I just bought a Fat PS Vita and a New 3ds XL within the last week and here's my take. I wrote this before seeing your video but this my experience as a complete noob. Each unit I bought was refurbished but in great condition and cost me about $130 off ebay w/shipping. The Vita came with a USB cable for charging and I had to spend about $10 on a 3DS charger (not included). For the Vita I needed to buy a Micro-SD to GameCard adapter for about $10 so both consoles cost about $140 with accessories. Both consoles will require a MicroSD card so that's another $20 for a 64GB one if you don't already have it. Cost wise, it's pretty much even (on a side note my Vita came with a free official holding case thing that makes it like a giant PS controller and cost like $90). Note: if you are modding a Fat Vita, you will have to plunk down another $10 on a used 8GB proprietary Vita memory card to install the mod (many people say Vita's slow, proprietary memory cards that cost 4x an equivalent SD card are why it failed). If you have Slim Vita you can use the 1GB of internal memory but you give up the beautiful OLED display in favor of a bland TFT display. Hardware wise, the Vita OLED screen shits all over the 3DS screen. There are some games on the 3DS that take advantage of the 3D and dual screen which are kind of cool when done right. However, if you're modding you'll most likely be running emulators or games that don't use this feature. The 3DS has a much faster processor but I didn't really notice any improvement on the emulators I run. I did however notice a big difference in the playability of emulated games on the Vita OLED screen vs the much lower resolution 3DS. In my opinion, Vita wins hands down. Without the Vita case, the Vita and 3DS both seemed too small for my hands to play comfortably. With the case, the Vita is comfortable in my fairly large hands. My brother says that he's broken the screen on 2 Vitas and they're extremely delicate. I imagine the clamshell design of the 3DS is more durable when you're not using it. As far as hardware goes, I call it a tie. My PS Vita came with firmware 3.6 which is considered to be the best firmware. Installing CFW was not hard at all and took maybe 30 minutes from start to finish for someone knowing nothing about it. Now I could probably do it in 5 minutes. Apparently, later firmwares are more complicated but still not terribly difficult. My 3DS came with firmware 10.6 which allowed me to use Soundhax method. Again, it wasn't terribly difficult and took 45 minutes for someone that doesn't know anything about it. There are more steps involved so it would probably take me 15 minutes to do it again. Again, I don't see a clear winner here so I'll call it a tie. The next topic I will cover is the games. If you have a legit copy of a game and you just want the convenience and performance of having the game installed on an SD card (cough, cough), the Vita has an app, service, something (I'm not sure) called NoPayStation that has a library of about 8500 games for the PSP, Vita, and PS1 that you can easily copy to your SD card and play with no fuss. The 3DS also has the ability to get games that you own (cough cough) and install. However it's more difficult to find them and you will need to use resources like torrent, usenet, etc... That said it's not that difficult. Installing is another story. If you get a DS/3DS game you own (of course) you have to boot into godmode9 to convert to a CIA, then install the CIA with FBI. This can take from 5 minutes to over an hour depending on the size of the game. The winner here is PS Vita for most games hands down. 3DS for Nintendo specific games (Zelda, Mario, several Dragon Quest, etc...) Lastly, I'll go over the Homebrew scene. Both consoles have a very healthy and active Homebrew scene. However, I feel that the gimickyness and low resolution of the 3DS screen makes for a poor Homebrew platform. The vastly superior resolution and picture quality of the Vita OLED screen make emulators look great. Combine that with the fact the Vita (with a controller case) is a whole lot less awkward to hold for larger hands and it beats the 3DS hands down. The Vita is a superior handheld platform for Homebrew in my opinion. To sum everything up, my main goal of using these handhelds is to clear out the backlog of games I have using cheats since I don't think running back and forth between two squares in Dragon Quest for hours and spamming the A button is a useful use of time. That said, the Vita is my go-to for anything that is not proprietary to Nintendo. However I still love my 3DS to clear out the backlog Nintendo propietary games. Another plus for the Vita is you can Remote Play the PS4 on it if you don't live in an apartment complex and the 2.4GHz spectrum isn't completely saturated.
I agree on this for the most part, but the part about getting games is I feel easier than you said for 3ds. You can literally Google "(game name) cia" and 9 times out of 10 you will find a download in the first 3 results.
I am in the same place as you and now with my modded ps3 I can play ps2 games on the vita through the remote play anywhere as long as the ps3 is on and I have a good internet connection to the vita
Ian East my models are slim, my friend own fat psvita and damn the graphics are significantly better than slim version in the exchange for its battery life. Slim vita run much longer than fat vita
New Super Ultimate Injector 3DS can inject GBA, SNES, NES and GB/GBC into the virtual console only with New 3DS/2DS. GBA games run flawlessly because it also has built in GBA hardware inside but all Nintendo used it for was the Ambassador program. The other consoles mostly run better in VC with a handful that still need a separate emulator i believe.
The release of Daedalus 64 and its wide compatibility, running games like Banjo Kazooie at full speed on the Vita really just puts it over the top. There's also Final Burn that lets me play Street Fighter III Third Strike at a consistent 30fps. Not bad for such an old handheld.
Actually you can run mods of games and translation patches on 3ds without downloading prepatched backups with Luma3ds layeredFS patches, onionFS and similar methods. You just need to have the modified files in their designated paths in your /luma/titles folder on your SD card and they will be patched in on the fly. Another thing you overlooked in the video was virtual console injections, which run retro games better than retroarch in almost all cases
you forgot to mention on a hacked 3ds you can create your own virtual console games and launch them from the home menu and has a better better cheat system
Iirc the two different ways for installing 3DS Homebrew is a remnant of .3dsx files being the original way of using Homebrew through the Homebrew channel before .cia files that you install to the home screen became the standard
American 3DS has skyrocketed in price but you can buy a Japanese 3DS for half the price, mod it and region change it. I bought a New 3DS LL (XL) and changed it to english and North America region. Best investment I've ever made for a handheld
11:09 There is a good reason for having 2 different ways to play games on 3ds. This is because putting a game on your home screen requires: 1. A .cia rather than a .3dsx and 2. CFW. Homebrew allows you to play .3dsx games with the Homebrew channel and was at one point easier than installing CFW. CFW in a sense is like installing an entirely different firmware that behaves like the normal one, but allows for custom games and cheats, etc. Whereas Homebrew can't do the things that CFW can because it doesn't have the same permissions, hence the lack of accessing custom apps and games from the home menu. Overall there is no reason whatsoever to install Homebrew and not CFW.
Not sure if there is a workaround but I think the one drawback for CFW is you have to pay 1.99 for sudoku in order to install cfw. I did it a long time ago so it might be updated but that’s the only thing that I can think of to not get cfw
@@MrCheckertan As of now, unless you know someone with a hacked 3ds you have to buy a flash cart for the latest few versions. If someone you know has access to a 3ds I'm pretty sure you can use seedminer on any version to get cfw, but I'm not 100% sure about that. So yes you do have to pay, unless you are on an older version or know someone who has a cfw'd 3ds. I got my flashcart for $7 so it's not too much, plus you can use flashcarts for playing ds games.

I sold my VITA to buy a Nintendo 3DS... I want my VITA Back. When it comes to official games, the 3DS wins with sheer numbers with a great catalogue of dedicated 3DS games... Everything else however... The VITA does it far farrr better, with the exception of NDS emulation. In all honesty, you won't realize how great the VITA is until you've modded both systems and as of 2021, You can add GTA San Andreas to the list of VITA Homebrews. Nevertheless, I'm a die-hard fan of the clam-shell design, the 3DS is a better portable if you just need pre-2000 emulation (GBA GBC NES SNES etc). The PS1 and PSP Catalogue is too juicy to pass off since the VITA can also better handle old systems too.
I have both and the native 3ds games and the DS games as well as more accurate/better GBA emulation always bring me back to my 3ds. I prefer my PsVita but there are some 3ds titles that are so freaking good. Like monster hunter and the remastered zelda 64 games.
@@tylerstarkey9141 unless its a newer model with the stronger cpu, you will be limited to snes,Gba and Genesis stuff tbh and anything weaker than that, the newer models will be able to run dreamcast and n64 games by the middle of next year.
@@noobtuber10 thanks I appreciate it. I've figured out retroarch is a less than pleasant experience lol. Just testing things out and having slowdown in SNES was enough to tell me what I needed to know. For what I have in it thou it's well worth it and the game library isn't too bad either.

@@MilesEdgeworthAceAttorney I'm glad I own it, but the Vita is not worth the premium price now that the handheld gaming market averages $110 for a great system. RG351, RG 353, Retroid Pocket 2, Miyoo Mini v2, take your pick. The few exclusives that exist don't justify. I only recommend buying it if you're really into the collector aspect of owning a Vita. I'm glad I own it, but if I didn't and was looking at the handheld market I def wouldn't go with it
@@SilentNightx snes and gba games run choppy on vita. 3ds can run snes, nes, and gba games great thru virtual consoles injection. The 240p screen make the games look amazing.

Teck James has a couple videos on it. game still run better on the OG vita memory card and use sv2vita for back up. It takes a while to move a game but I only play one game at a time.

My 3DS isn't modded but I still LOVE it. I really loved some particular games on there. My PSVita IS modded and I LOVE it as well. I really needed to mod the PSVita because I'm not THAT into the PSVita games as much. I really loved Gravity Rush and also enjoyed Persona 4 but after that the rest wasn't my cup of tea. However modded it made it a a super portable retro console. PS1 games, NES, SNES, GB/GBC, GBA, Genesis, turbografx 16. So awesome. I 've been playing my Switch most lately but LOVE all my handheld options. Never could get my psvita sd card adapter to work tho. Tried multiple times after following online vids and was forced to move over files ALL over again that I just gave up. Didn't bother.

I have plenty of games on the SONY 16gb card but if I can add games via a slightly bigger memory card, I can also throw in my nice batch of PSP games I have downloaded from my modded psp. as far as i remember, ntr and some homebrew allow non-installation game patching i.e. for translations. and as far as best value is concerned, it's really just down to exclusive preference. barely anyone cares about controller support or streaming, almost all retro emulation is comparable, 3ds will never run 3ds adequately, vita wont ever run n64. it all comes down to wether or not you want the ds/3ds or the psp/ps1/vita library on the go. ultimately, you'll wanna have both anyways ;)
depends really. If you want a gorgeous screen get the og fat PS VITA 1000. if you want longer battery life , a bit lighter of a console and arguably a better "feeling" console get the 2000.
@@The-Endo-SymArmor yes it is underpowered but i was talking about the games of the system. you can emulate psp and psvita games easily on pc but there will be never perfect way to plays 3ds and ds games on pc because of the dual screen but i guess if you dont have a pc and neither a ps3 psvita is a lot superior.
I assume you mean transfer from a mobile device? In that case you can through FTP, but the Vita requires the desktop program QCMA to hack it in the first place.

@@wevonyt7069 N3DS emulate nes,snes,gba,turbografx 16,gb/gbc better than ps vita retroarch thru VC injection. I can't run super mario world or Earthbound rom hacks on ps vita. PS Vita can't run golden sun at full speed right.
@@wevonyt7069 I only used my ps vita for PS1, PSP, and vita games. 3ds and ds library are pretty big. 3ds have the SMT, dragon quest, and ace attorney games.
