I also have some comments: 1) 7 seat's head moves to the side sometimes. This makes the aerodynamics offset and slows them down at least 30secs/500m. 2) The cox's hat is crooked. This too will upset aerodynamics. 3) She's also wearing a red top, this psychologically destabilises the rowers, slowing them down. 4) There's no blonde rowers which will certainly upset the rowing Nazis among these commenters. (I can't see eye colour but I hear there's some browns and greens in there. Aryan crew fail)
@theSculler my tuppence worth! The boat is bouncing in the desirable direction. They are lifting the boat out the water on the drive. If you look at the stern it does not dip in the water. They're picking it up before driving the legs which at their rating is simply excellent rowing! Their fast hands and bodies off the back allow a controlled slide ratio which mean their not slamming into the front. I would like to see a better piece of rowing at their rating from any crew.
I just have 2 things that could improve them just that tiny bit more that would make them go even faster.I have no idea if the coach posted this or not but here they are: 1) They need to get quicker catches. You can acomplish this by having a little break in the arms when going up the slide and then extend the arms completely and release all pressure on the handles at the catch. This will reduce the catch in the boat to little or none. 2)Try using the "Ferry Man's Finish" ill explain in next cmt
(continued from comment below) and if you listen closely, the coxswain is calling out their splits from the speedcoach of a 1:19 and then a 1:18, when there at a 36, thats a great amount of pulling pressure....i can only imagine what that split is at during the sprint . IDC what anyone says there are fast and flying!!
They are rowing 35-36 strokes per minute and getting nearly even spacing of their puddles(i.e., almost 30-32 ft per stroke.) I call that really flying!
The Ferry Man's Finish if you haven't heard of it is when your arms are comming into the finish and your done pulling with your back, start using the handle to pull yourself back up towards the stern so you get maximum acceleration and the boat runs out very nicely.
Well, here is another serious of comments regarding how good or bad the crew was in this video. They looked good to me. But everyone has their opinion the "crew world". This is wrong, that is wrong, etc. Of course, everyone is still beating up on the coxs. The great thing here is once these rowers enter the real world they will remember the piece where they left the coaches launch behind them. This is what we all share in common -- so we have that going for us -- which is nice!!!!!!!!
they are clearing puddles by over a foot when their rating is at 41 or 42 during their sprint. If you can do that you are flying and you will go faster than the launch. And the launch doesnt go fast anyway bc it doesnt need to. these crews go an average of just under 15 mph, so why would you need a fast launch? lol
I was lucky enough to have my coach get relegated to a v hull starcraft with like a 30hp motor. Took our group a bit to get some timing, but the moment we started to actually row like a college team, we'd leave him in the dust on race pieces. I remember sitting there for 2 minutes waiting for this boat to catch up after we finished our piece. My favorite, however, was the long haul for like 40 minutes and just giving a bit of extra pressure, hoping the boat would start to do the same. Sure enough, as we rounded a big bend, everyone else started to get the same idea. Next thing you know, we pulled away from him. What a great feeling. Just a nice day with the wind hitting you, rounding a bend with that gentle bank and watching the bow of the launch drop back out of view. Edit: we usually ran at around 28 strokes on racing pieces. I think that steady day was 24. Again, we weren't that good, but we got some nice improvement, and seeing us finally outpace that v hull was a great feeling!
It's quick but for like 500 metres maximum because they are just rowing awfully. Slow catch, only connected to the water for about 130 cm but bodies moving as though it were 160 cm. Just sit up and push with the legs
@poiuy0174 i wouldn't say that boat is bouncing too much. the goal is to make the bouncing smooth. it shows connection: your weight is off the seat on the drive - you're pushing hard. during the finish your weight "returns" to the seat and the boat goes down a fractional amount. if you watch the olympic scullers its more obvious to see.
@banana12455 Actually, to all the haters out there, if you mean an Oct then they're illegal for anything above J14 because they're too fast and you can't get insured. If you mean an VIII then only due to river regulations....

IM NO EXPERT! But the Stroke seat is hugely drawing in to his lap. Notice how his blade doesn't stay in the water for the full stroke? and how he doesn't tap down (His oar is being pulled out of the water not being tapped) Oars in the water longer = longer stroke = more meters each stroke= going faster!
@legraudal Are you talking about the lunge from properly times catches that have a pretty amazing amount of power? That boat seems like it clicks pretty damn well. You must've never rowed in a good boat before because fast boats actually do "jump".
Getting weight off the bows immediately by really fast hands and bodies over from the finish, picking up the boat before the stern dips, driving the boat out of the water on leg drive....truly a great piece of rowing!! A that rating as well!!.......Amazing!! Acceleration on leg drive is superb! If I was being at all critical I would say Stroke is snatching at the catch a little compared to others and using shoulders too much...no wonder he's quite big! Well done coach! Holy smokes indeed!!
hahaha, watching this got my heart racing sooo fast. if I had any critique there was alot of bobbing in the bow (the deck diggs into the water a bit too much). While that seems like an asshole comment, I promise I'm not trolling, the Cal Bears lost to washington in 2008 or 09 because they weren't controlling their weight at the finish. Awesome piece though!
