DARRIN MURPHY
This is the first video in a series of eighteen shot at the Royal Athletic Park (RAP) Parking Lot encampment in Victoria, BC. There is much debate about homelessness in our community. Please take some time to hear the voices of the people actually experiencing LIFE OUTSIDE. Thank you to Darrin Murphy for sharing your story.
This project was made with the participation of the Canadian Red Cross, the North Park Neighbourhood Association, and the Big Wheel Community Foundation.
Special thanks to Discovery Coffee for fuelling us with coffee and doughnuts on our shoot days.

Homeless since 1994, 17 years already. It is very hard almost impossible for homeless people standing again on their own feet without the aiding on introduce jobs. But the hardest part is people's laziness. In old era China there was a saying, If you have been homeless for 3 years, You don't even want to be a Government officer, LOL. Homeless (being a bum) beside of torture you, it also give you some freedom others do not have

Judgement is something that we must heal. I was homeless at one point in my life. To say that one is lazy, is judgement. Everyone has unique challenges to overcome. We the people help with a hand up, not a hand out. Helping each other rise

He keeps saying we need to be educated about drug users... educated about what exactly? Sounds like he just wants drugs legalized, which I agree should happen. Most people know allll about drug abusers and chose not to have anything to do with them because while they are abusing drugs, they are usually abusing the people around them too. Speaking from experience.

It's difficult for sure... I believe in safer supply and not stigmatizing people who use drugs. In my opinion it's a health care issue, not a criminal issue.

Well for one there are some bad apples out there that are doing very bad things that make the decent homeless people be seen in a different light

I'm very sorry for asked, Beside of this gentleman, What happened on other homeless people? Is it really so hard to find a job in Canada? If the bad economy and jobless was the reason, why does the Canadian government still keep inviting others from oversea to moving in?

he says in the interview that he's relapsed on drugs, he's disabled and he likely has no employable skills. it's definitely complicated.

The reason why we live on the streets and are not afforded a place to live is because of greed and the lack of compassion from the people who say they have lots of compassion I say we downgrade our country to second world status

If I loved my.partner I knew my presence was going to make him homeless, then why would I put him in that position? I would go find a shelter instead.... I was told to never let helping someone be at my expense...cuz if I dont function, nothing around me.functions. I'm.letting NO ONE ruin or compromise what i have clawed my way back from.and have worked towards...many people dont do dope and are.mad, cuz why should.others be allowed to? Like a double.standard? Many don't feel the moral obligation this guy SAYS he does...but many will ask does he walk the talk? Cuz many good talkers and that's it , dont walk it...the rights and responsibilities go both ways

Your not making any sense, step back and think about what you are going to say when replying instead of just armchairing the situation
@Karma-zx8qe

It's not hard to tell when someone's presence in your life is going to help direct you towards the positive or the negative. Cuz you look at the end results. It's not loving to just let someone continue to destroy their life, and then turn around let them destroy yours too. In the name of love? No. In the name of codependency . The only people I'm not making sense to are those who don't want to acknowledge the truth and wanting to hide in their denial. It's obvious. I've suffered the same way. The only difference with me is I pulled my head out of my ass of denial and stopped letting these kind of destructive people in my life to make me lose my place among other things... Bottom line, people who are homeless and dysfunctional will make you like them, they drag others down with them most of the time because of the shit spin their life is in if u let them get too close, and I would know because I've been homeless as well, this is lived experience talking... You need to have boundaries to protect yourself. Sure help people , but have firm boundaries when you do, so your safe space is not compromised... there's nothing wrong with that1

This person is on disability. He did work the first few months of being homeless, but he couldn’t sustain it living outside. He also worked in the temporary encampment where he ended up after being flooded out of Central Park. And housing is never “free” - $375 comes off their disability (PWD) payments. That’s the standard housing rate for people on assistance or PWD in BC.

@@MindFuelFilms stop making excuses the guy is on disability for being a drug addict . I know all these people personally stop making excuses for them . That is the problem is advocates like you making it easy for addicts to use .
