Great ideas! I just can't do hooks........gets my OCD in a twist. 😅 Thankfully, I have a coat closet in my entry.

Tell me suggestions for the fact that most of our guests come into our garage down our back hallway. We have a wonderful front entrance, but most people come through the garage. Help!❤

Look at her advice for a tiny, narrow entry, especially that Ikea shoe rack. You might want to use the area in the garage immediately next to the entry door to either incorporate some of your entry elements or echo elements of your "main" entrance.

The only space in our entry is for a picture on the wall. No room for a shallow shelf and hooks even could get caught on when coming in. We have a small coat closet that I’ve wondered about turning into a built-in but we need the storage for coats and shoes. I wouldn’t want an open built-in to be cluttered with multiple items that are currently behind the door.

Don't forget you can use the back of the entry door if you don't have any other space. You can also put a mirror on it. Yes, provide a place for guests to put belongings and to remove their shoes, like a stool or chair. And have a shoehorn handy.

1) know your architecture. flashback: i have a mcm condo & was criticized by someone who has a no style 5 year old house that was a spec home, she didnt choose anything, yet criticized me for using mcm colors & furnishings to go with my architecture. "oh you mean that crap our parents had?" My reply "some of it was good". We no longer speak for many reasons 🤣🤣

What if you have no entry at all because you have gone open plan with one big space that shows the kitchen? A home should introduce itself and not rush up to you like an untrained puppy. @2:38, not keen on that. If you have the space, build a cupboard with doors. IKEA have lots of units that can be adapted with just a little bit of work and you can even make it so that nobody knows.

I just moved into a new apartment and the entry is a 7ft hallway (a little more than 3ft before you get a door on either side) AND it's only 32 inches wide!! I'm worried if I put in a floating shelf, I would take it out when I'm bringing in groceries.

One series of books you should read are Sarah Susanka's The Not So Big House (there are about 5 books in the series). She talks about how to design a smaller but more functional home, and what features to include in each space (like the seating, mirrors, and key shelf you mention for an entryway, etc).

What if you have a decent entry but have NO natural light? OI have a condo with the required door that I cannot change out. I definitely do not want the clutter of hooks and coat hangers in my entry. My husband is a collector/stuffer and he would have that area stuffed with his coats, hats and badly cluttered. (We have a coat closet around corner.) I have a large flat wall mirror on one side (about half of the wall.) I have a bench (we are older and need a place to sit down to put our shoes. (This bench also serves as a place where our guests can place purses and coats.) We have light sconces on one wall and a table lamp on a small square vintage table as well next to the bench. The opposite side of the entry is our laundry room door and where our furnace draws in air so no available space there. This room had white 3/4 high board and batten paneling with yellow paint on top and this entry is still dark!!

Draw room on paper to scale and cut out paper furniture pieces to scale before you move any furniture. Allow 36” to 48” paths to walk

Hi.. i live in a basement apt and my door opens directly into my living room..now what would I do with that?
@LisaHoltDesign
@LisaHoltDesign Год назад
Make a space against the wall on the first landing, whether that’s right at the top or the very bottom of the stairs. ☺️
@marylut6077
@marylut6077 Год назад
Create a 36” walkway by 1) arranging seating so seat backs form the walkway, or 2) use a room divider. Or arrange seating so guests can walk right in and sit down and you take their coats and put them in your BR or your coat closet

...My front door opens directly into my Lounge ( living room area) and I did all kinds of " screens' and a high bench ; Furniture placements, etc to" carve out " an entryway... Eventually... I grew tired of that look. I decided to just work with the space differently... I moved a beautiful console piece that I have ( its about 68" long, has a mirror that goes right to the ceiling) , to the same side where the front door is. That left room for a lovely chair, to be angled slightly, away from the Console . There is a wall basket that is a complimentary shade to the console, that is behind the chair but hung high enough to not impede sitting/ standing up, etc) To be honest. ....it " feels better ".. lighter, and although I wasn't sure at first when I decided to try this arrangement.... it works much better. ...even though I have no adjacent Coat Closet. There are a set of lamps on each end of the Console surface, hooks on the other wall that is a " short wall " since that's where the back of the door lands when it's opened... The hooks are beautiful wrought iron mounted on a piece of wood ,which is mounted on that wall. A lovely umbrella holder completes the area. I prefer having a ' Real Entryway ", and this is the first place I've lived tgat didn't have one , so I made the best of it and did a LOT of Arrangement of Furniture, experimented with screens. Old doors, A nice tall bench.. you name it, lol. Ultimately, it's what " feels best " to you when you open the door and enter into your space. 😊

This is great, Lisa! My entryway is tough. It’s a door (with a second door into my landlord’s property), then a 90° turn, a stairway up, and another 90° turn and suddenly you’re in the kitchen. I have a shoe rack on the bottom of the stairs and coat hooks on the top, but there isn’t much room to put anything, and I worry about either my door or my landlord’s door opening quickly one day and wrecking whatever I put there. Lighting is also not adjustable since there are no outlets and the stairwell lights are motion-activated. Anyway, I’m not too worried about it because I know my guests feel welcomed (after all, they keep coming back!). Thanks for the tips, Lisa!

Lots of great ideas here! Our entryway is a rather large (8ft x 16ft) mudroom space because we live in the country. The style statement is what I'd call "Utilitarian Modern". We have two tall black metal garage units that store outdoor gear/cooking appliances and also serves as a pantry because the kitchen is next to the mudroom. There is a black metal pegboard with hooks and that can moved around for various items (firepit lighters, car keys, gloves). There is a bench with a special carpet that soaks up water from muddy boots. A row of 8 hooks are along the wall for coats/hats/waders/fishing rods. When we have dogs visiting I put out a basket marked "Dog Towels". A lower set of counter height garage cabinets right by the front door is a landing place for unloading groceries etc. For lighting there is a row of inexpensive jelly jar sconces, a design that goes back to the 1930's. The floor is porcelain tile. The materials are inexpensive but durable - it works!
