Oh my god, that segment with James Brown is phenomemal.

Especially the drummer. I never heard such a fat soul rhythm comin' from one person . And by the way, 'The Famous Flames' always had 2 drummers. That cat was playin' like 2 drummers. He was playin' so furious at one point the hi hat 35:24 wing nut loosened (holds 2 cymbals) stand & cymbal stand almost knocked off the stage 37:26. But then again all the members guitars, amplifiers & drums were sponsored by the English based Vox Corporation. Back then many English bands used that brand. Many of they're guitars (listen closely to that mushy bass guitar & amp) were shit & they're amps (at least here in the states) were of shit hole (ha ha) value too. Vox drums ? The worlds worst make. They're guitars, amps & drums could never ever compete with Americas Fender, Gibson or the trend setting (thanks to Ringo Starr) Ludwig famous All American Drums. And the words Vox & James Brown are so apart as far as a soul man's choice of equipment. I bet the Vox people paid James Brown handsomely for using their gear. I think their contract with them ran out in the early 70's. I always gave Vox credit for coming out with cool looking guitars & amps even though the American line somehow broke, warped or wore out long before their due. One instrument I will always give kudos to is their signature 'Vox Continental Organ' Ya know that crafty European looking red & black transistorized keyboard held up by twin chrome legs. Originally made famous I think by 'The Dave Clark Five'. Mike Smith sang lead & did all those cool solo's 'Can't You See That She's mine' & many, many more. I never saw nor heard of that compact organ, until 'The Dave Clark Five' introduced it to us. They were very inventive as far as 'The English Beat Goes ! We take so much for granted, looking back at the (honest to God) stars & talent that for some unforeseen reason today's jerk off (must I label them as such) celebritys will never hold a candle to !

It's a crime that this series isn't on DVD. I've watched a ton of these uploaded episodes and each one is a masterclass in late 60s culture. I'm amazed at how well preserved these tapes are; if they include the original commercials they must have been made off-air the night of broadcast. This was a good decade before VCRs became common and I've seen videotaped off-air recordings from 10 years ago that aren't half as good.

The lady dancing with Sammy at the beginning was that Atrovise Davis, Sammy's wife? She started off as a dancer and might been one of the dancers in his play "Golden Boy". My parents went to see that play when it came to Chicago back then said is was great and Sammy was the best! Charo was excellent guitarists I remember seeing her all the time when she would perform on The Johnny Carson show, in those early years she couldn't speak a lick of English, as time went on, her English skills improved but only a little. JB is the man hands down! I remember watching Ed Sullivan show as a child, but I don't remember this program at all, thanks for uploads, enjoyed very much! The number of cigarettes and liquor commercials seen at the time was enormous - that was until the government decided because of the Surgeon Warnings they made it illegal to show any commercial or print ads featuring Cigarettes. "Here Comes the Brides" was a great show! Shown the day before my 6th birthday

Why did they always lip-sync the opening number?
@BusterMaxwellTV
@BusterMaxwellTV 6 лет назад
Brady Love, Dancing while singing is difficult, there are multiple camera angles and live cuts, plus no place to swing the overhead boom in where it was unobtrusive and clear-sounding. Sammy also probably wanted to save his pipes for the big ballad. Opening number could have been shot out-of-sequence as well. Many times, it was just easier.
