I suppose this is a bit of a spoiler, but the cameo by Joe Besser at the end of the airplane sketch has got to be the only time he played an actual homosexual character, right?
This has to be at least Fall 1968. The Song This Guy's in Love (Herb Alpert) had been a big hit that summer. No date listed above. the little girl singing on the left in this song is a cute riot. But generally the King Family was always a big yawn. The Von Trapps they are not.
It's all very well saying you shouldn't bring politics into entertainment but it was clearly considered ok for the conservative pro-establishment brigade to do so. I think it was in appalling taste when the Civil Rights Movement was going on, when people were fighting against lynch mobs and social injustice to promote a song which just says that if you don't like it, you can leave. This was one noticeable feature of the Hollywood Palace shows. They only wanted artists who either liked to promote the idea that America was perfect or did not voice any views. Progressive artists like Harry Belafonte, Peter, Paul & Mary, Johnny Cash, Donovan, Joan Baez who also loved their country but did not like injustice, were shamefully ignored.
March 22,1969. I was hired by Jewish store owners to shoot blacks in the back of the head with my rooftop, silenced Winchester model 67 on lower Blue Hill Ave. We kept South Boston the seat of white power in Boston.
