So should they not have to run around the bases? You hit the home run and you just do a little spin wave to the crowd and walk back in the dugout after you hit a home run?

Missing home plate and dropping the football at the 1 yard line are 2 of the most frustrating things to watch
@matthewmurray8570
@matthewmurray8570 2 года назад
They're not comparable. One is an active play, the other is a dead play. When you hit a home run, no one can do anything about it. The ball is gone. You are allowed to dance around the bases, if you please. In football, if you walked the last ten yards, you're going to get tackled - the play is active. To have runners touch every base on a home run is unnecessary - the play is dead. It's a home run. We all know that. Touching the bases doesn't change anything about the play.

You’re right, but it changes a lot of other stuff. They could’ve scored more runs that inning as they were obviously locked in on this dudes FB, or if they were up by 1 going to the bottom of 9th then they would’ve brought in the closer, etc. Idk the specifics of this game, but being tied, and being down by a run will most times change a bunch of coaching decisions. Not only in the 9th, but in the innings prior to that as well. All that being said, Jomboy’s right, it should just be a home run. Don’t even really need to run the bases (although I like that part cause it feels great to run the bases after you went yard with everyone cheering, and it gives the hitter the opportunity to show off).
@jamiecox1685
@jamiecox1685 2 года назад
Yeah, but the whole strategy, emotional outlook and everything is changed if they aren't tied and are trying to make up one run. Heck, there might have even been a different pitcher on the mound going into the ninth, perhaps the closer didn't start the 9th. Cal might score 3 more runs that inning for all we know. The pitch count is changed for thr starting pitcher no matter what. A lot of things change.

Shame on the kid's teammates. The catcher gave it away instantly and obviously, pointing at home plate and yelling for the ump the second he missed home plate. Jomboy, please see this comment: I was at the Georgia Tech vs Kennesaw State game a few weeks ago and a similar situation. The defense must execute the "appeal" process for the umpire crew to make it official. Once the next ball is put in play by the home plate umpire the pitcher must toe the rubber and step off. @glazed6178
@glazed6178 2 года назад
If touching the base is so important why can't he leave the dugout and do it if he missed it? Time is practically unlimited in a HR since there is no race to the base. The point of the home run is that it is a free play right. The opponents can't play the game and stop you from scoring and if it takes you 1 or 5 minutes to run around the bases nobody short of a ref throwing you out can stop you. The whole point of touching bases is so that there is a conflict between the teams. You are racing who has the ball to the bag and in this dynamic a sport is formed. You have played the sport and excelled at it by hitting the home run. Running around the bases is pointless, there is no longer a dynamic between the teams giving the bases their importance. You can make an exception to the base rule by saying the base rule of touching every base is important and necessary with one exception, we will forgive missed bases on a home-run. In doing that you make a slight technical change that will infuriate traditionalists and people who love strict adherence to the rules but will only improve the game and the idea of the HR. It feels like far more people are upset by a play being undone due to a technicality rather than glad that there was strict adherence to every letter of the rules. I mean the sport has freaking human officials judging in real time what constitutes a strike and ball to the best of their ability yet it is a complete and utter crap shoot based off of biases and eyesight and changes from ump to ump.... the fundamentals of the game has such a subjective opinion judging the validity of plays which could easily be remedied by technology yet you are worried about a runner tagging home on a HR. For a sport with so many rules i'm sure there is a strict definition for what a strike or ball is. Yet why do we still allow officials to call 20 balls a strike a game. That is what should be keeping you up at night about baseball and adherence to rules. So yeah.. the rules don't matter and are more like guidelines.

It pissed me off that they can just intentionally walk people without pitching. There are many instances where pitchers fuck up and throw the ball over the plate and the batter hits it or throwing it wild and letting runners advance. Now we lost those moments. And all these people saying touching the bases is a stupid rule are stupid. It’s literally the point of the game and the easiest thing to do and this guy was showing off and karma bit him in the ass. He got we he deserved for being a show off.
@Lord27Talon
@Lord27Talon 2 года назад
Although I do agree that the removal of having to throw pitches for an intentional walk does take away from the game of possible wild pitches or the ball ‘accidentally’ finding the strike zone, the pitcher still can throw them if they want as it’s their choice to opt for the intentional walk or not (this is actually meant as an option for the pitcher to save their throwing arm and not give a potential home run batter an opportunity to score easily). The difference with a home run is that, as many others stated, it does not score a run. A run is scored by going around the diamond and safely touching all 4 bases in order. All a home run does is give you the full ‘safety’ to touch all 4 bases without the chance of being put out by the defence. Home runs have been scored with the ball still in play, just either defence makes bad plays with the ball, or batter hit it to the correct area of the field that takes the defence a long time to retrieve the ball and the throw into the infield is not received properly to halt the runner(s). Yes, an in-the-park-home-run is more likely to happen against lower tier teams and extremely unlikely to happen to teams closer to the level of the MLB, but the chance is always there that, for some reason, a defensive team makes multiple wrong decisions and either wildly throws the ball around the diamond, or is just unable to make a safe defensive play to halt any runners from scoring.

Once the ball leaves the field of play the play should be over. Rounding the bases is a feel good moment for the batter and his team.

That's what I'm saying. The defense doesn't have a chance to make a play on a home run ball. It shouldn't matter if a player touches the bases or not.

Are the rules in NCAA different. Normally you have to do an appeal throw

It's not like a base where we can clearly see the edge of the plate. If you are taking about millimeters, on a replay, on an HR, where dirt can cover the edge of the plate...silliness

If you can't run around at a slow jog and touch all 4 then it should be taken away from you.

do you have a valid reason why you don't need to touch the bases?? baseball is about being disciplined and patient, touching the bases after hitting a homerun is the EASIEST thing you can do in baseball... and to answer "if you hit a homerun no one should do anything about it" no one can do anything about it... its all up to you and if you decide to showboat during live play

It’s also based on the fundamental premise of scoring in baseball. MLB Rule 5.08 (a) One run shall be scored each time a runner legally advances to and touches first, second, third and home base before three men are put out to end the inning.

I love the inconsistency of reviews and relying on the Ump's call in baseball. Extremely rules based and scrutinized except when it isn't

We don't really have a way to make every rule consistent. Almost every sport has that issue. Tennis is probably the closest to being consistent

The main issue here is: the home plate umpire should have made a new ball live first and then require an appeal play.
