Another great video, and another 2k followers in the last 10 days. Strictly Come Guiding! (Yes it's me from Montreal -- fun fact, Telstar was the #1 song the day I was born, so that's giving away the game!) ALSO, when somebody asks, "what happened in 1789?", the answer is the FRENCH REVOLUTION. 😎

Joolz. I’ve been watching John Betjeman’s documentaries from the ‘70s. Such beautiful, gentle important records of history - now pieces of elegant antiquity themselves. Thank you for these beautiful productions. They are some of the most informative, joyful creations I have seen. In some ways I hope big corporations don’t grab them and ruin them. They’d lose their soul. Thank you my friend. They are a delight - particularly in these times.

The "Four Weddings and a Funeral" house is my old family home! I remember when the production team approached my Dad to get permission to film. Dad asked if they had picked the house because of it's exquisite Georgian architecture. "No" they replied, "we like it because it's so scruffy" Dad was mortified!

Relieved when I arrived next morning to no harm done. We used to frequent the Lord Nelson, now Horatios. They were one of the pubs involved in the 70s pub rock scene. Kilburn and the High Rds, Dr Feelgood, a covers band called Ice Cream were our favourite bands. Times were hard and we used to make half a pint of Trumans last as long as possible. Good days.

Hi Joolz, love all your videos but this one is rather special to me. As a kid I lived in Islington and my grandparents lived in Holloway Road. I used to go in Jones Brothers and most of the other shops you mentioned. I remember going to Holloway underground station and at the time they had those lifts with the sliding gates, like being in a cage, operated by an attendant. So this video was like a trip down memory lane for me. So thanks again Joolz and look forward to your next video, LB.

I was today years old when I learnt what’s under Finsbury Park even though several generations of my family have lived there since the 1930s. My mum always talks about seeing The Beatles at the Astoria/Rainbow. I only ever got to one gig at the Robey as the Garage and Powerhaus in Highbury and Islington got the better bands when I lived there in the 90s. I remember meeting Nick Hornby and asking if the music venue in High Fidelity was based on the Robey (it was). He’s also responsible for one of my other Highbury memories. We got to extras in Fever Pitch when hundreds of us lined the streets in the middle of the night to recreate the celebrations when Arsenal won the title in 1989. We had to jump around like crazy but in complete silence. Thanks for the video and I’ll look out for more in the future.

Fascinating tour recalling my stay at 109 Gillispie Road, bed and breakfast in 1956, awaiting ship boarding. From the attic, I could see the Highbury stadium corner to watch the match. The land lady ran the carry out shop, newspaper, cigarettes, milk and other snack articles. Day after the match, the players, Coach would step-in to collect news paper, cigarettes, to reead the previous day match comments. I am now 91, thoughrally enjoyed your tour. Cheers!

I was born in 1947 and lived in Ashburton Grove, which I believe was demolished to make way for the new football ground, but I seem to remember the Coronet as being our Saturday morning pictures venue where all the kids on the street would go. we moved away in the late 50s but i do remember doing a lot of walking around the area with my mum up to see an aunt in Highgate village as it is now or down to visit Nan near Chapel Street market where we would often go to a pie and mash shop, my memory is a little cloudy now but I remember the old cobble streets. I have to say I'm probably remembering through rose coloured glasses but it doesn't look quite so nice now

@@rebekahtaylor6142 As a kid I do remember a railway coal yard at the end of the Grove and coal delivery lorries would come up the road with sacks of coal stacked on the back for house deliveries, and every now and again a man would be on the back of the lorry and empty a sack of coal onto the road as it went by and all us kids would rush out with buckets to pick it up. My parents would tell me not to fight as there was plenty. I think also I remember that Queensland Road was a cul de sac with a Sunday School at the end, but I could well be wrong. I don't seem to remember having many cares, we would play football in the road and I would often go to Davises, a corner shop at the end of the Grove, for a pint of milk or sweets. This whole post has left me feeling rather sad although my standard of living is somewhat better now here in Devon I do feel that they were on the whole happier times, Thanks for the reply.

One very hot day during the school summer holidays, the Astoria's ice cream fridge broke down, so because they were all beginning to melt, they let us take away all the ice creams we could carry! 10-year-old kids' dream come true! Also, I heard a Beatles concert, standing outside the Astoria. Couldn't actually hear much music, just a load of screaming girls. Very impressed that you know about the spiral escalator at Holloway Road.

She is Icelandic, so needed a more pronouncable name, and travelling through the station, she realised Siddy Holloway sounded a good name.

Great video Joolz. You should've mentioned that the "new" Arsenal stadium at Ashburton Grove (Emirates Stadium) was built on the site of a waste transfer facility. The irony being that the locals who's homes now look out onto the stadium and whom now sell cooked food etc from their front gardens; protested about the stadium being built...but have seen their property value increase due to the stadium and regeneration of the area - as they are no longer looking out on to the local waster transfer site.

Residential development in Highbury Barn started in 1820, with the building of 5 semi-detached "modest villas" by Joseph Cubitt, one of which remains albeit as 8 flats. The imposing terrace just north of the shops was built 1829-41, spoiling the view from the villas. The old Highbury Arsenal ground and environs all contained St. John's College, a nonconformist seminary; Aubert Park was originally called College Road.

This popped up randomly on my feed, weird because my late mum lived on Holloway Road as a child. I wish I could have shown her this and asked her questions. She was evacuated to Cornwall for a short while, returned to visit her evacuee ‘parents’ regularly, met my dad, married him and went back to London only once. She took my sister and I when I was 16 and she still knew her way around, she showed us the sites and we visited our step grandad who still lived in Holloway. Thanks, it was fascinating to actually see where she would have lived and she supported Arsenal 😬.

Great video Joolz. What a pity the ' council ' have not replicated the Highbury & Islington Station - How about starting a petition, Badger.

I used to live at Clapham Junction and took the 19 bus to school at Tooting Bec. On the way back home, the destination blind on the bus showed Highbury Barn, so now I know where and why.

We’ve preordered our copy. It is the least we can do when you have helped two Irish people learn so much about our new city in our retirement.

My old stamping grounds. I lived on Kingsdown Road, down by Sadlers Wells and Hornsey Lane as a kid in the 80s, and had family and friends in Tufnell Park (still do) and by North Road and Caledonian Road and used to visit all the time. Then I lived round there 2000-2002. Much much nostalgia.

I live in Highbury - I saw one of my neighbours on the video! 😂. Your friend is a better actor than Andie MacDowell - ‘is it raining? I hadn’t realised’. You forgot to mention Joe Orton as you passed Central Library - perhaps you did that in another video. Very interesting - as always 💙

Dammit! Was that the famous library? I shall have to mention him in my video about Canonbury

I think Orton and Halliwell also used the South Library at 115-117 Essex Road for their kleptomanical volumnous adaptations.
