The mechanical versions of these are called nipkow disks, BBC used them for early tv but they were god aweful because there were poor standards for calibrating it so you'd be constantly changing it station to station. This is the pinnacle of tech rn... actually no, it's not. This is the ~$130 dollar version while I'm sure there's a lot better ones for more money, to the point we're approaching 30fps (monitor territory!)

@zobook
@zobook 5 лет назад
@@akirahideo6904 if you do it sorta like a 3D print of the object it will look very 3D with no tracking needed, imagine a sphere made of big-to-small circles going from the back "fan" (the big circle) to the front "fan" (small circle), you get a 3D effect. Of course the effect works on a limited angle range, like Martin Gardner's 3D dragon illusion. I hope i make myself clear in English.

Very cool looking! Those POV displays have always fascinated me, even the simple “wiper” types that swing back and forth to display the date and time. There’s just something so magical about having this virtual image floating there. Have to wonder what the largest one ever made is like, I would assume eventually you’d hit limits in materials and stability with a really large, heavier one, and since you get a better image the faster it goes you would likely end up with tip speeds that were crazy.

Yeah, I've had a passing fancy for these things for years now and they've certainly improved. Still to pricy for the novelty, especially at the effective resolution they have. Incidentally, the 4 blade versions not only have higher effective resolution and framerate, but they also support wifi and have 'app control', so presumably you can change the animations on the fly and support more features overall, like streaming a video. The page for one of them doesn't even mention .GIF in the supported list, though presumably it would support it. Based on one of the pictures in the description, it seems you might be able to link multiple quad-fans together to produce one larger image?

The thing that makes the old intro interesting is the reel to reel machine is driving the effect. This device wouldn’t need the R2R machine, so it loses that DIY mad professor vibe. It’s more efficient, but less intriguing.

I remember when these came out in the late 90s and imagining a Blade runner-esque future where they were fitted to the tops of taxis and police vehicles to display advertising and information messages. Of course now the actual future is here and if they wanted to do that they'd just use LCDs (much like the buses in Children of Men). Still a cool looking display though, there's something very retro-futuristic about them. The spinning globe looks particularly cool and reminds me of the huge 3D one they have at the Media Museum in Bradford (I would love to know how that works - some sort of internal projection onto a suspended sphere). I have a miniature version (of the PoV fan) that my late wife got me about 10 years ago - paid about £12 for it from the gadget shop. It's only about 8" across with flexible fan blades and displays an analogue / digital time and date display in red and green. Cool to look at, but it doesn't really work very well as a fan and the novelty quickly wore off.

I bought a coworker a handheld fan that did this sort of thing. It was only one color led, but it would show the logo and name of his favorite American football team. The one I got him worked as a fairly decent handheld fan, and the type and logo looked very nice.

This would be extremely cool if you could feed LIVE video to it via composite, or HDMI. If they could get the resolution up to 1080 and accept LIVE HDMI I would pay whatever it cost to get one of these. How Frigging Awesome!!!!!!! This is one of the coolest things i've ever seen. Thank You Techmoan for showing me the light (LED)
