Read what St Ignatius of Antioch (110 AD) has to say about the Eucharist being the true body and blood of Jesus (not symbolic) and those who abstain from it. He was taught by John the Apostle so he is a reliable source. Jesus said unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man you have no life within you. The Eucharist is a terrible thing to lack.

@@rsmith5244 I have read it. I believe Christ is truly present when I celebrate the Lord’s Supper. I just don’t use transubstantiation to explain how that happens. I do not believe that Ignatius defined real presence using transubstantiation. Transubstantiation as a way to explain the real presence did not yet exist in Ignatius’ life time. Ignatius’ understanding of the real presence may have been closer to the Lutheran view. The three major branches of historic Protestantism (Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed) all teach some form of real presence. All believe that we feed upon Christ in the Eucharist. None use transubstantiation to explain how that happens.

@@paulsmallwood1484 Being a disciple of John the Apostle Ignatius of Antioch would have had the true understanding of the real presence, just as Jesus Himself taught. Jesus let those who didn't believe what He said about the Eucharist truly being His body and blood, real flesh and blood, walk away. I would take the word of Jesus then, if that of the beloved disciple is still not worthy of belief. It would take time to give transubstantiation a name so I wouldn't be hung up on that. I don't have to understand how the bread and wine is changed into Jesus' body and blood, I just believe what Jesus said.
