel. That track includes the boss fight and the ending music that follows. Hollowknight is, ultimately, a tragedy. All the music helps create the world.
Oh, and yes, go listen to all the area soundtracks. I recommend listening to the title theme music first though, as that is the players first exposure. It is, appropriately enough, called Hollow Knight.
I'm late! I'm late! But, I feel I have an important addition. The second act of Sealed Vessel is a dirge. It's not a boss theme, it's a cry for help long overdue for answer. It's a harrowing revelation and a desire for release from anguish. Also: Pure Vessel is what Sealed Vessel was meant to be - that's why they sound so similar in the beginning. Without going into spoilers, the boss fought in Sealed Vessel is the same as Pure Vessel, but the latter is meant to be the dreams of the former.
the coolest part of Pure Vessel is that it's such a slow and moving song and it's playing while you're fighting the literal perfected version of yourself to the death. one of the most challenging fights to learn, super fast paced and nerve-wracking, and the music is a fucking BALLAD
Some good environmental themes to listen to could be : -Dirtmouth -Greenpath -Crystal Peak -Fungal Waste -City of tears -Kingdom’s edge -White palace/pale court(pale court is a live recorded version with a slightly different arrangement that doesn’t actually appear in the game, but it’s awesome) That’s all I can think of right now, but there are more! These are the most iconic ones though By the way you could also listen to the two tracks that have released for the upcoming sequel of this game if you want to. There is one boss theme called Lace, and one environmental theme called Bonebottom Edit : I forgot multiple ones like : -Queen’s gardens and the white lady -resting grounds -forgotten crossroads I guess but this one isn’t as good as all of the other ones imho
I found that naming tracks in this game is absolutely pointless when the whole ost is so freaking amazing. Absolutely no exceptions can be made. Its an impossible task for something that is too perfect for its own good.
Sealed vessel is the the tragic hero(?) Who became the last boss of the game that's why his theme sounds so epic and sad and like epilogue at the same time while the radiance is the hidden mastermind true last boss that's while her theme is so majestically evil
To be clear, that last track "Radiance" (labeled in your video, but not in the timestamps) was for another boss immediately following Sealed Vessel and I guess it was included with Sealed Vessel since you fight them kind of together so it could be considered another phase. Regardless, Sealed Vessel ends on that somber track and Radiance is when it picks up again.
Want to give context to pure vessel & sealed vessel, but also don't want to spoil the game's lore if you ever play it. it's a great game, well worth a try.
Sealed vessel is my favourite ost in hk. It captures the fight against the final boss so well. You start ready to fight your final enemy in a climate final battle against the character the game is named from. You feel a bit sad for him but you keep going but than through the fight the hollow knight stabs itself. You wonder why but you keep going, the music gets sad and the hollow knight continues to stabs itself, his attacks gets slower and weaker and he does more infected base attack. Its at that moment you realize that he isnt gone yet and that he wants to put himself out of his misery. The fight against an easy enemy becomes easier but in reality it becomes harder for you because it becomes a phycological battle in wich your feeling makes you act worse and unless you can put them aside you will lose.
*their* *they* *themselves* The vessels don't have gender One, hornet is called "the gendered child" Two, the king, when referring to the hollow Knight said "no mind to think" Last, the vessels are described as hollowed out shells so I think their bodies are just made of void.
Sealed vessel part 2 and radiance are actually mutually exclusive and for different endings. sealed vessel part 2 is an ending in tragedy(your sibling dies, the true enemy survives and the future looks bleak), radiance is an ending in a tragicomedy, (the true final boss is being fought, there's hope for their actual defeat, and the kingdom may be rebuilt) as there's more hope in the end.
two of these are "upgraded" versions of previous boss fights, not sure if you heard both in your last vid. "daughter of hallownest" is an upgraded form of "hornet", and "sisters of battle" is upgraded from "mantis lords"
To be completely honest the story of Hollow Knight is really complex, it could look like a silly bug game, but thats only the surface, its so deep its scary
I remember I liked Grimm's theme so much, I learned to dodge every of his attacks perfectly just so I could listen to the song, then I would let him kill me to come back whenever I wanted to hear that song again
Hello!! I’d love to hear you listen to the area themes. Honestly, since the game is really just split into area themes and boss themes, I’d love to see a livestream or other long form video of you reacting to the ost as a whole, in order, so you can hear all the gorgeous uses of leitmotif and other repeating lines.
You asked if the story of this game was complex and emotional? Yes. Absolutely yes. This game's story is amazing and subtle and an incredible showcase of melancholy, so your repeated use of the word "somber" fits right in.
