For the shifter linkage instead of complicated mechanical connections with roads and leavers use cables. 2 cables for the primary shifter, 1 for up, and 1 for down. For the secondary transmission 2 for forwards and backwards, and 2 for left right. The shift lever can be in any orientation, or place the cable will reach. You could even mount them to the seat, so shifters move with the seat. -- I should have read all the other cable suggestions before I posted.

Cables would work for both the primary gearbox and the secondary gearbox. He'd need to use 2 cables for the primary and 4 cables for the secondary. A big advantage of cables is that they allow for customization of the shift pattern to anything the user prefers by simply swapping around the cables. As it stands he's pulling the lever back to gear up (the correct way imo) but with cables it's trivial to have it the other way around if desired. As for the secondary gearbox controls, he could use a heim joint as the pivot for the lever with a + shaped plate on the bottom of the lever connected to the 4 cables. Then have the opposite setup above the transmission translating the movements to the correct pattern by changing the position of the 4 cables. Typically cable systems are not as precise as linkage, but compared to what he has now it would be a massive upgrade. Also, he could do paddle shifters on the steering wheel for the primary gearbox saving space for the secondary gearbox shifter on the tunnel.

you should use push pull cables for both shifters. If you use two cables 90 degrees apart it would make it so you could orient the shifter any way you want
@neonnerd1364

Dont forget, you could add some light tension springs to the limiting straps to pull them in the direction you want them to go when they collapse. Also might want to try to move the jeep trans shifter in front of the other one because if you move the seat all the way forward, you wont be able to reach the jeep trans shifter. That being the one you will probably use the least, would probably be best in front of the other one. Just a personal thought.

Your fab skills are awesome! You should consider using a ~2L 4cyl front wheel drive manual car engine/trans assy. to power your next build. Use the trans output to drive a main jack-shaft, and omit the whole aux gear box. A larger engine would have a much better torque curve to drive buggy + drive r= 1000lbs+ total. You could get enough gear reduction between (trans output) to (jackshaft) ratio, and (jackshaft) to (wheel hubs) ratio. Gear it for a max speed around 80 MPH should provide more than enough gear reduction on the bottom.The car engine would likely have over 2x the torque of almost any bike engine, so it wouldn't have to be way up in RPM's to produce torque.

Power steering possibly? Man I really love this vehicle.

On your chain tensioner, just add another jam nut on the same side as the bolt head is, and that way you have two adjustable jam nuts. Then if you actually need the longer bolt it's there, and just a matter of removing the one extra jam nut if it's necessary. On your linkage add nylon bushings to help with the noise, and take up some of the slop you have with the linkage. Plus it will make for smoother shifts, because it glides better, and reduces some of the raw metal on metal feel you have now

@1one3_Racing
@1one3_Racing 11 месяцев назад
You could move the fulcrum for the shifter higher. It'll shorten the level, reduce weight, shorten throw, make more room for the second shifter and move your linkage higher so it's out of the chain. You could even move the fulcrum forward a little. It means the lever won't be perpendicular in neutral and shift up will be pushing it up and away from you which is a little weird but if it helps with packaging you could live with it. I've driven some vans that have the shifter on the dash and it's not too bad once you get used to it.

For the wiring, get yourself some conduit so you can seal the wiring up in a relatively rigid structure. I've seen it done with amphibious stuff, but even the simplest common setup can benefit from standardized sealed house stuff like conduit sheathing. Awesome work so far. One other minor thing. Weld some strips of aluminium in front of the more exposed and likely bolts to be hit on the underbelly armor. Like right at the bottom, those should definitely have a few pieces to protect the bolts.
@42Goopy42
@42Goopy42 Год назад
Your shifter has a ton of play because of the clearance stack up between each joint. If you make some delrin bushings and reduce the length of the trans mount shifted, the throw of the shifter should decrease. Or switch to cables! Should be way easier to get the throw you want and lighter. The t90 trans might not be good for cables though, those trans have a lot of detent.
