Hollywood Clones: Why Every Actor Looks The Same Now

The Take

It’s getting harder and harder to tell movie stars apart... Beyond the Chrises (Pine, Hemsworth, Evans, and Pratt,) there are Ryans Gosling, Reynolds, and Phillippe. And Ryan Murphy shows have a rotating cast of square-jawed, dark-haired guys who are so interchangeable it’s even a joke on set. Instead of movie stars, we have movie star types. So who are these male movie star types, and why is it getting harder and harder to tell your favorite actors apart?

I actually think the Chris men are very different. The problem is Hollywood don't play to their individual strengths because of US, the viewers. The media we like to passively consume is this weird thing of "aspirational mediocrity" - we like to sink ourselves into people who are privileged, look good, give us image & content, and don't appear to have that much personality. They become blank slates for us to project our ideas of our best selves, essentially. Which is super unfair, because all these actors have something special about them as individual people that could lend brilliantly to well-chosen roles. But because of our own desire to insert ourselves into people who fit into restrictive body standards, it actually ends up killing off both their true potential as entertainers, AND our true potential as human beings.

This reminds me of a Slate article a couple of weeks back, wondering why so many action heroes are named Jack, James or John. There's a little bit of an 'everyman' theory to it, and while I don't think the Ryans or Chrises are meant to be everymen in the same way, I do think Hollywood's need to follow formulas and manufacture 'types' hasn't changed. But if we lived in The Good Place, they'd all be Denzels.

I think it very important to recognize that it's access to steroids that allows all these dudes to have the body-types they do. Physical training and strict diets can only do so much, even with the best genetics. Nearly all of these guys are on gear. Don't really want to debate about this, go look up the usage of steroids in the general population, and then consider the pressure all these men are under. It's creates a false reality of what men should look like, very unhealthy all around, and not nearly talked about enough.

@@Roshuwah There's scott pilgram. Everyone was surprised at his role in knives out, but prior to being captain america that was a pretty average role for him, I think. So not even really a 'ryan'. I question this video's premise. Three of the Chris's (WTF is the plural of Chris?) are fairly similar in ways. But Hemsworth is as much as a roided out beefcake as Stalone ever was, while Pratt get's half his chuckles from being a little round. And Gosling may look like Deadpool but they couldn't be less alike. Blade Runner, First Man, La La Land, Drive... Reynolds has nothing like that in his IMDB because he doesn't have that range. Conversely Gosling has never got a blockbuster like Deadpool and Deadpool II across the finishline not only as an actor but as a producer who had a lot of creative input. They brought up the nice guys as evidence he's like Reynolds, but really he's known for for stuff like La La Land, Blade Runner and the Notebook. Which couldn't be more different than Reynolds.
@VixxKong2
@VixxKong2 Год назад
@@claytonberg721 I agree with most of your points except the part about Reynolds not being able to have a range. I personally think that at this point he built a brand for himself by being in light-hearted comedies. So doing other roles would hurt his brand. Ryan Gosling, kinda like Brad Pitt, is the type to explore different roles and different stories. So he doesn't have a brand like Reynolds. But I'm sure if Ryan Reynolds was to accept a more serious gloomy role he could play it. Just like Miles Teller, who is known for mostly comedic roles too or young adult novels typa movies, could play in Whiplash and Too Old to Die Young, being absolutely unrecognizable in the latter.

Thank you so much for this one! As a high school teacher I have been increasingly concerned for many years at how body image related problems that we once encountered almost exclusively in our female students have now been afflicting boys as well: eating disorders, body dysmorphia, body image-related depression, etc. Unfortunately and infuriatingly, the pressures on girls and women have not gone away and remain a bigger problem in terms of numbers, but the fact that the issue has been discussed openly for so many years has at least given many girls and women a vocabulary to use and empowered many to seek help, or resist - even defy - the pressures in the first place. Meanwhile, as the rates of boys with these mental health issues have skyrocketed, they have largely suffered in silence as it is only recently that the issue is starting to be discussed. Videos like this one are an important contribution.

How rude! The handsome boys as you call them, are not clones! They are all very different as we all are. I feel like the Chris's all are very different in looks, attitude, personality. Just because super hero actors are buff, doesn't mean they are clones. It means we're obsessed with super hero movies.

Certainly it is better for media commentary brands such as this channel to have stars. I'm not certain it's better for movies, though. There are countless examples of stars being cast in roles because of their fame and not their suitability for that role. Every breakout role anyone ever had was an unknown actor getting a chance instead of a star being cast.

I am sorry - but Ryan Gosling and Reynolds mushed together feels … wrong. Drive, A place beyond the pines, La La Land and even Nice guys are just on another level then what Reynolds delivers in his movies over the last dozen years… Yes Gosling also gets cast in generic stuff like The Gray Man, but Reynolds kinda only plays generic same-ish, deadpool-like, i-don’t-need-to-act-cause-i-have-charisma-and-a-bunch-of-jokes roles, while Gosling actually acts in a whole lot of movies. Your point in general is still valid, but it pains me, to see this great actor and this actor who can act but chooses not to, to be put in the same box.

I don’t think this is inherently bad. I think there just needs to be a balance when we only had distinct movie stars the pool was much smaller now far more actors can get regular work maybe making less money which again maybe isn’t the worst thing it’s how do we make it more democratic for more people have opportunities, but not be abused because of their lack of power

I joke with my friends that when they need a black leading man they open up the directory and only Michael B Jordan's name is there, or when they want an edgy teen it's Zendaya or Sydney Sweeney, or a quirky young guy it's Tom Holland. There's like 7 actors in Hollywood who get regular work.

I would either never get cast at all, be a very specific typecast actor, or be a superstar. I generally never get the "you remind me of" comments from anyone. When I ask for celeb look-alikes, so I can maybe learn from their personal style, I get no one. And even when I had a subscription to an AI to find my doppelgangers, it's come up with pretty much nothing.

To me this seens like a refinement of something Hollywood has always done wich is casting certain ethnicities/body types to play certain roles. for example, the "mexican guy" is always skinny and is a drug dealer, the "latin women" are always hot and fierce, the "brunette woman" is always the villain and... The blonde athletic guy is always the hero. Now they're just adding that up with "the hero in the movie must be blonde and named Chris".
@VixxKong2
@VixxKong2 Год назад
Where is the brunette woman the villain? I usually see the blond girl as the antagonist or the superficial girl that doesn't get the hero in the end. Like in Mean Girls.

@@VixxKong2 that was a common trope in old movies from the 50's and 60's (and older), i've also seen this in some soap operas (mainly mexican and brazilian ones). But you're right, the trope has changed since them 🤔
