Ex-Protestant here. The Blessed Mother led me to the Catholic Church through the miracle of Fatima! A bit of a testimony, but that's what happened! As a Protestant and I am speaking respectfully this is a reason why this conception comes about and is common. It's because of all the images of Mary that fill Catholic Churches. Statues, icons, pictures. Prayers invoking Mary herself. It's easy to see why this question gets asked. I would ask respectfully at what point does the line between veneration and worship get drawn? At what point should one be concerned about overly focusing on Mary and not the Lord Himself? I will honestly say that in Protestant churches sometimes Mary dosen't get the honest respect and adoration she should be given. But I think even Mary herself would not want her children overly focusing on her instead of Her precious Son. I feel that there is a dangerous line between adoration and idolatry or as was pointed out in this video worshipping the creature instead of the creator. This is something I think every Christian should ponder and reflect upon.

@@user-ki2vh1uc5kI can have repect for Mary birthing HER SAVIOUR BECAUSE SHE WAS A SINNER LIKE ALL OF US and only JESUS saved her and the rest of us from HELL. Only 2 MEN in the bible ever walked with God. So you're trying to tell me that two men who God took in their bodily form alive were less worthy than Mary? She was greater than THEM? WRONG. To wlak with God means YOU DO NOT DIE. They never tasted death, but MARY did. I think she was absolutely blessed, but I would NEVER EVER PRAY TO HER EVER. She is UNWORTHY. I will NEVER WORSHIP ANYONE OTHER THAN JESUS CHRIST, GOD, AND HOLY SPIRIT. THE GODHEAD. Mary has no part in that. To pray to is to worship.

@ruukibane301 Mary did not suffer any residual effects from original sin, as her soul contained no stain from it. Though our souls are washed clean from original sin in Baptism, Mary’s soul was created immaculate at the moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. Mary’s body was to be the new tabernacle holding our very God. She needed to be a sinless vessel for this to occur. All of Heaven understood Mary to be immaculate, which is why Gabriel said to her, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” (Lk 1:28) Mary was already “full of grace” - filled to the brim, possessing grace in full measure. God was with her. All the graces that Mary and every Christian receives are given to us due to the merits of Jesus’ atoning Death and Resurrection, but Mary received her special grace ahead of time - indeed, in anticipation of her fiat, her “yes” to God to becoming the Mother of Our Savior.

Most of what you write is based on assumptions, in my opinion. I would recommend sitting down and watching a Holy Mass on RU-vid. We have endless Masses around the world every day! If we think we can love St.Mary more than Jesus does, then that's our problem based on thoughts rather than works, and Jesus loves us so much that He gives us His Mother as ours too.

I want to be a Catholic. I am always looking for ways to cross into the convictions on the Catholic side. I look at Catholic theology and say, I agree. Then a priest will pray to Mary for protection, that her "mantle will cover" or something. Or, I'll look at a church in Latin America where the veneration is clearly much more. So, there's the doctrine and then there's the empowered practices that go contrary to it, either by bad catechesis or something like competitive (with Protestants) clerical entitlement. I am absolutely on board with Mary being the beloved means to Jesus. And, I very much appreciate the spirit of humility and willing instruction in this vid.
@jimnewl
@jimnewl 4 месяца назад
If a priest prays to Mary for protection, what he's praying for is that she ask her Son to protect us. Likewise, if someone prays that her mantle cover us, what they're praying for is that the mantle of her holiness be cast over us by interceding for us. (Presumably, that's what they're praying for, although it's not impossible that some misguided person somewhere may pray to Mary as a god--i.e. as a being with the power to direct providence or to save souls. If so, that's idolatrous and not only objectionable, but mortally sinful according to the Catholic Faith. But in general, Catholics understand perfectly well what they are doing when they pray to Mary, even if it looks sketchy to those who don't quite grasp the distinction between intercessory petition and direct petition.)
@AndrewKendall71
@AndrewKendall71 4 месяца назад
@@jimnewl That's kind of exactly an example of my critique. I can agree with appealing to Mary for intercession. Makes sense I guess. But, if a priest prays that Mary use her power of protection to cover the church... that IS something more. If it's not, where is the catechesis or teaching in that moment to prevent the weaker brother from assuming that she has divine power herself? As for her being powerful to direct providence or save souls, the same goes. I hear it all the time. She is routinely regarded officially as co-mediatrix of saving grace with Christ! And that prayers to her will be more convincing to God (affecting providence) via Christ because "he cannot resist his mother." This is out of bounds... according to the GOSPEL. And so, whether in the doctrines/dogmas or not, this is common. And from priests and bishops.
@chidmania8485
@chidmania8485 4 месяца назад
@@AndrewKendall71do you know ANY Catholic, weak or otherwise, who for the reasons you give, worship Mary? I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any evidence to support your concerns. The point I'm making is that from the get-go, it is painstakingly hammered into Catholics that Mary is not to be worshipped and the very great majority of Catholics are instinctively averse to such a practice. In my country, for instance, where there's a lot of political and economic corruption of which many Catholics, Protestants and Moslems are equally complicit, there's also rampant religiosity on all sides. In this case, you find quite a number of Christians, Catholics and Protestants alike, resorting to pagan witch doctors for charms, protection, etc. I bring this up to drive home my point: while the Catholics here are evidently sinning by idolatry, it still never gets into their head to worship Mary. It just doesn't. That's how much the Church has drilled that into us. Having said that, if you wish to enter the Church, look to what she teaches in her official documents, not what you may find her lay people, priests and even bishops doing. Come in, follow the true/official teachings of the church and leave those who are straying from it. Or witness to them if you prefer. Cheers.

As a Catholic we pray "with Mary" As Mary prays in the great magnigicat so should we imitate her.. "my soul proclaims the greatness of my Lord". God chose Mary to be Mother of his Son, she was chosen by God, Fulton Sheen said that Mary was by the power of the Holy Spirit Mary was "the first to recieve Jesus body, blood soul and Divinity in her womb" Mary was the first Tabernacle of Jesus the model for us to recieve Jesus. In the Eucharistic prayer at mass we pray "with Mary, the Angels, Martyrs and Saints we give all honour and praise and Glory to God. Mary is Queen of Heaven and Earth and leads us all in praise and thanksgiving before the throne of God. Mary Mother of the Holy Eucharist pray for us. Ave Maria 🙏

@@TasteandSeePs34 It is you who deny it. The particular greek term which we translate as 'full of grace' or as the kjv uses the less precise english phrase 'most favored' is used in a particular Greek tense used only one time in the Bible to refer to Mary. The best explanation I have heard, and I don't know where its originally from, is "the problem isn't Catholics 'worship' Mary it's that protestants merely venerate God". This put it into perspective so now whenever I deal with protestants who say that I also now include why its not worship. I reflected on my views pre-conversion and I see I also thought the same way, I didn't "get" worship the way I understand it now and honestly I'd never experienced it before becoming Catholic.

Telling them prayer is different from worship won’t help. Protestants don’t really pray the same way us, or only one type, talking to God. So they see the Rosary as ritualistic prayer, like how muslims pray (which is also how they worship) . Also the secular definition of worship refers to reverence, honouring etc… so we really have to acknowledge that we are imposing a uniquely Catholic definition of worship into the conversation, not the other way around. We know that worship to us means the mass and reverence or honour of only one god. Honestly I don’t think there is anyway to get through a conversation with a non catholic about this except to always acknowledge that , we don’t define worship the same way as the dictionary/commonly understood meaning … and then explain our various practices and explaining that the mass is how we worship and the rest are other parts of our faith tradition instead of just ignoring that their definition of worship is actually the standard one in the culture….

PRAYER AND WORSHIP ARE THE SAME THING. Do you pray to other people? Do you. No because they are unworthy. You pray to something WORTH WORSHIPPING. ie GOD, JESUS, THE HOLY SPIRIT. ALL THE SAME THING. By praying to Mary or the Saints who did not precede Jesus Christ (he existed before mary and always has) you are basically saying they are more worthy or just as WORTHY A JESUS, GOD OR THE HOLY SPIRIT. To pray to something is to WORSHIP IT. READ THE DANG BIBLE there are MANY instances where people worship other gods, sacrifice to them and PRAY TO THEM.

If she mother of God, that mean she was before God?
@iggyantioch
@iggyantioch 4 месяца назад
If she's not then the incarnation has no value. She bore the second person of the Trinity incarnate. The word became flesh and dwelt among us. This is why it's necessary for her to be MOG. Otherwise it opens up the faith to heresy. Luke 1:43 (RSV) And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord (kurios) should come to me? John 20:28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord (kurios) and my God (theos)!” “Lord (kurios) God (theos)”: Lk 1:6, 32, 68; 4:8, 12; 10:27; 20:37. Therefore, “Lord (kurios) equals God (theos). Jesus is called both in John 20:28. Mary is mother of the Lord (Lk 1:43). Therefore, she is the mother of God, since Lord=God. Case closed. Moreover, we don’t say of mothers that they are the mother of their child’s body, but of the child, and the child has a body and a soul. They didn’t create the soul; God did. The Holy Spirit has led me on a journey to understand Catholicism. Previously, I was anti-Catholic but not because of any research I had done but rather because of what other protestants had said about Catholicism. One day I woke up completely open to looking into the faith tradition and giving it a fair shake. After reading numerous books, looking into a fair swath of Catholic apologetics and prayer. I'm closer than ever to converting. I kindly ask that all of you keep me in your prayers. ❤

The issue is Protestants don't understand the word "Worship". If they understood that it was founded in the 1200s, so it is a new word unlike the ones Catholics use about worship. It is Middle English worshipped, from Old English worðscip, wurðscip (Anglian), weorðscipe (West Saxon) "condition of being worthy, dignity, glory, distinction, honor, renown," from weorð "worthy" (see worth) + -scipe (see -ship).

Amen. A lot of that is because they don't actually worship God. (I'm going to presume you're talking mainly about Protestants here.) Protestants call listening to sermons or doing Bible Study "worship." Their Sunday "worship services" (depending upon the particular brand of Protestant) tend to be just that, listening. Worshiping for the Protestant essentially comes down to thinking about God, and even those who engage in physical rituals do so in a merely "symbolic" way, whereby they insist and make clear to God that they are not actually offering him anything of substance. Not so for Catholics, who are moved to offer more than our ears to God. We wish to offer him, by our own best effort, the greatest gift we have to give--his own Son--according to the very method his Son himself provided for us: a series of acts involving our whole persons and not simply our ears (e.g. taking the bread, blessing it, breaking it, eating it, etc.). Every Mass is this solemn act of giving, simply for love of him, the greatest of all gifts to the Father. There is and can be nothing more beautiful in all of Creation than that.

I appreciate your tone in this video, acknowledging the difficulties Protestants have with the Marian dogmas and even acknowledging some abuse and misunderstanding of those doctrines in some Catholics. It has been my personal experience that I find very nuanced and careful catholics online and on RU-vid making the distinction between worship and veneration, making the distinction between praying through and praying to. But I find less of those distinctions in popular level Catholics and more of a ritual-based say my “hail Mary’s” and I’ll be fine. With that said, I have two genuine questions/statements, and please don’t take these as “gotcha questions” just real, sincere questions. There may be some secondary questions within the main two. 1. Is Mary the ONLY avenue to Jesus? In this video you say several times that we get to Jesus through Mary, or she leads us to him, or she is a shortcut to Him. Does one have to go through Mary to get to Jesus? Why does anyone have to, or choose to, go to Jesus through anyone else? It seems like Jesus is the Avenue to the father, He is the Godman, He is the mediator, He is the bridge between God and man. It’s unclear to me why we would need another bridge to get Him. I understand we are His ambassadors, and we have been given a ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5) but that does not necessitate another mediation, simply we are representatives of that mediation. It seems like the Catholic system has built an unnecessary bridge between man and Christ that Mary spans. Why? 2. Just being very honest, I simply don’t understand the claim of “devotion to Mary doesn’t detract from devotion to Christ.” We are all given 24 hours in a day. If I spend 8 hours sleeping, I cannot possibly spend 20 hours working. It’s a simple delegation of resources. If I spend 1 hour devoting myself to Mary, I have lost an hour to devote myself to Christ. One popes motto “all to Mary”, or something of the sorts, seems to indicate, in my mind, that his “all” is being given to Mary and thus not to Christ. If I say “I’m all yours” to my wife, that means I am exclusively hers, no other women can have me. Help me to understand how devotion to Mary does not detract from devotion to Christ. Furthermore, help me understand why I should have devotion to a creature, when I could just be giving my devotion to the Creator. Lastly, maybe I fibbed when I said 2 main questions. “No one can love Mary more than Jesus does.” Is really a non starter for me. That’s like saying the sky is blue. I can’t love my wife more than Jesus does. No one can love anyone more than Jesus does. But that doesn’t mean that our love for someone cannot get in the way of our love for Christ. I’m reminded of Christ’s words of (paraphrasing) “hating” your brother and sisters and mother… I can surely love too much, if I have more devotion to anything more than I have to Jesus, that thing has become an idol, family included. God bless. Looking forward to hearing responses in good faith, please.

I'm glad you're willing to explain things and have an understanding of non-Catholic perspectives. What I really want to understand is the "why"? Do Catholics believe we do not have a direct connection to the Father through Jesus? And if they do then why do we need to pray to Mary or the Saints?

We Do have a direct connection to the Father. We do pray directly to the Father, through Jesus. We encourage you to do so, those who have been properly baptized. Hi Nester I have one question, why didnt Jesus or any of His disciples mention about reaching out to Jesus through Mary after her earthly abode. It is not mentioned in the Bible even once that Mary after her death will mediate for humans on the earth. Jesus while on the cross, said to the thief that he would be with paradise, never said to Mary about her ascension, which the Catholics celebrate as Assumption. I honor Mary for her unmatched obedience to God. However, it is difficult to accept immaculate conception, virginity of Mary after the birth of Christ, and the Assumption.

Please know that you do not have to and cannot go to Mary for anything. This will be so hard to hear but in the Catholic Church Mary is just a replacement for the pagan goddess Isis/Semerimas. The theology is identical but is absolutely forbidden in scripture which expressly forbids contacting the dead - ALL dead for any reason. Jesus Himself said there were none born of women greater than John the Baptist, including Mary, yet even John is not to be prayed to or adored in any way. Mary adoration is a religion steeped in mystery replacement of Christian names to pagan practices. You must come out of that and follow Jesus alone through the obedience of faith to be saved.

Jesus is both God and Mediator because he is one with the Father. Jesus came from the womb of Mary, his mother that is why Mary can mediate between The Lord Jesus and the faithful. Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant, the woman of revelation, the Gebirah-Queen Mother and the daughter of Zion that is why we pray for her intercession and protection because she leads you to the real Jesus of the Trinity. Intercessory prayers are instructed by St. Paul in 1 TIMOTHY 2:1. What does EPHESIANS 6:18 says? MAKING SUPPLICATION FOR ALL THE SAINTS ! Mary is not just a saint, she is the Ark of the New Covenant, The NT Gebirah-Queen Mother, Daughter of Zion and the woman of revelation that is why we pray for her protection and intercession. SUPPLICATION (DEFINITION) - The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly. EPHESIANS 6:18 Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, LUKE 1:28 HAIL FULL OF GRACE ROMANS 16:6 Salute Mary, who hath laboured much among you. PHILIPPIANS 4:21 Salute ye every saint in Christ Jesus. Saints and angels in heaven interceding for us in REVELATION 4, 5, 6, 8. "Mediator" is Christ alone in one sense. As intercessors all members are " mediators". according to Catholicism and Scripture: 1- The Church is the body of Christ 2- There is only one body of Christ, not one on earth and another one in heaven. 3- Death does not separate the members of the body. 4- Christians are bound by the Law of Christ to love and pray for one another.
