Homeless Man Sleeping Rough in London After Mother Died

To the best of my knowledge, the homeless sector does not track how relationships cause homelessness. Yet, death in the family or divorce, among other relationship failures, does play a significant role in the cause of homelessness.
I met Nathan in Central London. He was begging for money in a Tube Station trying to keep dry from the wet weather. Nathan was looking after his mom. After she passed away from cancer, the landlord evicted Nathan, and he didn't have anywhere to go but to sleep rough outside homeless.
A death in the family is a familiar story on this channel. Often, the person who passes away brings in the income, so after their death, the family member doesn't have a lot of options.
This has been a real fear for me. My mother just passed away a few weeks back. For the last few years, I was her caregiver. The state came close to taking the house a few times for her healthcare, and there are zero jobs in our small town.
No matter what the crisis, we need to be able to provide a safety net for people so they don't end up on the streets. Besides the obvious health and safety issues, homelessness is expensive for taxpayers. We need to prevent homelessness from happening in the first place, and if someone does end up sleeping rough, we need to get them the help they need as quickly as possible.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Glad you want to help. There are thousands of homeless people just like Nathan in every city. We must end homelessness for everyone, not just one person. Plus, it would be irresponsible for us to provide contact info for each person. Violence against homeless people keeps increasing. *Please contact your local service providers and help them end homelessness.* Now more than ever, we need all of you to take tangible actions to help fix the affordable housing crisis, to prevent elections, and to help end homelessness in your communities.

@bbar182
@bbar182 4 года назад
Yes you are right we are going backwards, and homelessness could become a massive issue in the next few years because 4 major problems exist. 1) 40% of new flats are affordable or social housing but that means families are given priority not single men. 2) People that live in council flats rarely move into permanent housing, they pass it on to their kids. 3)The council waiting list is massive and immigration isn't slowing down which means this wont be solved anytime soon. 4) Lack of investment in programmes to get people off the streets for good.

I too would have been homeless, if my Gram and Dad wasn't around. My Mom passed away when I was 14 and luckily my Gram and Dad around. My Mom had a lot of mental issues and I was with her until she die from "scared of poisoning". She was in and out of Mental Hospital and when she die, I was underage and they wanted to send me to "Foster Home". If I was an adult without a job, I too would be just like him. Mental Health is a big "stigmata" in the world. Some people or like me, don't need much to get by. I now in a better place because of my Dad and Gramma. My Gramma is next, so I am studying hard so I can be better prepared when she goes. Although I am all set because my Gramma is giving me her house and sell it or live in it, when she gone. But it's sad that society DOES NOT KNOW or UNDERSTAND that NOT ALL people wants to be homeless. Ask yourself this simple question..... In the right mind, who would want to be homeless and cold in Winter?

In the UK you don't 'just get taken to court and kicked out', it would have taken the Landlord months of serving him notices before going to court and then weeks afterwards before serving the court order. I sympathize with his position, but he is holding back the truth behind how/why he was removed from his accommodation.

I turned 19 last week and I celebrated my birthday in London. That same day I took the train from Liverpool Station to Stansted Airport to fly home. When I sat down on the train I saw a guy I thought I recognized from Invisible People. It was Nathan. He had put up cardboard signs that said he was homeless and needed help. I started talking to him and told him I didn’t have cash but wanted to get his phone number so I could send him money. He didn’t have any contact information he could give me. I told him I really wanted to help but didn’t know how, since I didn’t have cash and couldn’t withdraw money on the train. He thanked me anyway and gave me a Christmas card that said “Happy Christmas from Nathan”. When I read the Christmas card I started crying uncontrollably and cried for the next few hours. I cried because everything went so fast. I cried because he was so kind to me, and I couldn’t help him. I have contacted friends in London asking them to keep an eye out for Nathan. I’m just a stranger to him, but I think of him every day. At the end of the day my concern was worthless. One day I’ll go back to London to look for him. I hope we’ll meet again.

Yes, but it's a big step from impulse shopping and to be homeless. You guys didn't ask for it but here are my general thoughts: You have the right to feel proud about yourself for making it through hard times and made the right choices. But don't be harsh on other by looking down and berate those that are less fortunate. Be grateful for what you've achieved and try to do something nice instead. Because your thoughts and actions will attract different personalities and if you want kindness in your life (spouse, children, friends), show more compassion and try to be less prejudiced :-)

I'm so sorry to hear about what Nathan is going through. I just wanted him to know he is not alone and so many people are going through these losses. And with that loss, if you're an adult child, specifically a single adult child who was having problems to begin with, you might be stuck with bills and payments you weren't prepared for. My friend lost his mom and brother in April. His other brother died on Mother's Day. I've been sort of taken him into my life because, I'm sure like Nathan, he has all these enormous challenges right now: grief, shock, loss, finances, homelessness, his own health, laid off due to COVID, these situations are so serious because none of us are prepared to deal with this alone. But I see so much of this. We aren't taking time to find out how other people are doing in our communities. We have to help each other out within reason any way we can. We're going to need each other. I wanted to say I hope Nathan's situation changes soon but a lot of it starts with letting others know you need some help. It's hard - I KNOW it's hard to do that. Please keep us posted. And for those in the UK (I'm in Toronto, Canada) are there any resources that might be able to help Nathan out?

It’s ridiculously outrageously expensive and difficult in London to get or afford decent rented property. Friends’ grown up kids have rented property in London over the years whilst either studying or first working, and the rents are outrageous. I was shocked when my friend told me what her son on a junior doctor’s salary was paying out along with 3 others to rent a small house and then later on an apartment. So anyone down on their luck doesn’t stand a chance really. As that young man says once you slip off and fall it’s really hard to get back up.

Even this video doesn’t offer any direct help for this guy. Just random interview and get those views; I walk around London and bless these people with cash. direct help is the best. If you care, go see some of these people, speak to them if you wish, but give them some money so that they can get on their feet. @Hidden_Lizard 4 года назад
The suffering of the homeless far outweigh anything BLM can come up with. More homeless people die every year because of being homeless than unarmed black people (which was a total of 9 last year) and while inner cities can be a rough place to live, imagine having to live on the STREETS in an inner city and on top of that not having enough to eat. And there are alot of black homeless people. It's disgusting. But homelessness isn't as sexy a cause as BLM is at the moment for corporations, media companies and political parties.

This channel really touches me on a personal level. I had a friend who became homeless a while back. He had it really rough. Struggled a lot with his mental health & became an alcoholic. Some family tried to take him in but they had addiction issues too & ended up kicking him out. He couldn’t have a job or live with people. He was the kindest man you could ever meet but so very sensitive. The world hurt him very much. It wasn’t his fault he was homeless, years of being abused by others and his own mental illness brought him to that point and it had been that way for too long. He impacted everyone’s life who got to know him. He accepted everyone and truly LOVED everyone. I don’t know what happened to him because at some point I just stopped seeing him. I miss him dearly and wish I could see him now when I could potentially actually help him. We called him Uncle Bry and I think about him all the time. I hope he just moved on & found happiness.

They just aren't though. There is no connection between people in london. Like honestly, how many people in london know their neighbours and talk to them on a regular basis? This is quite normal in many other countries: America, spain, middle east, Africa, australia and other countries. People here literally do not give a fuck at all about other people, even their so called friends which really serve as source of entertainment. I think the development of technology is a major factor to blame as it encourages isolation from human interaction

Babylon Era very true, like anything which is in abundance, it’s taken for granted after a while. You’re a lot more likely to say ‘hi’ and acknowledge neighbours if you live in a small quiet village. I live in a small quiet village in the midlands, my brother lives in London, he lives his life at a million miles an hour, flys around in helicopters for business meetings with celebrity bosses. Whenever he visits us, I get the impression that he looks at us as though we’re living in the Stone Age at snail pace

@@hf2943 I live in a small seaside town not too far from London, and we get a Lot of people either selling there expensive houses to buy bigger better houses that are far cheaper here, or people retiring from London here, and a lot of them say the same thing, that it is far friendlier here and that people that you don't know will say hello on the street etc... I guess people in London are always 100 miles per hour and it is so densely populated and crime ridden that people don't trust or have time for each other. I find English people quite friendly, I guess it is a big city problem, it's probably the same all around the world.

He has to find a job even as a cleaner, Costa or McDonald's to start with. Then he can get back on his feet, trust me I did it in London with almost no English knowledge.

The man is so humble. Not even complaining about the church charging for a meal and a shower and stuff. Can’t imagine how hard this life must be
