As a child I developed this expectation that being an adult would resemble this scene after viewing the film and for many people this is reality. This fucking film.
Just a well meant advice: Do NOT fall asleep on your sofa while watching this when tired... because this particular scene will cause the weirdest psychotic dreams you can possibly imagine. The music seems to trigger lots of crazy shit in the brain... at least this happened to me. Stay awake. Stay awake some more. Stay awake and be happy.
"You are a true believer. Blessings of the state...blessings of the masses. Thou art subject of the divine. Created in the image of man...by the masses...for the masses."
And I thought it was the perfect musical background for sperm collection. Look at that thing that comes down from the ceiling! What happens with the "sample"? It looks like there is a tube going into the ceiling.. That should give you psychotic dreams thinking about a whole other network of pipes next to fresh and waste water pipes. Transporting the semen of millions of men. Maybe some of that goes into the "nutriblocks" she has on her tray. Of course enzymatically processed to convert the proteins back to the individual amino compounds and then ran through a ribosome-like device in a stripped down to the necessities designer cell, that has a protein like casein "hardcoded". Hardcoding casein into a dedicated device would make sense, because it would only have to make that one specific protein. And using natural ribosomes would require having to produce the corresponding mRNA for casein over and over for each protein molecule produced. You know, just to enhance your psychotic dreams.
"Where did you get this car?" "I was just issued it. I took it for a test drive and ran straight through a crowd at the dispersal center." [audience laughs] "Oh, that's terrible!" "No, it was wonderful, because I didn't hit anybody, just an 11-14. [audience laughs] "Well, that's wonderful!" "No, it's terrible. I lost both arms!" "Oh, that's terrible, terrible!" "No it was wonderful, wonderful! Because my hand? It was paralyzed anyway." [audience laughs loudly] "That was very funny..." -_-
This film was prescient on so many levels when you look at today's world. It was clearly inspired by George Orwell's "1984" and Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World".
As time goes on, some aspects of this film become more and more a reality... the mood stabilizing drugs, the police beatings, now with Covid, everything being sterilized. Scary.
George Lucas THX Masturbation Now on sale at skywalker ranch gift store 0:21 George Lucas is more fucked up in the head than I thought he was he likes to do star wars films with "here they come cum" what a pervert.
@Craig Browning : I know. Furthermore, the State actually keeps the spermatozoa by which to create the next generation of test-tube babies, whatwith natural sexual intercourse being illegal, as the Government handles all reproduction. One of many aspects of a "Brave New World" to be avoided in Reality, see.
@@codeoptimizationware2803 In Brave New World people are manufactured/grown plus conditioned to be perfectly adapted to their designed class and what kind of work they will be doing in the future. I very much doubt they actually use something as "stone age" as spermatozoa in a future of THX1138 where they are able to artificially create their own chromosomes and tailor-make humans to whatever gap needs to be filled. The reason sexual intercourse is banned is because it's "random" and results in some "unplanned" human. Brave New World however conveys something THX-1138 fails to do - a perfectly balanced human society with no conflicts where everybody from the top classes to the lowest classes are perfectly content with their role in life. The irony in it all is that most humans in *ou world* have a primitive urge and need to be like everybody else anyway. Why? Because they're hopeless creatures of habit. People wrongly believe they have the freedom of choice but in reality they are looking for any excuse to have freedom *from* choice. Why? It's the least confrontative and requires the least amount of thinking. Heck, this has been proven time and time again how people chose to conform the majority even when their own senses tell them it must be wrong. Seen the psychological experiments of people being tested of what line is the longest?? Actors are instructed to say the same lie to see whether the real test person will agree with the majority. Guess what? Most do. The government? Yet again this tired, old the government is the bogeyman. Listen. Governments aren't scary. PEOPLE are scary. For it is THEY who bring bad governments to power or support tyrannical regimes. Too many people are ignorant suckers who define their "happiness" from an awfully one-dimensional scope. Need I remind you that Hitler was voted democratically into power and the nazis were by far the most popular German party in the 1933 elections? In THX-1138 there is not a single sign of a government. And you know what? There is absolutely no need for one. Why would there be in a hive-like society where people's roles, work and goals are already created? A government is required to meet either the ordinary people's demands or a small number of elites. This is because people need representatives in power to do their bidding. Even dictatorships work this way. But what need is there of a government in a fully automated system designed for maximum efficiency like a giant ant-hive? I'll tell you something which all dictatorships understand better than all anarchists in the world. Freedom alone isn't worth spit in a world where the basic needs of humans aren't met. And in a world where most people are gluttonous ignoramuses who can't define themselves except from ancient religious scriptures (God has a plan for you, don't worry) or overwhelmingly superficial pursuits (if I own a bigger car than my neighbor I am happier than him) and have very little understanding of the grand scheme of things you're literally handling over a huge candy store to be managed by a group of 8 year olds if you grant them more freedom. There's always that big 8 year old who can muscle out the other 8 year olds leaving them with scraps. So there has to be an adult checking them. In some cases when you're literally dealing with wild chimps you need a tough handler with a whip. Or the apes take over the ape house. And as long as most people are chimps, expect governments to exist for the petty needs of these chimps. People complaining about their governments in developed and democratic nations sound like spoiled kids whining about why they can't have their "freedom" to eat candy every day and why their parents urge them to eat these "yucky vegetables". They are so "oppressed". Long story short. There is no bogeyman, big-brother government in THX-1138 and neither was it Lucas's intention of portraying one.
I've yet to find an interview where George Lucas talks about it specifically, but I've always thought he was making a comment on race and society, on how SF films have often viewed the future, and possibly on Hollywood and racial casting. What's also interesting to me is how SRT (a "Black" hologram in the film who tries to escape with THX from the underground society by jumping into a car and trying to drive off in it) and how he really seems to be a real person and only thinks he's a hologram.
This. Welp, you saw what it took to complete Red Tails 😐 I like your take on the hologram motif; it reminds me of Dr. Joy DeGruy’s commentary on cognitive dissonance concerning black Americans and their treatment. I suppose add Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man too.
Between this, and the first Star-Trek film, is it any wonder that I have the hots for bald chicks? These films came out right around my "formative years".
Maybe he still had vision when he created Jar Jar Binks, and people just weren't willing to see it. After all, we're still talking about Jar Jar Binks, aren't we?
And if he had kept directing after "Episode IV," and not sat it out for 22 years, he could have developed the directing chops to deliver it. He was a Padawan learner as a director.

That was the point though. If you find yourself represented in a dystopian future setting, and you don't feel reduced to an object, then the writer needs to start another draft of the script. When the main character meets a black character, he completely believe himself to not be real, and to be just a hologram.
