Omg you guys missed the video 😭😭😭 the video was so iconic. You guys have to watch it some time - it makes the song so much more impactful. People are so judgmental about Van Hagar era Halen but I love them. I think you guys would love When It’s Love, Love Walks In, and Not Enough from the Hagar era 💕✨ Also, I miss Crystal Pepsi!! This song was used for the commercial and is burned into many of our minds. 😊
The music video for 'Right now' was hailed as one of the best in the MTV era of music... Van Halen appeared in scattered sequences... Sammy Hagar is only seen singing the line "Only missed by a fraction..."
This was when Sammy Hagar had taken over lead vocals in the band and it helped the band grow to one of the biggest and most influential bands that has hastened ever been.
This is actually the third album with Sammy on lead vocal, but I agree and definitely felt it's the album where they really hit their writing stride as a band with Sammy, though I loved OU812 as well, the album prior. But I'm one that loves all eras of VH, I never understood some of those that felt you had to pick DLR or Sammy, love them for what they were in the time.
Eddie was first classically trained on piano as a young child. He was so bored with lessons he never bothered to learn how to read the music, but was so gifted he would just listen to what the instructor played and could mimic it perfectly by ear. He won several piano competitions as a child all the while never learning how to actually read the music.
Guys.. A suggestion for you.. this song needs to be watched WITH the music video (which won video of the year... I think.. it makes a lot more sense if you watch it that way). As always, love the channel!
Eddie was an amazing keyboard player in addition to his stellar guitar skills. Sammy was not just a great singer, but a great guitar player and songwriter. And Michael Anthony with the high harmonies really was the consistent bridge between Diamond Dave and Sammy.
Eddie said in one interview that David had held him back in his music composing. Once Van-Hagar got together Eddie was free to expand the music and write much more complex compositions.
This song was everywhere in the early 90s. From Nike commercials to informercials about world hunger, peace for war-torn countries, etc .... and even in anti-drug adds they played in school during assemblies.
Great that you did another Van Hagar song! ;) I think this makes three, after "Dreams" and "Poundcake". Some of the other bangers by the Hagar-led Van Halen include "Feels So Good", "Best of Both Worlds" and "Amsterdam".
@@mipacker Saw VH 8 times, once with a 5 star VIP package (front row, backstage pass, meet the band, my guitar autographed by Ed and band on Nov 1st 2007 Wash DC Verizon Center, Valerie Bertinelli on my left next to me to watch her son, got massive pics and it was incredible! Took my dad to this show). That was the Dave reunion I saw twice on that tour but the other 6 times I saw them play this song with Sammy starting in Oct 91 (An unknown Alice in Chains opened at the Capitol Center with a 45 min set) and VH played this song live every time I saw them. It was amazing. ..... And yes, Layne Staley blew me away. Shame he threw it all away.
For me, this album with Sammy Hagar was their masterpiece. And the tour to support this album was by far the best for the group. Live, this song was stellar.
Their masterpiece was their first album. David Lee Roth is so much better than Hagar. They aren't even the same band with Hagar. They should have changed their name. Their songs didn't even have the same sound. Eddie was still amazing, and Alex on the drums, but they weren't classic Van Halen.
@@philsigman9088 I said they SHOULD have changed their name, because it wasn't the same band anymore. It doesn't have to be about their last name. I'm basing my opinion solely on the music.
@@aimeegargus61 It's all in the eye of the beholder and your eyes are very narrow slits. You are so closed-minded and you have the gall to tell somebody else that their opinion is wrong. CHANGE THE BAND NAME? REALLY? What a great example of a Narcissist you make! And an Elitist Snob to boot! Your picture should be used twice in the thesaurus.
This is one that the video really enhances the message. It was really the first "serious" song this glorious party band made. The keyboard music was basically one of Eddie's " throwaways" but Sammy heard him playing it in another room and went in and started singing the lyrics he'd already come up with but hadn't put to music. One of my absolute favorite Van Halen hits.
J, you are used to Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Their sound changed significantly once Sammy Hagar came onboard to replace Roth. Despite EVH being the band leader, Sammy’s influence on their sound for the 2nd 10 years is unmistakable. Despite experiencing both iterations, my favorite is Van Hagar (as we VH fans call it). Nearly everyone alive during that period favors one or the other more, but we almost universally love both!
Yes VH will always be David Lee Roth as the lead singer to me. Just such a dynamic personality. I liked Sammy before he joined VH and they were lucky to get him. Those are good songs too, just not the same for me that grew up in the DLR days. I almost wish they had changed the name a little, just to show they didn't ignore that there was a change. They probably hoped the fans would ignore, instead they just became a different but great band.
I favor the young, poor and hungry VH. Marshals and Kramers over Peavey and Musicman...and Fender, but I love it all. Dave reminds of my teens and Sammy reminds me of my 20s...I was 30 when Gary joined...bummer that I can not look forward more . I like Wolf, but he has not really lived up.I think he will eventually let out his inner Eddie, but he seems to try to suppress it
Appreciate the Roth years, but the Hagar years are equally great, if not greater...depending on your taste and the sound of the band at any given point.

This song was timeless the minute it came out. Sammy really hit a new level of lyrical excellence and the music created and crafted by Eddie is just perfection. It was a great message at a time of change. The video version is worth seeking out as it ads to the message. Eddie was trying to mature in his skill as a songwriter and not just be seen as a shredder. "Dreams", "Why Can't this be Love," and "Summer Nights," are a few more classics. You know songwriting is a curious thing and there's no one way that a song gets written. It can start as a jam session or be worked up from a demo; lyrics first, music first or all together. In the case of VH Eddie and Alex worked out all of the music first and Sammy (or Dave, to give Dave due credit) had to put words to that music, and I think that Dave and Sammy did a brilliant job.
One of my favorite VH songs. Eddie was playing the keyboards on this song but don’t forget, Van Halen was not just Eddie, so Alex got the spot light on drums this time.
I've been rocking to Van Halen for over 40 years. They opened for the Stones back in October 1981 at the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida. I was there and just 19 years old back then. The concert ticket was just $15.00 and it's the "cherry" in my overall concert ticket stub collection 41 years later.
You can't listen to this whole album and not want want to become a drummer. Alex is such a tasteful drummer and the drum sound on this album is killer.
Here in Canada, the album 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" was (briefly) banned in some jurisdictions because of the acronym produced by those words. After MUCH ridicule, those local authorities backed down :)
When I was younger I used to get so excited when this video came on the MTV. What a song and what a video. Hopefully you'll check it out when you get a chance.
I’ve been accompanying you on your musical journey for well over a year now, and I wanted to say Thank You. You both are taking the time to really LEARN about the bands & artists and it shows when you reference that learned knowledge. It’s what has kept me engaged and invested and coming back each day. Also the absolute joy you both show - even when the song may not be your cup of tea.
Great to see younger people enjoying the music I grew up with . It was truly a fantastic time to listen to great music. We had pop, punk , rock , heavy metal and grunge 🥰 🎶.
This whole album just smokes. Edward was an award-winning pianist when he was young. There's an acoustic version of this tune with just Ed and Sammy that's pretty cool. SO many great songs! I highly encourage you to react to their songs "Runaround," "5150" and "Top of the World" live! Van Halen live is just an absolute party! Also check out "Amsterdam," "Can't Stop Lovin' You" and "Judgement Day (live)." Guys...just keep hittin' up Van Halen!! Oh...one more thing, just for Jay: GO CHIEFS!!! 😎
The piano riff from Eddie is one that goes back to the early 80s, as it was used in a scene in the movie The Wild Life, the supposed sequel to Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Eddie and Alex were both multi instrumentals, and EVH draws you in with the piano, Alex hits you with the drums, Mikey with the bass line, and Sammy with the message of urgency: don't wait til tomorrow to fulfill your dreams, go and do it RIGHT NOW! One of my total favorites from the might VH!
I have been trying to find that movie for years.I think it was Chris Penn, and Lea Thompson, I had the cassette soundtrack. it was great, One of the songs I think was "Donut City"....good times Charles... I will no see if RU-vid has it... I think it has been 30 years since I have seen it
both Eddie and Alex Van Halen the drummer and eddie's brother are both accomplished concert pianists as children and they grew to be one of the greatest rock bands that ever existed
Eddie was classically trained on piano since he was young and was very good at it. David Lee Roth is by far my favorite Van Halen era but they had some good songs w/Sammy. Just a different vibe, more slicked out.
That IS Eddie on the piano, the guitar and the organ at the end. He wrote this song guys (all the songs) - and they're right, you should check out the video, it's really well done
Amber & Jay, here are some other good Van Halen songs with Sammy Hagar on vocals you haven't reacted to yet: "Why Can't This Be Love?", "Summer Nights", "Best of Both Worlds", 5150", "When It's Love", "Finish What Ya Started", "Top of the World", and "Can't Stop Lovin' You".
I was absolutely going to recommend this one for you guys, had no doubt you would love it. Very upbeat, grab your coffee and briefcase in the morning (and try to change the world) type song
This was the graduation song for the class of 1992 for Sidney High School in Sidney Nebraska along with Van Halen 316. Joe Cabela was in the class of 1992 his parents owned Cabela's outdoor retail store.
I saw Van Hagar in concert while they supported this exact album and they were really good. Ya just gotta keep in mind Sammy has a totally different vibe than David.
different singer, different time, different band.....but still great. From the time I was 10, until the time I was 30, VH entertained me with 12 albums and 3 singers. i love every song on every album, I am still bummed out Eddie is gone, there will never be another like EVH, and all that performed with him, Dave , Sammy, Gary, Alex, Michael, and Wolf deserve some props as well, but EVH was the driving force
@@thorfinsky1427 …. Turns out, Gary was not a good fit. But it is not a bad album.. it is sort of like forgotten VH material… it is in my listening rotation and probably the least familiar album… give it a listen, It is not Dave. Or Sam, but it is Eddie , Al and Michael, and not a bad album 💿
This is another one of those "roll down the car windows and turn up the radio" songs for me. Takes me back to cruising around Troy, Michigan in my Pontiac Grand Am. But, it also makes me think of how this song was used in the Crystal Pepsi commercials LOL. Any of you listeners remember that commercial?
To really do this song full justice you need to watch the official video and read the pop-up comments the band put in the video. Great song. I grew up listening to VH with Dave on lead, but I came to really enjoy VH with Sammy up front much more.
This song highlights to me the Van Halen with Sammy Hagar vice David Lee Roth. Roth left because he wanted VH to be a hard rock band that featured those hard driving screeching guitar riffs and Eddie wanted to take the band into a different area, wanting to incorporate more keyboards, etc., which is what you got with the new VH. The fact that both versions of Van Halen succeeded are a testament to the talent of each of members.
You need to watch the music video for this song! It is iconic and incredible! When I was in HS I was on the drill team and we danced to this song FBA-Florida Band Association!
I was a gymnast, this was the track for my best floor routine. It was such a spectacular song to choreograph to. Till this day, this 😊my go to when I need some inspiration and or a kick in the pants!
4:24 - Eddie switched to using keyboards in a LOT of their songs. As a keyboard player myself, I loved the transition. Literally every band wanted me to join because they all played guitar, base, and drums but nobody could play keyboards well whereas I had mastered it. There are other keyboard heavy songs like "I'll Wait", "Jump", but they used mostly "horn" sounds. This one is straight up piano, but it rocks. Thanks for sharing. Great memories!
As good as this song is, and it's a great song, it just makes me thirsty for a Crystal Pepsi. Glad you both liked it, but yeah, gotta have Eddie's shredding solo. Highly recommend you listen to I'll Wait next!
Thank You guys so much for posting. EVH would have been 68 this past Thursday and I really can’t believe he has been gone for 2 years. VH was my favorite band in High School in the 80’s. I would draw that Classic VH Logo on all my book covers ✝💕
I wish you would of watched the official music video version. I remember this song was on a Super Bowl half time commercial for crystal Pepsi’s official launch
Love this song, one of my faves. I agree with previous comments sayng now that you got to fully take in the song, try to catch the official video next. The message and images were pretty impactful back in the day and still ring true today in many ways.
October. Thursday. That time of day when the Sun is setting, and the city lights start glowing. They all have the same energy...that "on the verge" feeling. This song has that same energy for me. This song teases me with FOMO (fear of missing out), like I just might miss something truly awesome if I'm not paying attention. Watch the actual video when you get the chance.
My boys were 17 & 12. Their first concert was this tourin Buffalo NY and they opened the show with this song! Neat thing is my first rock concert was Van Halen 1982.
