this is some misinfo that's been spread around, Adam hasn't chosen to compete in any beatbox world championships. And Anthony Ray doing the reaction here has watched all the beatbox world championships, so he would recognize him if he had.

He has a drum solo every concert. Everyone looks forward to this. He is a founder of Home Free with his brother, Chris. He has a sweet tenor voice that he rarely shares solo. He is much beloved by all Home Fries. Thanks for checking his skills out.

Adam specifically learned how to play the drums so that he would be very accurate in imitating the sounds. He does way more than just drums well as I know you are starting to realize. What you don't really know is that he is a VERY accomplished singer with a beautiful voice. Adam is the bomb!!!! Great reaction and totally loved your breakdown. So professional and with an awesome amount of respect for his craft. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

He is NOT only a Beatboxer..he is an INCREDIBLE arranger of music ...singer etc. Case in Point...in Your spare time give a listen/watch to Home Free version of Do You Hear What I Hear" ..arrangement by Adam Rupp. The guys in the group asked him to tone down...ease up on the difficukt intricacies of the harmonies he puts out !!

Home Free is unique in a way that they don't do a whole lot of crazy a cappella tricks. They are a "Vocal Band" and Adam is key in that with his ability to be a human drum kit. Thay are also lucky since 3 guys that can make legitimate bass notes.

Adam Rupp is a big part of why Home Free is what we love. He majored in trumpet in college and is obviously a master of circular breathing. Home Free originally started having Adam beatbox solo onstage because there were a lot of naysayers who said that Home Free was hiding instruments or otherwise faking it. If they use anything live they'll tell you, like the looper they use when doing Man of Constant Sorrow (also how they did the studio version). Hope you look into the other members of Home Free doing solo work or collaborations. Tim (the deep bass you love +5 (count them, five) octave range), Austin (the high tenor with the red beard) and Chance (warm smoky baritone/bass voice) all do a lot of solo and collaboration work. Rob (big guy with big beard, lyric tenor) did a VERY unusual thing recently with Austin: Nessun Dorma. Way way outside your interest most likely (as it was for me; not an opera fan) but truly amazing Opera Rob. I'd have to write a book here to detail all the solo/collaboration work that Tim and Austin have had, and at least a couple of chapters dedicated to Chance.

Your knowledge and experience with beatboxing brought extra value to your reaction. I didn't mind that you could analyze the routines and explain them to us in ways we may not have heard before. Adam is, indeed, skilled and talented. His sense of rhythm is impressive on its own, and invaluable to Home Free's tight harmonies. He does occasionally get spotlighted solos in the group's performances. And, yes, Adam has recently celebrated his 40th birthday, 20 years with HF. I may not be a HUGE Rap fan, but am a big fan of your beautiful bass voice. Just keep talking -- your reactions are great.

Adam did the arrangement for their cover of "Do You Hear What I Hear" where he's front and center. Even though it's a Christmas song it's still in my top 2 favorites by Home Free. They do have songs where he shines and he is certainly noticed by Home Free fans. Plus he does a solo at every concert. Also, you have to remember that Adam is not a competitor of any beatboxing championships or even in that scene. He's a beatboxer for an A cappella band and you are comparing him the the best in the world. That's pretty impressive (as you said). I really appreciated your analysis of his performance coming from a technical perspective. Thx for the video!

Adam , the beat boxer, is the glue that holds everything together . Love Adam Rupp & his insane talent. He is the best out there in my opinion. He simulates the sounds of a drum perfectly. Many drummers have commented on how good he is. He sounds so realistic. His breath control must be crazy. I heard he makes the sounds both while inhaling & exhaling. This was a few years ago & hard to believe but he is even better now. Adam is the glue that holds Home Free together. He is their secret weapon which other a cappella groups can't match.

Adam does a solo in every Home Free show. The guys are great about changing lead singers and giving Adam the solo so that everyone is showcased. When they decide to do a song, each one sings a little of the lead to see who would be best for that song. I have seen them in concert many times and they are amazing.

The thing with Adam is when he takes up something that interests him, he is all in. No half way with him. So when he and his brother started Home Free in the year 2000, Adam was all in on everything. He drove his college roommate nuts with the beatboxing sounds. He also did a huge amount of work in the bookings as well. He not only is an accomplished trumpet player, but he also actually plays drums and bass guitar (I honestly think he can play more but I'm not certain.) He has helped figure out the lights for the shows and is an amazing music arranger. And his intense focus on interests doesn't stop there. He has a massive collection of figures for D&D campaigns that he runs as Dungeon Master. No, Adam never does anything half way. And we Home Fries know it very well.
@lrfcowper
@lrfcowper Год назад
Home Free absolutely would not exist without Adam. In their early years, he was the one who got all their gigs, handled their budget, connected them with cruise and concert series management, and talked then into sticking it out when everyone else wanted to throw in the towel. His college degree is in trumpet, but he also plays guitar, bass guitar, piano, keys, and "anything else the band needed" (this was when he was in the worship band at his church). He infamously drove his college roommate to move out by his obsessive practicing of a sound till he got it perfect. He's never had vocal training like the other guys, so he's uncomfortable singing lead, but if you find a post-pandemic drum solo, you'll find he layers dozens of layers of singing and vocal percussion using a looper in the first part of his drum solo. It's fantastic.

So you heard rumors that are not true! Adam has never competed in Beatbox Championships nor does he ever have a desire or need to. He has won a couple of harmony sweepstakes best vocal percussionist awards back in the day (one was honorary just for him) and a couple best overall beatboxer awards from the a cappella world.

I keep hearing this rumor about Adam, and no offense to his amazing skills, but participating in beatbox world championships isn’t something he’s chosen to do (they’re all online to watch). I think it might be because of a badly formatted article that discusses him and a few other beatboxers but isn’t clear when it switches to someone else. I think it mentions Joel Turner winning in two different categories, solo and crew.

It's precisely your expertise that people are looking for. So don't hold back on "analysis." I really like that you pointed out his rhythm control. I think he has an extraordinary sense of rhythm. This is especially highlighted in his more recent (2021) EDM-style performance in Sioux City, Iowa. (LtKernelPanic channel). The video you looked at today is from 2017. It's very interesting to see what he's doing more recently -- and how the rhythm is manifest in his bodily movements. (He's also a great dancer, by the way.)

While he's not comfortable taking the lead on songs where they don't need a beatboxer Adam has a beautiful voice and Tim was right when he said in a interview that Adam is the magic of Home Free!!! He seems to know exactly what sounds to add to a song and where and he's taught the others some beatboxing so they can perform certain songs like 9 to 5 live and it's fabulous (even though I like the video best). Adam just continues to hone his craft and always take it up a level. Also he just turned 41

If you haven't yet seen them check out their 9 to 5 videos. I know your interest seems to be beatboxing first but I always recommend their video for Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 with the office setting first. Sort of a good background for the 2 versions of 9 to 5 + Beatboxing Breakdown which is them on stage during a show, recorded from the audience. All five members take turns beatboxing, sort of a 2 by 2 battle. I prefer the first one, with Chris Rupp, only because I think the stage setup and lighting was better. That's on the venue, not the performers. The second one, with Chance instead of Chris, sounds just as fantastic.

He actually learned to play drums, that's why his movements are what an actual drummer would be doing. He is insanely skilled. And on the rare occasions that he DOES sing, he has a beautiful sweet voice. I think he's a little self-conscious because he's not professionally trained like the others.

Finally, a real analysis of Adam's beat boxing skills! I've seen drummers react to Adam (and they were impressed how much Adam acts and sounds like a drummer), but not by someone as knowledgeable as you about beat boxing. Adam received a degree in trumpet performance. His brother Chris suggested that Adam learn beat boxing for their a capella group they just formed for a church talent show. That was Dec 2000, and the talent show was in Jan 2001. Hence, Home Free was born.

It's really interesting to hear someone analyse this from an experienced beat-boxer's perspective. Adam taught himself to beat-box after he, his brother and a school friend first started Home Free, back in 2000, and his emphasis has always been on being the backbone of the group. That said, he can be quite the showman with his solos, and a lot of us have learnt about beat-boxing by following what he does, but if he makes you think that's a drumkit or soundboard in the back of a HF track, he's succeeded.

Home Free often introduces Adam as either the "heart and pulse" of the band or as a "freak of nature". Don't forget that this was recorded on a cell 'phone so the sound wouldn't be as good as it was live. His versatility is truly astonishing. Whether playing 'drums' or a 'no-monica' or even castanets or a DJ, he's incomparable. Curiously for an acapella band, they all can play instruments - and Adam plays drums, trumpet and seemingly anything else he turns his hand to. Thanks for playing this & your comments.

Part of his breath control comes from the fact that his college degree is in trumpet performance. I think one of his best performances on a Home Free song is on Listen to the Music. I saw them in concert a few months ago and his solo was breathtaking. Very different from this since he now uses a looper so he can harmonize with himself over the drum line.

When I was in the marching band in high school I was always impressed by the percussion section! I was proud of myself when I could just play the song while following my choreography on the field! And that was just playing a song we had practiced enough to be able to play it in our sleep or on autopilot and then adding the actual movement of the field routine. But the percussion section had way more to do than the rest of us so it was impressive

Old school beatbox sound? Maybe it’s because he learned it from VHS tapes on beatboxing back when they started around 2000. Also, bring a trumpet player most likely he can double and triple-tongue pretty well and that probably helps his speed.

He was a percussionist first so he knows the drumkit hands down

Thank you for this reaction - so good to have someone knowledgeable explaining things. Adam surprised us during the Sea Shanty Medley by doing castanets, and then doing a harmonica in Man of Constant Sorrow. He also provides all the high wails in one part of Listen to the Music. In so very many ways he is the absolute heart of Home Free.

Thanks for this. To hear him actually sing and no beatboxing, try 'Helplessly Hoping". An old Crosby Stills and Nash song. Almost requires a moment of silence when it is finished. Thanks again.

9:14 I swear I was just looking up Tom Thum to get the title of one of his videos (whilst watching this one)to recommend him to you, when you mentioned his name! Spooky! 😱 Have you seen his TED talk video where he does a whole jazz band on his own? Love it!

I remember Roxorloops. He was a beast back in the days. If I'm not mistaken, he actually lives in Denmark now. 🇩🇰😊 And yeah. If a comedian is laughing at another comedians show. It's usually because he f'ed someyhing up.

Excellent reaction. Adam amazes me with his skills. Adam competed in Beat box championship. I just recently came across your reactions and am enjoying them, you have a perfect demeanor for this. Thank you for your reactions.

He hasn’t competed in beatbox championships, he has plenty of other accomplishments, please don’t spread false ones around. Most beatbox championships are recorded and put online, we know who competes in them.

Adam has stated that he has never competed nor intends to. He feels no need to prove himself, and between his family and Home Free, he doesn't have the time to compete. He certainly has the skills to compete were he interested in doing so, of that there's no doubt, but he has asked for fans to help stop the spread of misinformation.

You should really watch their cover of Listen to the Music by The Doobie Brothers, Adam has a lot of chance to shine in that one, both in beatboxing and his singing

This was old. There's way better on youtube nowadays, and he's way better, of course. I've seen Homefree live twice now as recently as March this year, and now he uses loops and does some awesome stuff. But yeah, he's very technical and an amazing beat boxer. I'd say one of the best in the business for sure. Just my opinion.
