I've always been confused by house dresses, afternoon dresses, and evening dresses, and how to tell them apart. And was that just something "upper class" women followed, or were those rules for everyone?
@isabellessley3513
@isabellessley3513 3 года назад
A house dress is casual, might be something comfy to relax in, or to do work in (cleaning, farm work, etc. May also be worn to the store, but not anything "nice" by any stretch). Afternoon dress is a little nicer, maybe for a day out, visiting freinds, etc. Evening dress is formal, for a nice party or an evening date or something. At least this is how I understand it. We still observe these rules ourselves to an extent, we just use different words.
@megan2176
@megan2176 3 года назад
@@isabellessley3513 Ya, I imagine the style/cut of the dress would make a difference too, and the type of fabric used, and what embellishments were added. And maybe even the colour? It reminds me of a scene in Little Women (the Winona Ryder one) where Meg goes to a party, and gets criticised for wearing an afternoon dress, but I was always confused because the dress didn't seem any less pretty than the others were wearing. Anyway, there's bound to be a bunch of videos here on RU-vid about this stuff, I should do some digging. ;)

In addition to what everyone else said, daytime wear (like our modern Church clothes, brunch outfits, office workwear, family BBQ casual or farmer's market shopping outfits) usually had & still have less skin showing, more matte fabric, and is rarely floor-length. While evening (cocktail attire, formal, clubwear) might show shoulder, cleavage, or have thigh slits, with strappy shoes, plenty of sparkle, shiny and slinky fabrics. And a skirt might go all the way down to the floor (whereas daytime maxi skirts usually reach no further than ankle length). Daywear (and daytime makeup) is often lighter in color than evening wear but that's hardly a "rule." House dresses were super utilitarian but I think they start to get confusing around the 1950s, because housewives were supposed to look glamorous at home for their husbands. So house dresses got fancier and tighter so that if I wore one today it might be my Sunday best. But most house dresses in the 20s-70s were usually loose button-up shirt dresses or baggy pinafore style, and never "suit" style (with a matching jacket and skirt-- that's afternoon or evening wear). My family were poor farmers in the 20s and 30s in the southern US and I think most ppl in their community had work clothes and/or house dresses, one or maybe two Sunday best for church which they might also wear to daytime events or traveling anywhere, and one evening outfit. Poor people still did fancy stuff, like school dances and parties. When Gone With The Wind came out my Grandpa's high school all traveled to the city and wore evening wear (gowns and tuxes) to the theater, so they must have had them or been able to borrow from someone or rent. Edited to add: I found a bunch of tiny photobooth pictures that my Grandma's friends took in the early 1930s, which are goofy and adorable. I think the photobooth sessions cost a dime, and everyone was super poor but I think it's hilarious that the second selfies became technologically available to them they were shelling out the dimes left and right. Anyway they looked really stylish with cute berets, sleek hairdos, makeup, smart suits and well-fitted blouses, so poor rural people definitely cared about adhering to style.

For work I have to wear, althleisure, and while I dont mind wearing it at work because I have to I find it embarrassing to wear anywhere else. So when Im done work I change into a long skirt and a blouse and this evening I was asked "oh are you going out somewhere special" and as always I say "no just going to the grocery store and then going home" haha in the city I live in people never dress this way but I imagine if I lived somewhere like Montreal or somewhere in Europe people would question me less on why Im dressed nicely. Sometimes I get self conscious because people stare at me but I like modest feminine vintage clothing so I guess its good to learn not to care what people think. When I was in school I received rude comments but since Ive been out of school no one has ever said anything mean.

Both men and women, from all socio-economic backgrounds, took time to dress, do their hair, etc., and they looked polished. Even for a run to the market. Now, just take a look at the humongous slob/blobs shopping at Walmart, etc. . . . Sad.

Thank you so much for posting this! I was looking for an example of the typical "runway walk" to see if it existed in the 20s-30s. Mary Fielding demonstrated exactly that. I've been reading about Stephen Tennant (1920s) who was said to "walk as if his knees were tied together" and this is exactly what I've imagined it to look like. Not as much hip movement as the modern variant but the legs crossing one over the other as you walk would give the impression of knees being tied together. He was such a fashion model! 😊
