A pro guitar player who gigs in so many different places told me he loves his tube guitar amplifier and totally knows the difference in his tube tone and the tone of his back up solid state amplifier. But he admitted: I know my audience doesn't and could care less. I'm having the same feelings over this emphasis on analogue verses digital summing. I've listened to analogue summing and comparisons by different artists. To put it bluntly: I didn't fall off my chair.
+Jay John Coutts Point well taken. Analog vs digital and the whole analog summing thing will be debated forever Im sure. All I can say from my experiences is that analog, especially using hardware in some from does make a difference to my ears and it does add a little something extra that you simply don't get with digital. Having said that, you certainly don't "NEED" anything that is analog and that alone won't make you a better musician or engineer. I appreciate your point of view
I've only got one piece of gear left to get to complete my summing setup Dave! I'm really looking forward to it. I was looking at the dual unit mode setup guide from Focusrite last night and whew!.... That looks a little daunting. Might throw out a lifeline when I set it all up! Thanks for sharing this video. Thank you Dave, Great video, I didn't have before analog summing staff and I didn't know what it's that for. Till I got one and I did nothing else than I run L/R thru and switch my headphones between Apollo Quad and Dangerous D-Box. My first word was " WOW " It is very easy to say do not make sense to bay one ' till you hear the sound of one. Dave please show us how to connect correct Apollo Quad & D-Box. Very Helpful video. Thank you! I think some of the nuisances you mention, like where your placing your master bus plug-ins, and the configuration of your stems that your actually summing are what us novices are confused about. I was able to work a pretty neat set-up that solved some interface compatibility issues. Im using a Midas M32R with ADAT expansion connected to 2x Apogee Ensembles FWs. There is a klark-teknik AES50 to USB converter that allows you to interface the affordable Apogee Ensemble FW into the M32 and then to MAC or PC with 48 track i/o into Studio One which im mostly just using for recording, but I would like one of those tape emulators, although you still need a basic mac to setup the Apogees. This setup fixes the problems of daisy chaining apogee ensembles as you could do 4x of them if you wanted to. I repurposed an affordable digidesigns adat bridge also for the print track monitoring which ill get back to. On the Summing side, I have a Thermionic Culture Little Red Bustard for Summing the band. This is an unbalanced transformless summing amp and I am bypassing the transformers on the rest of the chain which has Pultecs, LA-2as, DBX162SL with a unified grounding scheme. The two channels go into the analog input in the D-Box. The Vox tracks go into the DBOX Summing Inputs. So there is a hardware setting in the Dbox that allows you to monitor the Sum Bus, and the analog inputs and the digital inputs at once or discreetly essentially turning the Dbox into a 12 channel sum box or you can have a multi summing amp setup allowing different outboard on the band and vocals. I wanted to point this out in case you hadnt already discovered how to use your 2bus lt and Dbox together to get 24 channel staged summing. Im using that ADAT bridge to send an AES-EBU print track from the Midas to the Dbox to monitor the print track which is using plug-ins from the midas console.

Thanks for the great video. I have a question regarding the next step for mastering. Am I correct if I say that you manually have to copy the summed track into the project page and go from there? Any changes made to the file after I have copied into the project has to be done manually again?
Hi Dave thanks for all your info. I hope you can help me with this. I have a dangerous box, Grace M108 preamp to run through a newly acquired Apollo x8p. 2019 Mac mini 32ghz 6 core i7 64RAM. I have racked my brain and cannot rig the summing. Also I believe the Grace preamp has the better converters. I would really appreciate your input.

I tired to use the SL wight he d-box but the d-sub direct outs on the SL didi not work properly. You need to have desecrate outputs in order to use a summing mixer. I still have the SL and use it when I play live.
Dave I realize this video is several Studio One revisions old and pre Pipeline, but has Pipeline influenced your approach to OB analog summing? I don't think it would but I've been recently trying to route and I still end up basically with this same approach.
Great video! I'm using a Soundcraft 22mtk as an interface AND mixer during my sessions. I am creating a print track by setting the print to the main output of my mtk22 (without doing the buss and stem theory). However I am getting a hiss behind my mix. Could you explain? Can I still create the buss and stems and still use my mtk22 or do I need an additional interface? I have a Presonus 16.0.2 I could use as a interface I do believe. Could you please help?! I have been trying to resolve this hiss for weeks I'm mid project and I'm seriously contemplating just mixing in the box I'm getting close to deadline. Thanks in advance!

How do you set it up in the interface software? I just upgraded to a Presonus Studio 192. Having some issues setting it up inside the Universal Controller (interface software). Any pointers?
it should be a "plug & play" set up, especially if you are using Studio One. I would suggest going to the Presonus forum if you are having issues. They have a great community over there.
I use the studio live 32ai. Considering getting into Analog summing and would like to get the dangerous 2busLT. I hope the dB 25 outputs work on that. If not, I am not sure how I will go about doing this. Was curious how you actually added the "stems" in studio one as well as the new input where you are now putting your effects on the far left of the screen. (Not in the song setup section) are the stems just a add bus channel? Last question is do you have to actually record the new final summed mix onto that final stereo track when "mixing down" or do you move into a project like you always have?
justin grannell Hi justin - NO the DB 25 outs on the SL will not work with the Dangerous Music 2bus LT. I have the same set-up and sold my SL mixer in order to use Analog summing. I hope I got this information to you in time before you purchase the 2bus LT. Also, I would condor the D-box before the 2bus LT. Many more features and the same amount of summing as the LT.
Sorry for the million different questions: Doesn't the D-box only give you eight channels of summing as opposed to 16 mono/8 stereo on the LT? If I'm going to do this i was wanting the ability for eight stereo/16 mono. was also looking at some interfaces with thunderbolt instead of firewire. Like the MOTU 16A. Have you heard of that one and is it good? I have been researching this like crazy and cannot seem to get a good grasp on how my signal flow will be. I understand the set up in the recording software sort of but is my signal going out of the computer via FireWire ? And if so into what? four instance is your signal going FireWire out of the computer into your focusrite firewire, then out of that into your D box?
justin grannell Yes the D-box give you 8 mono or 4 stereo channels of summing which is less than the 2-bus LT. However I have found that 8 channels of summing is plenty and the extra feature the D-box offers is worth the limited summing channels. I use a U/A Apollo interface and it's it connected via thunderbolt. Your signal will go out of your interface via the 1/4 inch outputs to the input of the summing amp. Then it of the summing amp into a stereo pair on your interface. If you go to the dangerous music website they have really good diagrams of the signal flow.

Hey David. What really is the purpose of doing audio summing? I guess I am not really seeing any benefits as to why engineers would do this. Does this make the audio richer in quality, or simplify work flow? Forgive my noob curiosity.

Would you be able to explain your theory/reasoning behind your routing such as why create stems to send the signal to the summing box as opposed to just routing your bus there and also why create a separate print track after already having created a track (7-8) to bring back the summed signal? I've had a d-box for 2 years and the thing still eludes me. Lol. What really frustrates me is that the end result doesn't ever sound as good or as wide as when I'm monitoring using the sum button. Good information, but the problem is my sound card is aurora8, that is no VIDEO routing cubase between aurora and dangerous d box Because Aurora don't have a S/PDIF output.. Can u help me
Howdy, I've setup my Dbox using your instructions, and I can see that I'm getting all my Busses properly routed to outputs in my DAW (Studio One). But I can only hear my channels with the "Sum" buttons depressed. When I push in the "Analog" or "DAW" buttons everything goes silent...I'm routing the Dbox to inputs 7/8 and I can see the track routing there. (But I can here the entire mix even if I don't have channel 7/8 monitoring switched "on." Finally, I have added my FX to Channel 7/8 input per your instruction but the FX are not doing anything even though I can see signal flowing to the FX plugins (to test this, I threw a reverb on Input 7/8 and cranked it all the way up...and, well, no reverb...Any thoughts on any of these issues?
