Home built roofing shingle lift

Designed and built this shingle/material/tool lift to use when helping my Dad roof his house to get around the worst part of roofing -- carrying shingles up the ladder. Designed in Autodesk Inventor using some old elevator roller guides and hatch door rollers as pulleys (both ball bearings). It is roped 2:1 so the person pulling has to walk double the lifting height, but at half the effort. The rope was 3/8" poly rope rated at around 250 lbs so 2:1 the rope would suggest 500 lb capacity. As an engineer, I wouldn't mind testing it with some decent weight, but my Dad's neighbor already mentioned using it in August on his roofing project so no need to break it:) Side rails were combination of 3 16' 2x4's cut down to about 15'.

Old or not, you will go broke roofing at this pace. It's faster to run them up a ladder than using this contraption!

I made a similar hoist for a roofing job I'm having done. Mine uses the rails of a ladder, and I may install a ratchet mechanism to keep the load from sliding back down. I'll probably post a video when it's completed and working. Good idea!

Nice and economical. Forklifts and shingle delivery are easier obviously. I don't think I would have just put ladders and this lift right on the gutters. Thanks for sharing.

It looks simple but something like that would be a full weekend project, at least. Making the plans or figuring out how its all going to come together, finding/buying the parts, and building it.

@iowawrench
@iowawrench 10 лет назад
The only thing to consider with adding additional pulleys is how far you have to walk and how that effects "cycle time". It's a balance. I would consider going 1:1 actually to cut down on the walking distance. Have 2 guys load 2 bundles on the ground, both pull, have them to the top quick, 2 guys unload quick, repeat. Might have been faster with the 4 guys we had. It wasn't a race though and everyone appreciated skipping the carrying-up-the-ladder part of the job. Much safer.
@MolloRelax
@MolloRelax 3 года назад
it is a 3 men operation...2 guys loading 2 bundles ,1 guy riding up with the bundles being pulled up by the 2 guys that loaded them,and the same guy unloading on top and coming back down with the lift...repeat while rotating the guys

Good catch. Turns out camera man (me) wasn't helping pull on the rope. We were doing 2 and 3 bundles at a time before I decided to quit helping to catch the last of the bundles on their way up on video. One thing to note, I designed it too tall. You had to lift the bundles to about chin level at the top to get them over the top of the "track". If you don't think that's tiring, you haven't been anywhere near a shingle job:)

all you need to do is put more angle from ground to roof edge, but make sure to anchor down the bottom of the ladder, so it does not follow you to the street when you start pulling on the rope...lol
@iowawrench
@iowawrench 3 года назад
@@MolloRelax there were two 1/2" dia steel rods through 1/2" holes in the base 4x4 driven into the ground anchoring the bottom
@MolloRelax
@MolloRelax 3 года назад
@@iowawrench Ok I understand...but I mean....if you said the height of the latter was too much......the guys had to lift the bundles at shoulder level.....if you were to increase the angle of the ladder until just the top of it leans against the roof edge, it would have been easier for the guys to handle those bundles...And probably easier for you too, to pull the cable towards the street..It's a really nice set-up though

There's a design where a guy built one that's basically 2 of these tied together, then loads one side with shingles, and uses himself as a counterweight on the other, using his own body weight to lift the shingles.
