A lot of people have been asking me what books I use for reference when studying up on cocktails, their culture and history. This is a huge topic for me because, if I'm being 100% honest I read every cocktail book I can get my hands on. Every. One. That being said, I thought it might be helpful to you guys if I took you through some of the contemporary books I use and find useful

A fun but critical part of the work behind a good cocktail, is the research. A very good episode. Thanks.

Hi, this was extremely helpful as always. What are your thoughts on making cocktails without the hard liquor like "Whisky, Rum, Gin" etc. We have the challenge to create good wines with just Wine & Beer (because of not having a hard liquor licence). Any suggestions and thoughts?. Thanks a bunch!

Have a copy of the Dead Rabbit book, its awesome! They cover lots of time periods 19th 20th century, and share historic bits and for a history nut like me, thats awesome! These invalid drinks in the book were originally for people that were sick and most of them were beer based, and Founders porter is in the porter sangaree from the Jerry Thomas Bon Vivant's guide from 1862. They should open up a bar on Mackinac Island, the only place where horses and carriages are still used and where the Grand Hotel is!

There are a few different ways. Liking and leaving great comments helps us a lot to be honest, and watching the videos helps. We have a Patreon which offers various subscription tiers which helps us offset the cost of production. You can find that here: www.patreon.com/theeducatedbarfly and also using the affiliate links to the books I talk about in this video helps us because we get a small kickback on sales and that all gets put back into the show.

Thanks so much for these great resources! Two Questions: 1. What are the main differences between "the flavor bible" and "the flavor matrix"? (I see they are by different authors, is there a lot of overlap?) 2. Which of Beachbum Berry's books are more recipe-centric, and which are more history centric? (It looks like Potions, and Sippin' have history+some recipes, while "Remixed" and the books it summarizes are recipe heavy, but I'm not sure if I'm right because the descriptions of these books on the internet are lacking)
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 5 лет назад
Aj Beckner the flavor bible is like an encyclopedia of flavor buddies whereas the Flavor Matrix is a very scientific approach which really approaches like flavors by breaking down their molecules. The must have Beachbum book is Sippin Safari but also remixed and the grog log. If you get those then you pretty much have it all

Hi, I hope you still answer old comments on your videos :) I just bought the dead rabbit cocktail book and have a question. The tinctures they do are always made with one aroma giving ingredient, water and everclear. Since I’m from germany I don’t really know which everclear I should buy or if I can take something else because it is available in different ABV. The book doesnt say anything about that I belive. Keep it up! Your videos really got better and better over the years! Maybe you could do a new "book" video for your beguinner series you wanted to start.

Death & Co has also one more feature - it is so beautifully made, it is not only just a pleasure to look through it, but also it has good presentation on the shelf as well. Recently I have bouth Death & Co, Dead Rabit and Savoy Coctail Book - but this one I assume will be discussed in Vol 2 of this video. Just one question, isn't "Liquid Intelligence" a little bit too scientific book for home/amature bartenders? That such people will not gain much from this book? I have not seen it so would like to hear what you think.
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 5 лет назад
Mateusz Wnuk-Lipiński no on the contrary Liquid intelligence demystifies the science of cocktails and gives someone a deeper understanding of how everything works. There is some stuff that is expensive and unattainable even for myself as a professional bartender but 90% of the book is useful and informative and one can easily make most recipes. It has an overview of expensive equipment but often offers hacks on how to get around it. It is a Must read for anyone very interested in cocktails

To get started I have bought Jeffrey Morgenthaler's "The Bar Book" since this claims to be somewhat of the first book on technique. Now I need a companion book that is no technique, no history, just recipes. A comprehensive list of cocktails everyone should know how to make but really fine tuned to get the ratios just right. As a beginner I need that reference as I do not have them in my head and I need the correct ratios so that the actual star of the drink shines, not the sugar, citrus, bitters, or whatever. Extra points if the book is not trying to push the envelope with home made syrups and tinctures. Even better if it recommends specific spirits. I want to lay a solid foundation before I get experimental. I want to be able to craft up solid cocktails even with a limited bar at someone else's place. Any recommendations folks?

I understand this is two years old. The closest thing I can think of is the encyclopaedia of cocktails. Got over 1000 different cocktails in there. There is a little bit of history but mostly cocktails.

What happened to the bitters video?
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 5 лет назад
I took it down because it was admittedly a bit of a mess. I want another shot a redoing it. It was an episode i was dreading because we hadn't perfected a way of shooting and editing it yet. I watched it a couple times and it annoyed me how many times i said flavor, flavoring or flavoring element. I can do better :)

@@TheEducatedBarfly It would be sweet if the bitters episode was more like this video. Offer the most essential bitters, some more obscure bitters and when/how to use them, good brands, bad brands etc
@TheEducatedBarfly
@TheEducatedBarfly 5 лет назад
Scott Seymour what I’d like to do is a short (concise) history, what bitters are, how to use them and which ones I use. I have never run into a “bad” brand house early but there are some essential ones everyone need me to have. Thank you for the input! I appreciate it!
